Poll Will RTS Genre come back ? (34 votes)

Definitely 26%
Maybe 38%
Never , It's dead 12%
It must return 24%

Starcraft , C&C , I miss those good old days , RTS genre is on life-support now -thanks to MOBA- but fortunately I see new life signs, we have Microsoft now along with SEGA and Paradox Interactive , if Relic don't ****-up AOEIV just like DOW3, we can see the Revival our beloved genre ...

of course they should. they are much better than turn based like total wars and some BS MMO.

looking forward to age of empire 4.

You gotta thank SEGA & Creative Assembly , if it wasn't for them the whole strategy genre would be dead gone

Would you like a first person RTS?

With semi-linear level design and a sandbox kinda open world?

Don't forget Gates of Hell

RTS never really went away though. AAA publishers just declared it dead, for some reason. Just like singleplayer games are dead, just like survival horror is dead, just like console gaming and PC gaming is dead... (to be taken over by mobile and tablet gaming. BWAHAHAHAHA)

Millions of people continued to enjoy the likes of C&C, Age of Empires, Starcraft 2, Company of Heroes 2 and Warcraft III.

that is impossible actually. unless its FPS/RTS hybrid in semi sandbox design. would be best thing ever if someone nail it.

@ghosts4ever: And people haven't stopped playing them, which speaks volumes of the quality of those games.

Age of empires online and COH 2 were my favourite ones in the past decade.

And if you haven't, I recommend checking out Ancestors: Legacy.

They aren't gone, and I think games like Ancestors: Legacy are keeping it alive. But I agree its prominence has drastically faded - and that the titles you highlighted are hopefully going to change that a bit

Yep , it never went away but it's not popular anymore, it's a niche genre and ain't profitable as much as it was in late 90's , developers ain't creative enough and people are too stupid for playing games with simple learning curves but AOEIV can change the whole thing , it has a good marketing and a big old-time fan base all that remains is Relic and their plans for the sequel to one greatest strategy series , I mean Larian & Obsidian brought back CRPG , same thing can happen for RTS

that's exactly what I'm talking about , you don't see many classic RTS games these days , games like Wings of Liberty with great and long story-driven campaigns , their absence created a big Void :p

I would love for them to bring a lot more of those games out. Played the mess out of Warcraft 3, Dawn of War 2 and both Company of Heroes games.

Yeah, the RTS genre could use some more titles. Also their cousin genre, real-time tactics.

Would love to see another Earth 21__ titles, a Ground Control title, something akin to Warzone 2100 (where you build your own units), and another World in Conflict game.

*oooh and Dark Reign.

I believe in Relic, I mean after all Company of Heroes 2 is my most played RTS of all time, because of its perfectly balanced multiplayer.

Plus it had a really cool singleplayer with the Ardennes Assault expansion pack.

The only thing I fear in Age of Empires IV is that microsoft may go overboard with microtransactions (a staple of the AAA industry)

This is their chance to blow new life into the RTS genre. And they should handle it with care, their other AOE game still sell like hotcakes on Steam (yes, Age of Empires II, a game from 1998, is still hitting the top sellers on Steam)

When I was a PC gamer more than a decade ago, the games I played were mostly RTS games like Warcraft II, Age of Empires II, Age of Mythology, Rise of Nations, etc. When the genre began to lose its relevance, I began to stop playing PC games.

Plenty of games to chose from. Warcraft III reforged is a great singleplayer experience, and tries to recreate the open endedness of Warcraft III multiplayer.

Age of Empires II received a fresh coat of paint and so will Age of Empires III.

Then there is upcoming games like Gates of Hell, Age of Empires IV and Iron Harvest. I can't wait to play those.

The genre will never be irrelevant because it attracts millions of gamers each day.

That'd be great, but will never happen.

Ubisoft isn't interested in PC exclusives, apart from Anno and Settlers.

There's tons of indie and some big RTS's coming out every year, to be honest just like most PC exclusives the era of big AAA is done for the platform, hence why RTS's also struggle here. However, what's there is still great and now have even more reply value. They have their base, I'm a big strategy fan and buy a lot of games. It's a genre that won't go away.

Rise of Legends supposed to be its sequel , though instead of historical factions you only get 3 fantasy races

RTS tried to make a comeback over the last several years, it didn't seem to stick to make it as popular as it was back in the 90s and early 2000's.

Warhammer seemed pretty successful though over the last few years with their RTS, I'd like something similar in gameplay but with modern units like tanks.

A open non linear game like that is needed for modern RTS, the linear static feeling of old RTS games like Red Alert/C&C and Starcraft/Warcraft is dead game design and needs to be updated to succeed.

But not quite as complicated and tedious as a WW2 game like Steel Division 1 or 2, but a mix of the arcade feeling of original C&C but some modern rpg gameplay features of Warhammer. You go too complicated and that just turns off most people.

Classic RTS games were more story-driven and had amazing level designs , the first time I played Wings of Liberty , I poured 8 hours straight into it and I even didn't notice- hopefully Iron Harvest will give me the vibe that I was looking for- while the new generation of RTS games failed to bring causal players back

Looking forward to CnC Remastered, and i'm sure it will do better than EA is expecting.

And once interest is established, they can pull open their anus, and ruin it all over again.

omg I just realized that there's an AoEII Definitive Edition. I have HD edition and assumed that was it and paid no attention to it afterwards. Good thing my social life is on hiatus right now.
