Seriously, all I see are remasters. Are devs just lazy? Whats with all the remasters, not enough true next gen titles.

Quite simply..... Last generation latest so long that the games released in the last couple of years were held back by the old hardware and wasn't really the games the developers wanted them to be or release.

So they release them again on the newer machines and try to make them resemble the game they originally planned for.

It's not out of laziness. It's out of we have no money to produce the new standard for games and the time it takes to make new games has drastically increased to the point where it's hard to turn a profit, so we'll try to pool some money together by releasing games that we already made and create excited and new audiences for our next project.

Last gen was a blistering 8/9 years long depending on when you cut it off. Some of these old and tired games probably ran and looked as they did because they were shackled to the long lasting hardware that last gen provided. Because last gen was so long the games that came out during it will probably be remembered more fondly because they were just there....as the gen stretched longer than it should have done.

Couple this with the abolishment of exotic console architecture and you've got some easy money and easy nostalgia just sitting there waiting to take advantage of.

This gen does seem a bit pointless at the moment. Like one decent exclusive on each console and then the rest are remasters and cross gen multiplats. Hopefully that will change over the next year and devs dump last gen and start focusing on using the full capabilities of the new consoles.

If they don't stop supporting last gen and this gen is only 5 years long then it is going to be a terrible generation. I really hope that doesn't happen otherwise this gen will be just last gen with slightly higher graphical settings. I want to see level design, AI and other improvements that cannot be done on the 360/PS3.

@APiranhaAteMyVa:

You can have all that in any gen...... the new consoles are just more powerful versions of the previous ones so naturally the only so diiference is graphics..... they can drop last gen but theres no reason to believe thats going to improve studios ability to create better level design and gameplay....... I mean just look at Ryse and The Order..... it sure as hell didn't work out well for them.

Last gen was so long that the developers are wanting a do over.

Also gullible customers who'll buy the same game twice because 1080p & 30fps is so much better than 720p & 30fps. Unless of course we're talking about PC's doing 1440p & 144fps then it doesn't matter.

Because the WiiU started the generation flat as all **** and publishers started getting spooked about giving multimillion dollar next-gen games a green light from their budgeting departments.

As a result of the "iPad will replace gaming consoles" blast everyone was on in 2012, not enough games have had a mature development cycle. Now that the PS4 is proving people wrong, they are scrambling to get anything and everything out the door as quickly as possible and that means remasters.

Expect this E3 to be the real start to Generation 8. 2013 and 2014 were, sadly, just the appetizer and salad before the real meal.

Games this generation take a lot of time and resources to make. That's really all there is too it. So publishers plug the gap with remasters. I guess its better than playing nothing at all.

Publishers want as much money as possible by doing as little as possible.

Remasters and micro-transactions, Microtransactions, are a concept, they are literally selling, nothing.

Bloodborne literally just launched, so not all games are remasters.

New IPs take a long time to do properly, especially with our high expectations for quality.

Devs take a small team and upscale old games to resell at a higher margin to keep revenue flowing while the new IPs and larger games are being made. You can't operating on rolling out 1 game ever 3-4 years when your game dev cost and marketing are pushing 100 million for each game. It's too risky to try to budget for 2-3 years of no real revenue and 1 boom year. It's way less riskier for them to diversify and release more often.

This is also why publishers exist. They can lower the financial risk of game development. Publishers diversify their lineups and constantly release products. Developers work with them because the financial security is far greater.

it's gonna be funny when the PS5 comes out, still using x86 architecture yet no BC with PS4 games. I wonder what kind of excuses they'll pull out of their asses to justify it.

A few reasons I think:

- Remasters are cheap, and require a relative small team.

- Alot of people did not pick up as many of the games of the latter part of the last gen, so they tend to sell a fair bit.

- New IP's take time to create, and updating engines to Work proper takes a time aswell.

- It is a good cheap way to learn how the hardware and quirks of each console, by porting over an older game, gives some insight to how things can Work, and do not Work like it used to, basicly remasters are an effective way to test ways to utilize engines, and compile code. (Atleast it is a hunch I have).

Remakes aren't so bad, they're less an issue for me if the games are good and worth getting.

I've not minded a few that I actually cared for, Metro 2033 & Last Light remakes were good, as a fan of Metro 2033 on the Xbox 360 I thought that they smoothed over a lot of its issues with the poor hit detection, and the graphics upgrades and combat mechanics upgrades were nice. Plus the game came with Last Light DLC, which I didn't bother paying and downloading when I played Last Light on PS3, some of the missions in those were pretty cool. Plus I got both games for $20, that's an excellent value.

Tomb Raider Definitive Edition wasn't really any kind of substantial remaster, unless maybe you got it on PS4 with its 60fps, nonetheless it was an awesome game worth playing, and also a game I only paid $20 for.

There's others out there I'd be willing to play down the road, I'd like to try Saints Row IV since I never played it on the last gen consoles. But, it is a remake, so it's going to need a price cut or few before I get around to playing it.

Zombie Army Trilogy, which is just the DLC from Sniper Elite into one package plus a new third game, that too is kind of in the remaster territory. I want to get that once they patch the Xbox One version to reduce the screen tearing, otherwise I'll just get the PS4 version when I eventual get one.

Halo MCC, the idea isn't bad to have all the Halo games but unfortunately they had lots of issues with the game. But, I don't mind the sentiment, I wasn't ever big on Halo MP anyways. So for the SP/co-op campaigns, the game is what I'd want out of it. It's coming with ODST expansion as well as Reach (I imagine).

I never did play TLOU on PS3 and glad it's on PS4 as I'll probably wait until I get one to play it.

I'm not even done wanting remasters, I'd gladly pick up a Dead Space or Mass Effect or Gears of War trilogies if we should ever get them one day.

Everyone is losing their collective shit over word of a Arkham Asylum/City collection, and it's only a rumor, but I'd gladly like one. Arkham Knight is coming out in June still, this year, so it's not like such a collection would come at the expense of the latest game, if it was indeed coming out.

I find it hypocritical nobody blew up over the FF Type-0 port, especially at $60, and that people only really wanted it for the FFXV demo. I myself am upset by this. Not because it's just another remake in a sea of remakes (I'd actually like to play it at some point), but because they're selling it for more than its worth. Without the FFXV demo I don't see how this can be worth more than $40 at release. It's a very late port of a PSP game without any substantial upgrades, it should be priced as such.

Because devs are afraid to take risks.

Because dev budgets have skyrocketed insanely high. The higher the budgets go, the fewer games we will have.

Maybe the devs feel that last gen consoles just couldn't do their games justice at the end of last gen.

I mean 720p, ~30 fps and shit AA was really quite sub par.

Oh and also it's easy cash. Just make people pay again for a resolution and framerate bump.
