Poll: Will you be upgrading your PC next gen or will next gen consoles be good enough? (80 votes)

I might upgrade depending on console specs. 13%
I think console specs will be good enough for me. 20%
I will always upgrade my PC because I'm l33t. 50%
Who cares about graphics? It's about the game!! 18%

This was my first gen where I had a pretty powerful GPU - the GTX 980 TI! It still rocks even today's games, 4 years later. But as we transition to the next gen, I wonder if I will truly need to upgrade. Maybe the next consoles will be good enough for me. What do you think, SW? Will you be upgrading your PC next gen or will next gen consoles be good enough?

When PS4 and XBO came out, I looked at the specs and surpassed them for the launch price of those consoles. Since I have a solid case, a great PSU, and a good cooling setup, all I would need to "upgrade" at this point with my second gen Ryzen 5 still only at 15-20% utilization while gaming, I would only need a GPU to surpass the next gen consoles. That's it. A $350 Radeon 5700 puts me past the PS5, and pretty close to the XBO at less than what either console will cost.

So, why would I deal with the limitations of a console and spend more for something that does less? And most indie games do not come out on console anyway and that is pretty much all I play now.

PC will always be my go-to going forward. New build this year, if the 3XXX series stands up, and my current PC will hopefully be utilized as a HTPC in the bedroom.

Just upgraded my PC so I am set for another "generation", or at least another four years or more.

Honestly I probably did not even really need to upgrade in the first place, my Geforce 980 was still running games at a mix of Ultra and High settings at 1080p just fine. I just wanted more hahahaha.

And yeah, no console for me; I experimented and got a PS4 about a year ago; I figured if it was half as fun as PC, I'd be happy with it. It was not, and I am not.

I won't be making that mistake again.

I haven’t been interested in PC gaming for quite a long time and am just a console gamer these days so I’ll just be sticking with consoles again for this upcoming next gen.

I don't understand the question/options, TBH. I upgrade my PC when it needs it - console gens are borderline meaningless from that perspective.

So a few of the options, such as the next gen console hardware being satisfactory or not, are simultaneously valid and irrelevant to when I upgrade my PC components

I will do another build after the next market refresh, most likely. Kinda interested in doing a mini ITX system, but mid-ATX is the sweet spot for feature-rich devices, IMO, at least currently. Cooling is always the toughest thing to accommodate and it’s easy to overspend.

After seeing the xbox series x, I really want to build an mATX or ITX build. Maybe when Nvidia releases the next line of GPUs

That's pretty much what I do. PC has more a phase in, phase out system then generations.

I am curious to see what GPUs will actually be on the market at the time these consoles actually launch. I would imagine the GPUs available for a PC upgrade will provide even better performance for less cost, if they do not already. And I hear a lot of talk about the graphics these consoles are supposed to have, but not much on CPU or RAM capabilities. I do not think that matters though as most PCs have more than enough RAM and CPU to last PC gaming for the life of the next gen consoles already.

My option wasn’t available:

My PC is already a beast so I don’t need to upgrade it for about 5 years.

Damn the hermits have flooded this thread, constantly upgrading, that must suck lol.

My choices are next gen console specs are good enough for me, even though I don't know nor care what they are, and its about the games.

When a new GPU gets announced and hermits be like...

I never buy consoles at launch. More prone to hardware failure and lack of worthwhile games.

Buying a console after 2-3 years always worked best for me.

If your chip hasn’t got 8k on it,you need to upgrade to one that has like the new Xbox.

But like the 4k on the ps pro box it will do a handful(if that) at said resolution

A console as my primary platform? LOL, not going to happen... EVER!

I wouldn't even buy consoles at all if they didn't have good exclusives. Redundant shit hardware.

I might upgrade my rig, but it'd probably be something like a gold fully modular PSU, ATX motherboard, 1 TB SSD OS drive, 2 TB SSD for gaming, and maybe a Vega 56 and Ryzen 5 2600. Might go a bit farther for 4K, but I'm still on the fence.

As far as consoles go, I'd rather buy backups of retro consoles than buy the PS5 / Xbox X series. I might buy a home console only verson of the switch (Just for kicks as I have a switch lite) but as far as new consoles, I'm out. Namely due to Microtransactions.

Consoles have no connection with that.

There are games I only play on pc ( mmo/flightsim/fps ) all the rest on consoles so...

If you game on a non-laptop PC regularly, why wouldn't you upgrade it? I'm definitely looking at getting a 3000 card when those roll out.

i'll probably upgrade my pc at some point this year. My i7 4770k cpu is feeling a bit outdated in some games, this may get worse come 2021 when more games are made for 8 core cpus like the consoles will have.

My 1080gtx will also need an upgrade by the end of the year...

