I think that's tough. 1998 will always stand out as a GOAT to me because of games like Ocarina of Time, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Starcraft, GoldenEye, Xenogears , Sonic Adventure and Pokemon Red/Blue all in one year. These are all games that were landmark titles, which is hard to beat.

As for 2023, I think it's going to be an amazing year. We have Tears of the Kingdom, Fire Emblem Engage, Company of Heroes 3, Spider-Man 2, Forza 8, RE4 Remake, Mega Man Battle Network, Final Fantasy 16, Final Fantasy Remake 2, Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, Starfield, Forspoken, Star Wars Jedi, Diablo IV. And we're not even through the upcoming announcements! There's a rumor about a New Mario game.

So what say you, SW? Will 2023 be the best year in gaming?

Every year is a good gaming year and it all falls down as to what games you are looking forward to when it finally releases. 2022 was good IMO and no doubt 2023 will also be great.

Another yearly thread? LOL

2023 looks strong.

  • Atomic Heart
  • STALKER 2
  • System shock
  • Alan wake 2
  • Space Marine 2
  • Redfall
  • Star wars Jedi survivor
  • Silent Hill 2

if half of those released in 2022 it would be excellent year but nah. delayed delayed.

Change everything, we'll write about it in books and stuff for generations to come.

Though 1998 will be the best forever and ever.

@SolidGame_basic:

Let's break down the games you listed

  • LoZ: Tears of the Kingdom - This will probably end up as the GOTY, unless Kojima-San or Miyazaki-San actually release a game
  • Tekken 8: Tekken 3 is in my top 10 favourite games of all time and I literally own every single Tekken game, but eh,Tekken just isn't as good anymore. Its not the 90s no more, a Tekken does make for best year ever
  • Resident Evil 4 remake: RE4 is top 20 best game of all time and the de facto GOTY of 2005, but its still a remake. but we will count this
  • Starfield: This game will probably flop Bethesda hasn't made a proper GOTY contender in 12 years.
  • Forza 8: Why is this mentioned? Just your annual racer. Might as well list FIFA or COD.
  • Street Fighter 6: terrible franchise, not worth mentioning.
  • Forspoken: This smells like your typical Sony block buster flop maybe a 4/10. Who knows.
  • Final Fantasy 16: Final Fintasy (sans remakes) have not been good since FFX. I have zero faith in this game. Even me the second part of FF7 remake or FF8 remake please.
  • Diablo IV: As someone with 11,200 hours in Diablo II, I am honestly too scared to hype this. It will probably be as bad as Diablo III was

With those games listed, it is insulting you even suggest it will be the best year ever lol.

1998,2001,2004, 2008, 2013, 2020. and 2022... Those are the leaders of the pack.

Honestly anything other than 1998 is just wrong.

@uninspiredcup: 1998 truly was the best. its only rival was 2001, but 1998 clearly has the edge.

dang, what's wrong with Tekken?

Starfield - yea, highly skeptical about it, maybe we will be surprised.

Forza 8 - the preview looked pretty cool, but yea, racing trailers tend to do that.

Street Fighter 6 - now come on, that looks good! really?

Forspoken is a Square Enix game lol. It's coming to PC too.

What don't you like about FF16? It looks badass!

Diablo IV - never got into the franchise, but it looks that bad??

Seems like a good year, but I don’t understand what makes it a standout? I guess that’s something you can only know in hindsight.

But I look forward to Starfield and the new Jedi game 😃!

It’s definitely looking to be a very strong contender that’s for sure. Tons of excellent games.

@SolidGame_basic:

Tekken is still the best fight franchse IMO. I guess I just have grown out of them. Just like platformers were so 80s, fighting games belong in the 90s imo. Plus, Tekken 7 has more than half of its characters hidden behind pay walls, including classic characters like Lei Wulong. Seriously? I get that Noctis and Geralt are special dlc characters, but why the f would Lei or Armour King or Anna Williams cost money??

I just predict Forspoken will flop hard. Feel free to remind me when it relases.

FF16 does look good. But FF13, FF13-2, FF14, FF15 were all either extremely bad or completely meh at best. Will FF16 finally be good? Maybe. I'm too scared to hype it.

Blizzard are desperate to make D4 sound like D2, but honestly it sounds more like D3. Maybe I am too old school, but I don't like all these modern things they put into computer RPGs. I don't know how to simplify into a few paragraphs but I believe D4 will go into D3s path of giving you a shit load of skills for the sake of variety but no actual depth to build.

In Diablo 2, you had 7 classes and you had good builds and shit builds. For Paladins you had Hammers or Smiter, for sorceress you had ice, fire or lightning builds, etc, etc. I literally had 20-25 different characters all with different builds. We used to spend hundreds of hours doing research on forums reading guides how to optimalise our characters and their stats/skills/items.

in Diablo 3, they want you to mix and match instead of specialise... booo. In D2 you had a few OP spells and a lot of shit spells, in D3 they made everything equally balanced so that everything is viable. if everything's good - then nothing is. they will also probably make items A LOT more common than in D2 so that everyone gets good gear. The skill/stat system doesn't look good.

