It has all of the benefits of PC gaming, 1080p(and higher), 60+fps, maxed out graphics, upgradeable, complete backwards compatability and cheap games but it doesn't have the downsides of PC gaming, piracy.

The developers have shyed away from PC development in the current gen due to piracy. With the Steam box piracy is not a concern.

The only concern the steambox can have is limited installed base due to high price. But that is also eliminated because anyone with a gaming PC can run the steam games and that makes a HUGE installed base from day one.

Also if you're buying a steambox instead of PS4/X1, you will have a huge catalogue of games available at launch vs almost nothing for PS4/X1. And the steambox will have better grpahics and upgradeable hardware.

Could this be the savior of PC gaming?

PC gaming doesn't need to be saved.DragonfireXZ95

You must be new to this. I remember the days when PC developers made games that took full advantage of the best PC hardware on offer. A lot of the times, even the high end PCs couldn't max a game when it was released.

Now everything is made for the 360/PS3 and ported over to PC. Soon it'll be PS4/X1 ports for the PC.

Yea, you're right these must be the glory days of PC gaming we're living!

Was about to say the same. Especially if you compare it to the situation few years back. Digital distribution and crowd funding (among other things) have really changed the PC gaming scene.

actually due to the architecture of the PS4/X1, it makes more sense for them to start on PC and port to consoles

Yeah, I don't think PC is the one that needs saving. There has never been a time in history when PC got as many games as it does now. It's just a shame so many people still choose to dismiss PC gaming for whatever reason.

Hey, there's no discussion about the demise of PC gaming.  We sure are hearing a lot of crap about how we could be in the final hardware cycle for consoles or how handhelds are losing ground to mobile.  Freaking System Wars is in denial about that stuff, but apparently PC gaming needs to be saved from some unknown threat.

The OP has a point if we look at the types of games we're getting on PC. None of them push our hardware to its limits anymore, giving people over 60 FPS in every game. Like it or not, games are made with a console focus and then are improved with graphics effects to look good on PCs. The main problem is that the current consoles cannot run huge environments without serious tricks to make it possible. Therefore, if they were designed for PCs first, the games would have tons of content that just won't work on consoles. We're not actually getting all of the content that we should be. The irony is that the next console generation will fix that (to a point) by simply having better hardware. If Steam Box saves PC gaming, then it will be due to devs seeing that they don't need traditional consoles to put games into everyone's living rooms. We'll just have to see if Steam Box is even a good product.

Except PC gaming doesn't need saving. And there have been plenty of games that push hardware, but at the same time there has been an increasing interest in indie styl games with innovative or unique gameplay.  Just because you play on PC doesn't mean every game needs to try to be graphics king.

as others have said, save it from what?

Never in my 29+ years of existence have I wanted or felt the need for any other platform other than PC.  I've played on my friends' various consoles throughout the years, of course, and had some good times, but PC has always remained strong, while consoles come and go.

It's painful to read sometimes.

You'll have one thread with people arguing that mobile doesn't compete with the console/handheld market, and the next thread down will have those same people complaining that SquareEnix or Sega or whoever's newest game is a mobile game, and calling them out for being an awful company in need of better management.

On top of that I don't think a single console has gotten more than 5 high-rated exclusives this year, and yet people are fighting over these libraries tooth and nail 24/7. Just think about their libraries in comparison to systems like the PS2 or SNES in generation's past. The library of exclusives for consoles today is absolutely PATHETIC in comparison.

Some of the opinions you see on System Wars are just completely backwards.

While I will admit that a good looking game is great, there are better ways to get there than simply using advanced hardware.

You guys are probably too young to remember golden age of PC gaming back in 90's when games were actually developed for PC, not ported to it.

That would at least finally explain why you are raving about console ports all the time just because they have better graphics.

You must be knew to gaming. You see, the way it works, young one, is that many, many pc gamers steal games.

DRM in the past, has been terrrible. Offering nothing. Instead, Steam is a service, making buying a game for many people, worth it for the community, for the features, for the support. At this point, the only people complaining about steam, probably dont buy games in the first place or have a computer from 1999 that still uses 56k and a voodoo 2.

50 million people choose to use it. Deal with it sonny. It's teh future,.

Regardless, PC gaming doesn't need saving. There are still plenty of games developed for and/or released exclusively on PC

Exclusives this gen:

Consoles: 30-40 each

Multiplats (or "ports" as you call them) are nearly all better on PC according to Gamespot.

Dumb movie.

I can't tell you how happy I am that Hitchcock's Vertigo is now collectively considered the greatest movie over Citizen Kane.  Of course, if I had things my way The Searchers would be SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER than number 7.  Sure, 7 out of 250 by Sight and Sound is excellent.  But we're talking greatest of all time level movie-making here.

PC gaming doesn't need saving. Game developers have a lot of market to work with between consoles and PC, and PC sees many of the same multiplatforms as well as its own exclusives. If I worry about anything it's the game development market period. Used games on consoles has hurt the profits of gaming publishers which puts more pressure on studios to develop blockbuster titles. Hopefully the growth of digital distribution helps but then there's consequences for that as well, for instance effects that might have on the brick and mortar retail marketing of gaming devices. But I think PC will be fine, if PC gaming is ever in jeopardy than it'll be for reasons that extend beyond PC gaming.

The Citizen Kane of comments. 9.5, amazing.

NeonNinja

Rosebud

I watched this movie the other day and I agree. Boring as hell, Cool camera angles (for the time) but the movie is boring as hell.

Seven Samurai is the best movie made, fact.