Nvidia rumors point to their newer 3xxxx cards will not cost more, and will be slightly cheaper than the 2xxx cards were at their launch. This may be a decent year to upgrade my gpu if this is true.

That's ok I will criticise the hermits, I mean hundreds and sometimes thousands spent on their PC's, then they bitch about the price of games (even pirate them) and wait to get them cheap on shit like Gamepass or Humble Bundle (or whatever its called) they support hardware companies more than they do game developers.

So Xbox gamers who use Game Pass are all cheap gaming pirates now according to you.

Upgrade my PC (though i do plan to get a PS5...though probably not at launch). i dont think i will upgrade it this year though.

I think it will need an overhaul by late 2021. new CPU, Mobo, ram and GPU.

PSU, case and other bits n bobs have plenty of life in them though.

I'll likely upgrade my GPU when the new cards from Nvidia come out unless they keep jacking up the prices in which case I might consider going AMD.

i'll probably end up getting a PS5 as well as long as there are interesting exclusives, unless Sony decides to be cool and release their first party stuff on PC as well (seems unlikely)

Always upgrade. I'll most likely get the next Nvidia video card when that hits and possibly sell my 2080 Ti.

I'll definitely be upgrading before I bother buying a console, although, I may pick up a PS5 at some point as well.

Primarily a PC gamer; so I'll definitely be upgrading some day. How soon, depends on budget & next gen. My 1080TI is still serving me well; and my GTX 770 before it, served me well for years. I definitely don't "need" to upgrade, but I'm waiting to see what kind of performance Nvidia's GTX 3XXX series cards will offer.

My gaming PC is 5 years old now. I bought it just for experiencing it at the time. So with that said, I’m a console gamer. I just find it more comfortable. Graphics have never been something I’ve cared about too much either as I get used to anything over time. Lol.

My RTX 2070/Ryzen 7: 2700X is already a beast compare whatever PS5/Xbox Series X has, I'm beyond the realm of possibilities. But anyhow, I upgrade whenever I'm ready to upgrade. My GPU is fine for the next 3 years and I do not upgrade every year anyways. Upgrading your PC is a personal choice to the player, not the gaming industry itself who actually tells you when it's time to upgrade your console.

Voted: I will always upgrade my PC because I'm l33t.

The 5700XT is 12% slower than a 1080 Ti... So a PS5 will be slower and a XSX might be faster or on par.

I have no excitement in buying a late 2020 console that just about competes with 2017's flagship GPU.

The 1080 Ti wasn't good enough for 4K/60 in 2017 with every game out then. Good luck with that performance and slower in 2021 with ray tracing.

Will I upgrade my PC?... Of course, unlike console gamer's I am not under the delusion that 30FPS is good enough especially in 2020.

They're cheap yes, but how you got that they're thieves from it is anybody's guess as you still have to pay for Gamepass whereas being a pirate means you steal it, not sure why that has to be explained to you, maybe its because you're a pirate.

I have recently upgraded from GTX 970 to Vega 56, so I won't upgrade for a while. Upgrades just for the sake of it are long gone for me.

And I'll probably get PS5 in the next two years.

@SolidGame_basic:

RTX 3080 Ti and Ryzen Zen 3 with 12 core or higher. I'm not buying another PCI-E 3.0 motherboard and GPU combo.

GTX 1080 Ti is aging and has instances being beaten by RX 5700 XT (with ACE and RPM) and RTX 2070 (with ACE, VSR and RPM).

https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-radeon-rx-5700-xt/27.html

At 1080p, 5700 XT's 448GB/s memory bandwdith is not a large issue.

NVIDIA Turing GPUs murdered Pascal GPUs. Turing has hardware ACE (Async compute) , VSR (Variable Rate Shading) and RPM (Rapid Pack Math).

Turing and NAVI supports wave32 compute length format. GCN doesn't support wave32, hence inefficient GCN wave64 populated usage (harder to optimize in drivers, less effective TFLOPS usage on GCN).

Turing, Vega II and NAVI supports quad INT8 and double rate FP16/INT16 RPM.

RX Vega 56/64 doesn't have quad rate INT8 RPM.

RDNA 2 has VSR (Variable Rate Shading) and hardware ray-tracing.

At 4K, RX-5700 XT still beats the aging GTX 1080 Ti.

Aging GTX 1080 Ti does not meet "next gen" console hardware RDNA 2 feature set!

PC GPU must have the following features

  • Hardware ACE (Async compute) ,
  • VSR (Variable Rate Shading)
  • RPM (Rapid Pack Math).
  • Hardware Raytracing
  • Wave32 compute format

For Wolfenstein 2 PC build, both AMD and NVIDIA camps used PC's vendor specfic API extensions with Vulkan. This example shows PC can be programmed nearly like a game console.

Turing RTX 2070 GPU + Zen 2 8 cores are my minimum for any new PC build.
