Witcher 3 4K/30fps and 1080p dynamic 60fps DF Updated!

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has just received an upgrade patch for Xbox One X enhancing the game to take advantage of the additional power offered by the console. Similar patch for PS4™ Pro has been released a few weeks ago.

The Xbox One X upgrade patch for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt introduces a number of graphical features and tweaks to the game across two visual fidelity options — 4K Mode and Performance Mode.

In 4K Mode the game will run in 4K resolution (or supersampled on a non-4K display) with stable 30fps gameplay, whereas Performance Mode enables dynamic resolution scaling (from 1080p up to 4K) while targeting 60 fps during gameplay. Both modes support HDR.

To switch between these modes you need to access Options > Display.

DF Findings:

-Resolution hits Native 4K in 4K mode but does drop in demanding areas.

-No Checkerboard in 4K mode.

-4K mode is locked at 30fps.

-Performance mode does have drops from 60fps. Most of the this mode is at 60fps except Novagrad.

-Better ambient inclusion, textures, and shadows in both modes over the Pro.

-Dynamic Performance Mode doesn't drop below 1080p.

-Biggest advantage over Pro vs. One X is framerate in both versions.

-HDR is in both modes (No date for future patch for Pro).

Hmm...I finally got around to buying TW3 just two days ago. I have a high end 65" LG OLED 4K and an X1X, so I'll fire it up today.

I just got an update, and it's only 550MBs.

@kuu2: MS giving people options? Lol... Umm it's the dev giving people options. This option is already on the Pro and obviously PC. Kudos to the dev. I might finally finish the game in performance mode on my 1080p tv.

I have been waiting to play the W3 all the way through. Now that this patch is out and I have 19 days off from work it will be the perfect time to do that!

@joshrmeyer: The Pro version is CB not 4K. Also does the ProFauxK have a 60fps option?

Yeah we get it... you have a bazillion dollar PC that can run it at a million FPS, and you love to tell everybody every chance you get. Nobody gives a sh*t.

These consoles are weak as hell. I'm glad I don't have to deal with the console version of W3.

I sometimes choose res over FPS...I played TW3 on the PC maxed out at 4K and hovered around 40fps...I was fine lol ( looked terrific )

@hrt_rulz01: It's not about my PC. It's about quality and certain standards that are not being met by the consoles. I love The Witcher 3, but the game does not get a free pass. I will shit on the console version as needed. hehe :)

@BassMan: PC version lacks HDR. Top tier gaming goes hand-in-hand with HDR.

HDR is nice, no doubt, but an added bonus. Frame rate is essential though.

@xantufrog: It dips into the low 40's when unpatched originally, and locked to 30 when you patch the game. This new patch will just lift the cap, will be the same result, it's a lazy job by the developer. Likely be screen tearing as well.

Next year screen tearing goes away if TV sets start using HDMI 2.1 if they are out in 2018.

Performance mode sounds almost playable.

If it ends up being lime nioh then Its a great option. Nioh at 60fps is so much better. Tw3 at 60fps will be great :)

This is the kind of game I would rather have 4K/30 fps, considering the XOneX is not powerful enough to run it at 4K-60fps. I'm sure the 60ish fps/1080p is great, but this is a story-driven RPG game with lots of dialogue, exploring. Yes there is gameplay-driven combat, but the gameplay is somewhat weak compared to a game like say, Zelda. In a game like this where story, stats, and so on are more part of the adventure, personally 60fps is not essential for me, so I think I will stick with 4K this game should look magnificent with the upgraded res.

Nice. Really hope these image vs performance options continue to become more common on consoles.

Of course I'd just opt for having both graphics and performance on PC with a multiplat like this, but not having to deal with wank framerates on console exclusives going forward would be excellent.

@kuu2: F1 is checkboard on x1 lol faux K right? Pro has built in hardware to use checkerboarding properly, x does not.

So my 5 year old PC can still play this better than an X fps wise.

60fps! Go for the highest framerates. I own Witcher 3 on PS4 & PC, the notice is so day/night. 60fps all the way!

Once CDPR Update the XB1X version to incorporate 4K textures the X Version will look closer to the PC version. Most likely that'll happen in a month or so like UBI did with AC Origins.

Eh, my PC could do the game at 2880x1800 at 60FPS, just with a 1060.

Lower Res at 60FPS >>>> 4K/30DPS

I enjoy both. The 4k in Gears 4 looks great but so does the 60 fps animation.

@FireEmblem_Man: Nice. Enjoy it bro. I played the witcher 3 first on PC in 2015. Then bought it on sale for x1. Haven't played the DLC on Xbox yet. Been waiting for this patch.

@Pedro: ugh, that CPU. Look what happens when he rides into town... 45fps. Looks like that exact spot in the game did with my old Phenom II before I upgraded to the i5. My i5 6500+GTX970 outperform this thing in TW3 performance mode, albeit locked at 1080p Ultraish (the 970 just cannot do more res at Ultra and hope to hold 60)

dissapointing textures on the Xbox one X, where are the high res textures?
