Yesterday I dusted off the old N64, did an old school blow on my Goldeneye cartridge, and played perhaps the most important FPS ever released. For all the cool advancements in the FPS genre, Goldeneye still really is an awesome FPS and even looks pretty good. Man, most of the FPS' that get released now a days do not even stack up to how fun this game still is. It really was the first console FPS done right, the auto aim was done brilliantly, the multiplayer was chock full of options, weapons, and modes, the single player was full of challenging objectives and creative design, and blowing up everything in sight while in a tank never got old. What an awesome game. Even 15 years later, this still is an amazing FPS. If only we could see another FPS like this get released...Timesplitters 4 anyone?

Respect to the one console FPS that truly revolutionized the industry.

I have to say, never understood the praise for that game,it was a decent shooter but marred by atrocious controls, not at all one of the great ones(and certainly not the most important) in my opinion.

You must be incredibly nostalgic for it because that game is basically unplayable nowadays.

It is one of the best FPS games ever, but the best is stretching it.

Half-Life, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Halo: Combat Evolved all changed the gaming landscape, were amazing, and unlike Goldeneye are in MUCH more playable state today.

Best? :?

If you rephrased that to "Console FPS," you could maybe make a case, but you obviously never played Half-Life back in the day.

Its like saying there is a greatest song ever when there are so many types and people will always disagree.

Games are pretty subjective, but not as much as music though and maybe not even as much as movies. I guess if you look at it from an objective standpoint, there could be a greatest FPS ever, but even then games (unlike other media) tend to go more radical changes then even the ever changing movies do.

So I guess you are right, if only because there are so many types of FPS games that someone who likes online could state BF2 and someone who loves Atmosphere could state Bioshock.

Perfect Dark 64 pretty much did everything GoldenEye did, only far better - and then added a whole bunch of stuff GoldenEye didn't do for good measure.

So what is it if its not an FPS or adventure? I would have thought FPS since the majority of it is seen in First person view.

I much prefer Doom I & II, since it has aged infinitely better due to the fact that it's smooth with no framerate problems and the controls (m/kb combo) are as solid as they have ever ben.

What stands between people enjoying Goldeneye are the inconsistent framerate and the controls which require time to get used to. Doom doesn't have these problems, and with the plentora of mods at its disposal, it's still a excellent game.

Not sure if serious, but Goldeneye already lost most of its relevance when Perfect Dark came out some 3 years later. Not to mention that Goldeneye, like most 3D N64 games, is pretty much unplayable these days. It was great for its day, but now hopelessly outdated.

Okay, how isn't Metroid Prime an adventure game?

THe gameplay isn't based mostly on solving puzzles and storyline is pretty weak. Myst is First person adventure and Metroid Prime is a lot closer to Halo than to Myst in it's gameplay. Zelda also isn't an adventure game.

Gamespot correctly labels Metroid Prime games as action-adventure, which is completely different genre from adventure.

That's false, if you practice to get used to the controls.. Perfect Dark is actually more horrible, it has worse framerate problems.

Okay, how does having a "weak" storyline deteriorate from being an adventure game? It's not just the puzzles, but the lore behind the world(s) Samus travels. And why is calling it "action-adventure" separate it from being an adventure title? If we're going to do stuff like that, then a lot of Jackie Chan films (examples: Police Story, Armour of God/Operation Condor, Who Am I?, Rumble in the Bronx) aren't Martial Arts films because they have more then just hand to hand fights. Just because they have one thing, doesn't mean it stops it from being something else at the same time.

Because story is one of the most important aspects of adventure genre and one of the main things that separates it from puzzle genre.

. And why is calling it "action-adventure" separate it from being an adventure title? .nintendoboy16
Because action-adventure is completely different genre from adventure. There is a reason why no Metroid Prime game ever was even nominated for best adventure at Gamespot GOTYs.

Calling Metroid adventure just because it has some light elements of this genre makes as much sense as calling Halo a racing game just because you drive a warthog in it.

Even if you would somehow decide action-adventure isn't a separate genre it wouldn't help your case, because then it would just fall into action genre, as games like Metroid Prime play much closer to FPSes than adventure games.

If you really want to play a modern fps that stands up to GoldenEye 64 then I seriously suggest you try the GoldenEye Wii game or the soon to be released GoldenEye Reloaded for Xbox 360 and PS3. It has one of the best single player campaigns I've played, certainly up there with the likes of the original GoldenEye and Halo imo, and a multi-player that I thoroughly enjoyed, in fact more than that of COD imo.

lets be totally honest here. the only reason 007 was so monumental was because there was nothing else like it on consoles at the time.

it isnt a timeless game. it hasnt aged as well as people think.

It really is a great game. It is too bad that this form of a more open-ended fps genre doesn't really exist anymore. Given how far tech has come, it is rather sad that we get a bunch of cinematic hallway shooters.

Unfortunately those are the exceptions, and I still think the fps genre hasn't evolved as much as it could have.