There are a few more points but if you have not played D2 its hard to understand. Best explanation I can give is D3 completely streamlined and casualised the experience to make it more accessible to noobs. More variety so people with short attention spans don't get bored. No focus or depth into the level and character building that D2 had. They vowed to go back to what made D2 great but I think it will be way more D3 than D2.

All of those titles have the possibility of flopping, so it's too soon to say. People hyped Calisto and that flopped. The only game that has a modicum of interest for me is RE4Make. :/

Only thing I'm looking forward to in 2023 is the PSVR2 I pre-ordered. I'd look forward to Zelda more if it were on new hardware. FFXVI looks like it may be good, as long as it's nothing like 15 and more like 14. Forspoken didn't feel like a $60-$70 purchase from what I played. Maybe get it down the road though. No interest in starfield. Hopefully Forza 8 will actually be on gamepass.

For me it'll be FF16, Starfield, Spider-Man 2, RE4 Remake and SF6 for sure. There's a lot of possible stunners coming this year, if they make it.

I see a kind of repeat as 2010, one of the most packed years I can recall. Mostly many of those games avoided releasing holiday 2009 out of fear of underperforming as a result of releasing next to Call of Duty, so they pushed many to the 1st 2010 quarter. Which happened after the 2008 holiday quarter where many great games released but performed far under expectations and COD was to blame then. So that's why in late 2009 many pushed releases back to early 2010 instead. Irony is that in avoiding COD 4th quarter 2009 just ended up competing against jam packed 1st quarter releases.

For whatever reason many of tvis year's games just keep getting pushed back to be finished. Maybe to fine tune or add polish, whatever. Maybe a lot of slowdown due to Covid or devs adjusting to UE5, who knows. But seems a lot of what missed 2022 is just going to stack onto 2023. Plus if this is the year devs start to showcase UE5 then it's going to feel like the year the 9th gen starts to really take off potentially.

2023 really is amazing, but I guess that only applies to you if you own the right platform to play all the best games coming out.

Clearly a lot of people here who don't have a positive outlook for next year don't fall into that category.

Maybe try buying the game platform that has a history of actually delivering the best games, or not lol

Aliens will find ancient hieroglyphs carved into granite and texts inside time capsules buried under half arsed stone henge structures built out of piles and piles of molten mobile phones that speak of a race of beings calling themselves "Humans" and these ancient writings will detail how 2023 was THE year for gaming. Aliens will wonder how such a lazy, mentally ill species managed to achieve this with only primitive tools at their disposal.

TBH its probably going to be just like this year though, maybe slightly better.

No.

It would have to take a serious Nintendo producing many new games of its biggest IPs and many PC exclusive games to be released. And I'm pretty sure that's never going to happen ever again.

Nintendo will very slowly put out one game once in a while that you have to play, while PC will get a few third party games. Gone are the times where must-play after must-play comes out. Valve sucks. Blizzard sucks. Etc.

ok. theres childish nintendo game coming out zelda. corrupt mainstream media will give it 10/10.

the real GOTY Atomic heart will barely get 7/10 because "its noo polish, its buggy," or "game is too confusing its hard (seen IGN previewer lol)" while ignoring its design and such, treating it to be like next Stalker or Metro.

Personally other than quiet years like 2014, 2021 or people somehow only owning xbox, its been a relatively great past decade or so. Hope sony releases new 1 hour State of Play though, I dont like this new silent Sony I used to be hyping for games that is years away.

Here for another great year in gaming!

Year is looking loaded my top 5 I am most looking foward to are has follows.

1. Zelda BTOW sequel to the best game ever game.

2. Spiderman 2 love the first game and big insomanic fan

3. Suicide squad kill the justice league being by rocksteady who did some of my favorite games ever in the arkham games is a big big plus and from the little bit of gameplay we have seen it looks great. Also last time with Kevin being batman.

4. Horizon forbidden west dlc. I considered the horizon games to be the 2 best sony games ever so more horizon is not a bad thing + being the dlc is ps5 only maybe we will see even better graphics than the main game that looked amazing already.

5. Call of the mountain. I have not really got into vr much but look foward to it.

There are a lot of other games I look foward to may be the best year ever for gaming.

It'll be a good year but I think the best years are in the 2000s and 90s decades. There was a speed of innovation back then that simply cannot be brought back due to reduced returns on technology and stagnation of game design principles these days. I don't think we can ever expereince something quite on that level again.

No. The best year was 2015. There won't be a better year unless Bluepoint does a Bloodborne remake, and Sony and From work on Bloodborne 2, and they patch Bloodborne for 60fps, and they bring Bloodborne to PC or make a portable PS that plays Bloodborne natively with no streaming.

Honestly it can easily be one of the best years in the more modern Era. However, not for most of of games I see listed.

I'm most interested in Ark 2, Hogwarts Legacy, Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, Crime Boss, Armored Core 6, Atlas Fallen, Theathrythm, Octopath 2, Killer Klowns, Robocop, Sea of Stars (this game looks like Chrono Trigger and Breath of Fire mixed into one and looks amazing not to mention it has music composers from chrono trigger/cross), Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown, Valheim, and Wayfinder are all games I'm interested in, plus there are plenty more I can't even think of right now. 2023 is finally looking like a decent year.
