With Xbox One being a disaster that it is, will MS seek to replace it by next year?

I honestly can see Microsoft already planning Xbox One's replacement. The console is an unmitigated disaster when compared to PS4's success and the fact that they rode on the coattails of the previous generation's success but failed to deliver. With PS4.5 coming out later this year and Nintendo NX next year, I don't see Microsoft sitting on their hands with Xbox One that could (and will) fall further behind in sales and technology.

Do you believe Microsoft will deliver a Xbox One successor by next year that is fully backward compatible and using a two-tier games system that allows new Xbox console games to be also playable on Xbox One?

You're right, this is how consoles, which can take hundreds of millions of dollars and years of R&D, get made.

In the past, maybe but nowadays they are just miniaturized PCs where anybody who could build a PC, can also build a console. Microsoft wouldn't have to upgrade a lot of technology that they already have with Xbox One.

So you're talking about an upgraded Xbox One? Because that I can see happening, and hell, rumors and official statements indicate that an upgraded Xbox One of some form will be unveiled at E3 this year.

Yes, basically an upgraded Xbox One that also could be a stand-in for a 9th generation console. If they do go ahead and release an upgraded console then I don't see the next generation of consoles being released until 2021 or 2022 at the very least. It'll be PS4.5, Xbox One part 2 and NX until the end of this decade.

You haven't been paying attention. Gone are the days of customized chips and hardware. PS4 and Xbone use off the shelf parts; they are basically gaming laptops without a display.

I would guess that more R&D money goes into the controllers.

Losing in its home country after 360 dominated PS3 here last gen makes it a failure.

They should be embarrassed about that, but it has to be over 20million sold. It just has to be.

They should definitely get cracking on a new Xbox, and some new games to go with it.

Maybe put Microsoft Office on it as well. That'd be awesome.

20 million at this point isn't impressive when last gen went on for 8 years. There was huge pent up demand for new consoles like never before. M$ can't even sell Xbone without constant price cuts and throwing in the kitchen sink for free with it either. They dropped the price to $299 for all of April, had a major release in Quantum Break and the Xbone actually FELL OUT of the Amazon top 100. It has already peaked after just over 2 years on the market.

Thing is, X1 is a mess when "compared" to the PS4 sales, but compare it to the Xbox 360 and it's actually a success. I hardly think MS is gauging their success on PS4 sales. Therefore it's a success to them, and they will continue to support it.

Personally, I would love for Sony and MS to cancel this generation, and this fall release super powered consoles even if they cost $600 this year. Just kick start the games up a notch instead of lagging behind in PC hardware so badly. These consoles are like mid points between high end gaming PCs and low end Android TV boxes.

I wouldn't call it a disaster, apart from a dozen games or so it's notable games library is rather similar to PS4's.

It is only a failure to it's little brother 360, sales however isn't a failure, just en embarrassment at launch was the problem but sales wise, not really a failure.

I believe Microsoft will inevitably retire from video games completely.

Ever since the very first Xbox, Microsoft considered it a failure from their own vision. Then Xbox 360 came around and it deviated even further away from the original Xbox vision.

The Xbox ONE is the ONE they wanted to make. I think they will just stick with this one until it loses all its steam, and maybe just maybe Microsoft will go back to their other assets like computers and software and games to them will be a strictly PC fare and no consoles.

I think the Xbox One might just be their last.

The upgraded xbone will be Ms final console , they can just go multiplat with their exclusives .Can't have a division consistently bleed in a publicly shared business.

With this being the most successful Xbox to date, I don't think MS will be in any hurry to drop the Xbox One. They are printing money.

Xbox one is not a disaster , at least not compared to Wii U ... it just doesn't sell as much as PS4
