Windows 11 announced

Turns out Windows 10 wasn't the last Windows after all.

Some worthwhile additions:

• Android app store integration
• Direct Storage integration (that thing that supposedly makes PS5 load times not exist)
• Auto-HDR

Good to see PC get both Xbox and Playstation features, and games.

Out sometime later this year.

Will Windows 11 be free to download just like Windows 10?

Yup, totally free for Win 10 users.

I look forward to using it. Not on my production machines though.

Alongside the announcement, Microsoft also said Halo: Infinite would be Windows 11 exclusive.

They should call if macOS 11

Been looking forward to the Auto-HDR feature for a while now. Even tested it out and really liked the results.

Sucks that I have to switch though because an OS at first might not be the most stable, so completely understand you not switching for all your machines ;)

It looks like windows. I'm mostly excited about Direct Storage.

Looking at the requirements, looks like my gaming PC is ready to go.

My laptop will have to stay Win10, though. Damn thing just won't break and let me buy a new one. Kinda tempted to stick Linux on it instead, but I don't know how set up an offline personal wiki on Linux.

Cool. After disabling a bunch of bs features on W10, its been pretty good.

No surprise at all.

Hopefully can revert back to the previous start menu styling.

Really looking forward to DirectStorage and Auto HDR.

Fallout 3 ad New Vegas in HDR seems like it would be a dream.

Yeah there hasn't really been any optimizating to SSD use on Windows in quite a while.

Yup, I think it's coming to Xbox alongside Windows, at least that is how they presented it the last time.

It is already on XBOX .. it is not a PS5 feature

anyhow it does seems it was a core os issue with win 10 and real hdr .... that had to be complete re done.

It's basically the Amazon appstore (for android) but not the Google Play Store which has all the android apps.

@firedrakes: Shame to hear it couldn't be done on Windows 10. I actually tested Auto HDR on Win 10 and walked away impressed. There is also a mod that does it called Special K.

Of course real HDR is a thousand times better, but what do you mean with 'massive cost'? For games? Or do you mean movies that have to be shot with new cameras and such?

yeah win 10 was broken hdr. it work when it wanted to.

on cost.

you need costly monitor to edit/work on content that hdr. prices range from 1 k low end screen to high end ones that are 5 k or more. then you need to make sure it correctly calibrated which it self normal cost over 1k. (idk if its per screen or not)

then same goes for the tv.

all that before the console itself.

Oh yeah, an HDR screen is definitely more expensive than an SDR one. Which HDR screen do you use?

One thing I'm worried about is that I'll be hooking up both an SDR monitor and an HDR TV at the same time.

But for sure Windows 11 should do HDR better than Windows 10, not worse.

Maybe you didn't understand my post. I have an HDR capable TV and regularly play content in HDR when available (except assassin's creed games since it's always broken)

My excitement comes from most older games that would really benefit from HDR now having the ability to be played in HDR......even if it is tone mapped. New began in particular with its extensive use of neon lights and signs. I just think it's cool.

I'm confused as to why you are up in arms about it. Why does my enjoyment bother you? If you think it looks bad.....ok? Won't make me enjoy it any less
