Poll Why isn't XBOX GAMEPASS a huge money maker for Microsoft and why aren't you a member??? (23 votes)

There's not enough new and interesting content to make the investment? 61%
I'm waiting for next gen titles to release on the platform... 9%
Microsoft isn't doing enough marketing to promote the service? 9%
Quite a few people still prefer physical over digital media... 43%
I already own most of the games on the service... 22%

Microsoft launched it's Xbox GamePass in the summer of 2017. Since it's launch, GamePass has grown into a gaming service that offers over 100 games and growing but despite being on the market for over 3 years...and despite the service being priced at a mere $15/month, why isn't Xbox GamePass a huge money maker for the software giant?

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/microsoft-kinda-doesnt-care-if-you-buy-an-xbox-ser/1100-6481227/

"Xbox head of marketing Aaron Greenberg indicated that Game Pass isn't a huge money-maker right now, saying it's "not a big profit play."

Waiting for next gen games like haloin avo fab and that cartoon graphics game.

Might get a Series S just for the controller. Sold my Xbox One and its controller many years ago.

If I get the hang of flickstick, I am not likely to get a Series S for the controller since it has no gyro.

Might sub to gamepass for a month whenever their new games come out.

@girlusocrazy: That's a good observation. Most devs are looking to sell as many copies as possible at full price so Gamepass wouldn't be a good idea for a lot of third parties until sales have slowed down. Being that both Nintendo and Sony first party games are still really popular, do you think this service will ever become a huge seller for Microsoft?

just the idea of games as a subscription does not appeal to me at all. i just prefer to buy whatever game i want whenever i want to play it.

it's odd. i subscribe to netflix no bother. i know that if i stop subscribing i wont be able to access the content any more. that doesnt bother me.

but with games it's different. maybe its because it's my main hobby.

i also have no interest in buying into the xbox eco system. i don't like the concept of ecosystems in general (it's vendor lock in basically).

@osan0: I definitely understand. I prefer to just buy my games too. I like having a game collection plus I prefer physical media over downloads. I've been hacked before so I feel better knowing I have a back up I can just pop in instead of having a 1-800 number, waiting a good 10-15mins on a live rep to pick up and then explaining what happened.

Despite that, I still think Gamepass is a great deal for the market it caters to. Years ago, I used to rent games because I couldn't afford to buy every game I wanted as a kid but now that I'm in a good place financially, I don't mind shelling out $60 for a game that's worth it. Anyway, thanks for adding to the discussion.

For now, i only subbed for 2 months when the outer world came out. MS exclusives are simply too mediocre to be even worth spending $5. The only time its worth spending that money is for the third party.

I periodically subscribe. I also think it's very profitable for MS, otherwise, they would have closed it down already.

When the next gen 1st party exclusives start coming then the subscribers will definitely go up at the moment not a lot of quality has been dropping so no need to continue the subscription its all about quality over quantity for me.

I am a member on PC. They're losing money because the price is super cheap. That'll change once they have enough subs and they start increasing the price.

I am a Game Pass Ultimate subscriber. I’ve been subscribed one way or another since the program launched.

Why isn’t Game Pass a big profit play? Last night is a good example. I got on my PC to buy Flight Simulator. I opened the Xbox app for PC and saw the game was included in Game Pass. I put my wallet away and proceeded to download the game.

At full price, Ultimate for a year is $180. That’s 3 games between PC and Xbox. The console only version is $120 a year at full price. That’s 2 games. There are over 100 games on the service spanning dozens of developers. So they’re are many hands in the money pot. The value for consumers is pretty damn good and would be even better with stronger 1st party titles. But from an economic standpoint, I’m spending hundreds of dollars less each year on Xbox titles alone. And I’m not the only enthusiast that spends a good chunk of change on games each year. Microsoft is leaving all that Xbox enthusiast money on the table in order to gain $10 from casuals here and there. I don’t know how that works out for them.

When you put it to the equivalent of it costing 2 full price games a year it sounds a good deal my problem is more of the quality of games going in at the moment. There's nothing at present to push the subscribers up now Halo has been delayed.

While I think that Game Pass is a terrific value for the consumer it’s not something that I’m subscribed to yet myself. I prefer to get my games on physical formats plus I’d rather just pay for a game up front to own and play at my leisure. I won’t lie though my resolve has been weakening as of late and I may end up subscribing to the service sooner rather then later. I’m thinking of subscribing but still purchasing physical copies of games that I feel are “must owns” for me.

I used it on PC to try out sea of thieves when it launched. I think it's good for parents who have gamer kids but it's not for me. I have 300+ games on Steam and I don't even know how many unbeaten games I have from PS1 all the way to PS4, so I already have a bigger catalog of games to play that I actually own. Also, as far as games go, for $180 a year I just prefer to own something for my money. For 2 years of gamepass I could buy another decent monitor for my PC or a boatload of games on the next big Steam sale. That's just me though.

It's a fantastic value.I bought 2 years of gold and took advantage of the $1 upgrade to ultimate for that duration so I'm set.

I rarely ever get games for full price, usually wait til they're under $20 so the full price of $10 / $15 a month isn't quite as much of a bargain for me as people who regularly pay $60- but I'd probably subscribe for a month or two if there was a recently released game that I wanted to play.

I subscribed to Ultimate last night for the 1st time. I normally never subscribe to these types of services but for $1 how could I pass it up. I download Dead before Daylight, Final Fantasy VII for the PC and Gears of War 4 for the X1X. I'll give it a test run before I decide to continue paying or not.

I am a subscriber. It is terrific value as the service cost is the equivalent of two new games which is a no brainer. I then also get a bunch of other games for free, often things I missed or forgot about. It also allows no risk experimentation on a bunch of games that I may never have tried otherwise.

And why would I care if they make money? That is their problem, not mine.

Well seeing as they are legally obligated to either fulfill the terms of their service for whichever payment plan you are on or refund you the difference this really isn't an issue.

Of course no one ever refunds the money in these situations as it is much easier to simply give notice far enough in-advance. Much like 'the servers for multi-player game X will shut down Y months from now'.

Gamepass is on its investment period. Once they reach there goal they will start thinking about how to make a profit. If things don't work out then they will shut down the service.

Been a member since it launched on pc, and loving it! For 5$ a month it’s simply to cheap to bother unsubscribing when there is nothing I want to play on it... in general it’s great value, today I spend my day playing battletoads( decent beat em up) and spiritfarer which is an awesome game!

Here are a list of things that I don't contemplate while playing a game on Gamepass

  • Is Gamepass making MS money?
  • Is Gamepass a huge money maker?

How can they shut it down people already invested in it for 3 year they bought xbox ultimate for 1 dollar for 3 years.

They can't shut it down now they got people who bought into for a long chunk of time.

MS most likely holds the rights to shut it down at any time, I would read the terms of service.....

That's like asking if you can sue Netflix after 3 years of service if they shut down. You're paying to use the service NOW. Unless you paid 3 years in advance you have no reason to sue and if did I'm sure they'd refund a prorated amount.

Damn you're such a fakeboy.

Uh Netflix you can't pay for months in advance like you can with gamepass so who would even care if they shut down you didn't pay for future months.

re-read what I said moron. I said if you paid for 3 years of gamepass and microsoft shut down gamepass would you get a refund for it. You still have 3 years on your sub. Whereas Netflix you pay month to month.

It doesn't matter the point is you're paying for the service to use it today. If you paid in advance then they'd have to refund what wasn't use if THEY shut down. It's a stupid question you asked because you specifically asked if you could sue. You're a dumbass fakeboy tool.

Yes! Physical copies rule!!!
