was wondering, since the graphical power of both consoles seems comparable, as to what's the main differentiator in terms of price between the two consoles.

anyone know the production cost of the 2x Bluray drives of the PS3 compared to the 12x DVD drive of X360?

In the beginning it was probably the cell processor. It was something new that they undertook and i'm sure it cost a lot to get it going, even if it's comparable to the 360's the 360's hardware seems more like parts from companies that make stuff for normal computers. Stuff like Intel, AMD, ATI, Nvidia etc. while PS3 seems to have odd unique hardware (it's been like that with every playstation i believe) so maybe that's why it cost more.

Including Blu Ray is definitely a big price raiser as well, they cost a huge amount for PC's let alone a console. PS3 also has lots of little features here and there that i'm sure added up. The USB ports, the wi-fi, the memory card stuff.

You answered your own question by mentioning blu-ray. I don't know the cost for production but it is a new technology along with the cell. And don't forget built in wifi...

six-axis controller doesn't affect the console itself's production cost, the real price higher is the Cell processor and the blu-ray, the "epicness" is discussable

The huge development fund of Teh Cell. Mostly the blu-ray though.

PS3 is higher quality all the way around... Here are a few things that add to the production cost of PS3 -Touchless buttons -internal power supply -direct feed Blu-ray drive -Internal harddrive -wifi -quiet cooling design -lower defect rate -Bluetooth

The PS3 cost so much to manufacture because of the Cell Processor , RSX and Blu-Ray Drive.

All the above posts have almost nailed it, the size of the PS3 is also a problem.

Isn't one of the SPUs permanently locked too due to yield issues? I thought I read something about that around launch.

Instead of IDLE Speculation by the TC, et al.

What is the difference of making games on both platforms in 2009?

Developers' kits are still more expensive on the PS3 as far as I know, and though people know more about the Cell processor than they did at launch it's still more costly to develop games for the PS3 in terms of programming hours required, both for the processor and for maximizing the use of the allocated memory (doubly so if a 360 version of the game is also in development, as the 360's memory is more flexible).

The Cell has 8 total SPU's. 1 is locked for yield issues and 1 other is locked for OS use. So technically devs only have 1 PPU and 6 SPU's to make games.

Just look for pictures of dismanteled 360s and PS3s and you'll see for yourself why the PS3 costs more to produce.

lol you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. umm yeah my 250 dollar CPU is sooo overpriced, and the fact that i have it overclocked to a 1100 dollar CPU means you are even more wrong. Please actually do us all a favor and do some research before you hit the submit button.

Better hardware

More expensive materials

Built in wifi

Built in blu ray

Built in power supply

Cell broadband processor

Pressure centurized eject and power touches. (Costs more then you would think)

As many others have said, the production cost is much higher due teh Cell CPU and BluRay drive. The initial cost to manufacture the PS3 was about $900 with teh Cell and BluRay accounting for about $600. A 2x BD drive can't cost much more than $50 to make now, so the Cell must be responsible for much of the current cost.

Main cost difference is the blueray drive. Cost was around $300 for Sony when the PS3 first came out. DVD costs MS around $20 to put in.

Cell processor is around $100 more than MS processor. The cost difference in the CPU is due to it having a low demand. Not many devices use a cell processor. It will also stay that way since the Cell is mainly geared for video decoding.

The cost to make a blu-ray player cheapest one is 50 $ (probably less a taiwanese is going to sell it 50 $ this christmas). DVD 12X is 20 $s. The cell and wifi is what push the price up atm.
