I notice a lot of guys here say that 4k is kinda like a gimmick and marketing. that 1080p is really good lol. Do most of you guys really feel like that? I wonder if the guys saying that if they ever play on a oled 4k hdr display if they would still think like that? Picture quality is great. Im not saying sacrificing fps over resolution. Im just saying it sounds like guys think its useless even if you can get 60 fps 4k you still think that?

I'm looking forward to getting into 4K when GPU's can reliably run games at that resolution at a high frame rate (60+)

for now, 1440p is the sweet spot and my TV is still 1080

Never saw anyone wrote 4K is a gimmick? Then again, I'm not that active here.

I mean, on PC you do get actual 4K in games. Not sure if some games on consoles get upscaled from 1080p. I never cared to check. Games look good. That's all what I care about.

I'm not one of those people, but I much prefer performance over resolution. On PC with more graphically intensive games, I make use of 1440p/120 on my TV.

I don't think its a gimmick or meaningless, but I think if those resources can be used for improved modelling, textures or performance then its shouldn't be number 1 on the list. It feels like 4k was often the big boast about the One X.

If they can create incredible looking games at 4k and 60fps then I'm 100% behind 4k being the norm.

I don't think it's either a gimmick or meaningless, but it's the type of incremental upgrade that is in no way necessary for games being great. If that's what floats your boat, fill your boots, but I was playing games on my x386 PC and SNES which were (and still are) a blast to play, so I won't partake in any fiction that I need to in any way rush to adopt a 4k OLED monitor/TV in order to enjoy my hobby of gaming. Treating hardware updates like this as anywhere close to important to enjoying games is missing the point, in my eyes.

That being said, I'm glad there are rubes out there operating on these types of assumptions, because you people basically pay the development fees for R&D and fabrication expansion to get the prices down on these things. That way, when the 720p flatscreen from around 2005 that I have in my downstairs office finally dies, I'll be able to get a fancier new one for less.

4K is more meaningful for something like VR but for flatscreen gaming not nearly as much. Now ray tracing is the bigger jump that everyone can notice I don't care about Minecraft but ray tracing implemented correctly is a hugeee difference.

I bought a 4k TV during boxing week in anticipation of the next gen consoles, just wanted to make sure my tv system was 'future proofed'. If it is just a gimmick then they got me with it lol.

@ratchetclank92: its not a gimmick lol. once you get used to 4k its kinda hard going back to 1080p. I made the post because i noticed a lot of guys saying 4k is not worth it and its just better sticking with 1080p they are really missing out on a great 4k hdr display.

4K is 4K.

What is questionable is its necessity in gaming.

For productivity it is great for viewing text and small icons. For shows it's a no-brainer since you do not interact with it and do not worry about performance.

Smoke 'em if you got 'em, but it's the first thing to go if I start losing frames.

Wonder if it's weird to say I dont think 4K is a gimmick but that 8K is.

We barely have anything that takes advantage of 4K (especially movie/show streaming) and yet 8K is already being pushed as the next big thing by the TV industry.

In the sense that it's being pushed a decade too early, i'd agree. I can see 8K monitors gaining traction in certain industries, but as a TV for regular users, we're nowhere near. In Canada, I think we only have a few cable channels that even use 4K. Though that content exists on streaming services, if you have the bandwidth.

Exactly. Lighting and other in-game assets make a much bigger difference than resolution. 1440p is where I'm sticking and then turning up all the lighting bells and whistles on top of that. Also, I'd rather stay above 60 if I can manage it--4k makes that less of an option.

Who says that? That's like saying 1080p is a gimmick and 720p is just fine...

4K isn't really the reason to buy a good 4K TV. It's nice and all and you can definitely see that resolution boost unless you're sort of blind but really, HDR is the game changer.

It doesn't just change games dramatically, it makes movies look absolutely amazing. But most HDR TV's are really crap at HDR. Lots of them talk about HDR like it's some amazing thing, and it is, but it's an amazing thing that they can't actually do properly, not even close.

So read reviews, do your research, buy a TV that handles HDR really well, and you can (and will) thank me later.

I'm not sure who's calling it a gimmick but: I do think there's an over-reliance on it when people choose it over decent gameplay.

Been running that for at least a year with my X, looks pretty darn fantastic to me albeit lower frame rates.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone say it's a gimmick. I have however, and agree, that it has been kind of pointless since most console games weren't taking advantage of 4k in the first place, so there wasn't really much of a point.

On that note, I was looking into a 82" to 96" inch screen for when I move to put in my basement and was heavily considering an 8k.... I have since toned back my thinking though. I mean, since it will be a gaming tv over 80% of the time what would the point be in having 8k when games are still trying to reach 4k? I'll gladly take a larger 4k with all the bells and whistles and take full advantage of what games have to offer next gen either way. Hell.. maybe the next 2 gens.
