It's simple (we kill the Batman)
People don't buy PS3s or PS4s for Halos or CODs. People buy 360s/Xbones for Halos of CoDs.
And I definitely wouldn't want it any other way.
Xbox Live--and I can't beat this poor dead horse enough--was built on Halo, runs on Halo and CoD, and is honestly bought specifically for Halo and CoD.
Unfortunately, Sony will keep trying.
I can bet you right now Destiny won't be as big on the PS4 as it is on Xbox One. Why is this? Because you have a platform that is built around online gaming, raised on online game, with a userbase that's virtually all about online gaming, versus a platform that's constantly after new IPs and single player franchises, and in cosntant pursuit of creating a solid library.
The killer factor is that Xbox platforms are the go to consoles when the default and mass gaming userbase thinks about online games. When you think of gaming online, playing WarHawk or StarHawk or MAG on PSN isn't the first thing that comes to mind (unless you're a cow). Playing CoD/Halo on XBL are the first things that come to mind. XBL has been successful in making itself a standard, default trend for online console gaming. This alone lets it get away with so many things.
1. The Userbase and Mass are already there so, what do they want to play?
2. Hmmm...That's a good question. What have they enjoyed in the past?
3. Well, they seem to like this game, and that game, and this other game....
4. We need to create something current and new, but we also need to cash in on that already established user game
5. So we need something similar to what they like now and what they've liked in the past...
6. But we also need something somewhat fresh to show a sense of progression. We can't lose their interest.
The already established User base from the original Xbox to the 360 to the Xbone will always be a home to most online gamers. I don't see Sony beating this anytime soon. It doesn't mean Sony online games aren't incompetent, don't get me wrong. StarHawk and Warhawk and Killzone are fking amazing; literally can't get old. But MS will always trump the PS3/4 in terms of online console gaming. They just have the user base. Killzone couldn't do it, Resistance couldn't do it, MAG couldn't do it, StarHawk/WarHawk did something but not IT...And these are all great games. The killer factor is that it's no longer about which online service is better. It's come out of that. Xbox Live is now a default go-to thought for online game amongst the mass/main gaming demographic. It's now a trend and an instinct. People aren't asking the Vs. questions anymore. Buying an online game to play because it's what's big on XBL is now just as instinctive as...itself I guess...And this is also why TitanFall will be a huge success.
One last thought is this: If you think I'm wrong, then ask yourself this: Would TitanFall as a PS4 exclusive, be nearly as successful and big as it be as a Xbox One exclusive?
