Apparently Uncharted 4 is going to be "the most ambitious Uncharted game yet!" In fact, we see this kind of language in the AAA game sphere all the time. "Introducing the most innovative Halo experience yet!" "Totally redefining stealth!"

And then, every single time, the game is just sorta another okay action game.

My question is, do people fall for this stuff? Do they see these buzzwords and actually think to themselves, "wow, I didn't realize that this was going to be EVEN MORE ambitious than Uncharted 1 through 3! How is that even possible!?"

Do they ever have a point where they realize, "hey, the last ten groundbreaking masterpieces I bought ended up being just sorta okay, maybe this one won't redefine my life."

Uncharted 4 is the most innovative Uncharted yet because it actually has good gunplay.

In their defense, the PR guys wouldn't exactly be selling the title if they said "Yeah it's alright. Though it's not all that much different from the previous game. You could still have fun with this one, who knows."

In a time when we're able to see gameplay footage prior to release, nobody should still be falling for those buzzwords. There's nothing wrong in saying a game is ambitious and/or groundbreaking. But those words are so overused that it just sounds less and less believable.

Just more marketing PR.. Of course, "4theplayers" and "the greatest line-up in xbox history" is something that keeps cracking me up.

Almost as bad as the use of Breathtaking*. That's at least how I feel when it comes to words like that. Also, cold-filtered beer...ALL BEER IS COLD-FILTERED!

*for those too young to remember Seinfeld, the backstory here is that the baby is very, very ugly.

I never consider Uncharted 4 to be groundbreaking or ambitious for that matter. I'm not really hype for Uncharted 4 to be honest,, but I am looking forward to picking it up day one just for the gameplay and storytelling to a Thief's End that is Drake and Drake has always been a Thief.

It's called marketing. I don't know why you're so bothered. Do you really expect devs to say "we're making the exact same game for the fourth time, please give us $60 for it"?

Do you not think a game like The Witcher 3 deserves to have those adjectives applied to it?

What really annoys me are stuff like "brand new engine" or "rebuilt from the ground up", or "next-gen ..." (ND claimed that TLOU had next-gen acting lol). I dunno it's not rational to get upset, it's just marketing :)

Most ambitious compared to previous games from the same franchise or same mainstream market may be. Overall, yeah, these are just buzzwords. Mainstream games are even behind than games from many years ago in a lot of cases.

Pretty standard fare when marketing a product. You're not gonna say "Gameplay about as good as the competition, so buy either one!"

It's the same bullshit, picking and choosing words from reviews just like you see with every movie released.

"Fantastic Four is a groundbreaking summer blockbuster"...No, it was total shit to the 9th degree.

They do this crap so you rush out to pay money to see the shitty movie or buy the shitty game.

It was pretty next-gen if you look at how games before TLOU were usually acted. ND actually worked hard on the acting part of TLOU.

With what? Motion capture? Facial mapping?

These things have been done for years. TLOU didn't have "next gen acting," that's really silly, come on.

No, with GOOD motion capture, GOOD facial expressions, EXCELLENT voice acting and GOOD writing to back it all up.

Even if it did these things better than any game before them (which it doesn't) these things aren't new or special.

If your definition is "next gen" is just "the same shit we've had for ages but slightly more polished" that's kind of sad.

I was really hoping that newer generations of games would bring meaningful enhancements to games based on the improved hardware. Smarter AI opponents capable of using more effective and dynamic tactics. Better physics engines capable of more realistically utilizing features like buoyancy, elasticity, fractured descruction, stuff like that. Larger and longer draw distances, more NPCs on screen at a time, imagine all of the possibilities.

But no, instead we're playing games that are functionally indentical to the games we had before but with slightly prettier graphics. Yawnorama.

Witcher 2 was better in all of those aspects, except facial expressions. TLOU used pre- rendered cinematics, but then Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty (from 2010) outclasses it if we compare pre- rendered cutscenes. Hell even real time cutscene had pretty good facial expressions. So, it's not really "next gen".

The Last of Us - Great acting, music, animation, and presentation in general. Run of the mill shooting and stealth. If the multiplayer is still alive then you're in luck: it has a unique system of gather materials and crafting consumables (bombs, bandages, ect.) Not much replay value in the campaign, [depending who you ask, I play it like 8 times on PS4] the story only really "gets" to you the first time through and you'll start to notice how boring the actual gameplay can be. Rent it.

There are truly ambitious games like Star Citizen with elements that nobody has done or even tried before. But of course you have to seperate the wheat from the chaff. Most often it's just shallow marketing language for the same old stuff in new clothes.
