Since when is selling over 55 million a failure? Maybe compared to the DS but ninty's always been dominating the handheld market (every handheld has sold 80 mill +).

1.because its hacked to hell and back.
2. it has low software ratios which is why compared to the DS there are far less psp games on last check.
3.because it sold less then the DS even though its had about as many remakes of it self in the same time frame.
4.thats really all i can think of.

It is a failure in games compared to the DS IMO. But it's pretty good on it's own.

In a way it is a failure because it was supposed to compete with the DS and was not able to.

But the PSP is a solid machine and has a niche market. Sony will make another handheld, and will remain the alternative to whatever handheld Nintendo comes out with.

I don't think anyone can say PSP is a failure. It's the only handheld ever compete with Nintendo and do well. And both are different enough that you can have each for different reasons.

I don't think its a failure. It is inferior to the DS though as well as terrible at selling software.

The PSP was a great start for Sony to get into the handheld, has anyone any other handheld been able to compete this long with Nintendo in the handheld market.

Well its not a failure by any means, but everybody knows that when Sony came out with it they were directly attacking Nintendo on it's home turf. Nintendo dominated this part of the market ever since they set foot into it to the point of ruthlessly beatinganybody who dared compete with their handheldinto a bloodypulp.

So no the psp isn't a failure because it does make money for Sony, but at the same time Sony failed to accomplish their goal with it as they don't dominate the handheld market as they had intended.

Back when the PSP and the DS were about to be released, "analysts" and "game journalists" were going "OMG PSP r0x0rz almost a PS2 on a handheld. DUAL SCREEN AND TOUCH SCREEN IS TEH GIMMICK. SONY WILL TAKE THE HANDHELD MARKET TOO. NINTENDO IS DOOMED!!!!!!!!!!11111". Now, don't get me wrong, the PSP is fine. It has good games and, in terms of sales, it stood up to Nintendo in a way that absolutely nobody else could in the past. However, since it failed to meet the analysts' crazy expectation, it became a failure to them. Sadly, intarweb forums are full of people who basically repeat what "analysts" and "game journalists" say.

It's got a large userbase, and some good games, so I wouldn't say it's a failure. It's just overshadowed and some downfalls have led to less developer support.

Most people think it's a failure because they walk into a game shop and the PSP section is usually small and hidden somewhere near the back. Many suggest PC gaming is failing for the same reason, but PSP can't hide behind DD.

Because it lacks DS-level Software Support and sales. That and the overall lack of variety, genre-wise.

When I owned the PSP, I liked it and was bummed when it bricked on me. I'm probably not going to buy another though, not for a while anyway.

Its a failure because it was hyped to destroy the DS in every department. But it failed and is considered a failure by many.

It's managed to cracked into the handheld market that was absolutely dominated by Nintendo, the PSP has succeeded where many have failed.

Just is way it is -

  • gamecube and xbox = failures because of the ps2 and PC
  • psp = failure because of the DS
  • wii60 = failure because of the PS3 and PC

We need to stop sugeroating the failures of psp and wii60.

In my humble opinion, the only error Sony made was making it single analogue.

A dual analogue psp would have been so much better than any itteration of the DS that it's unreal.

There is only one more model of the PSP in comparison to the DS. There is the original DS, DS Lite and now, DSi, in the same time, there is the PSP, PSP Slim and Light (I am not sure this is how they spelt it) and then PSP 3000 (some changes to the 2000) and now the PSP-GO, really I hardly think that costitutes failure. The one thing why the DS seems to be leading is complete and utter game saturation, the PSP I would say has had some great titles and it is more powerful system, but it can't compete with the sheer volume of games coming out for the DS.

But reading this forum you believe that quantity over quality is the reason for a platform to win. I love my DS and have some great games on it, but I prefer the PSP as a platform. It is coming back to the people Nintendo are targeting v who MS and Sony are targeting that is why things look different.

One of the rasons I don't play mine is because it tries to shoehorn PS2 games onto a console which lacks two analog sticks. If the PSP had two analog sticks, it would be a much more viable platform, IMO.

It really isn't. It's sold a lot and it has more support than people think. The DS may have more games, but look at how many of those are shovelware. The PSP may have less games, and less AAA/AA games, but it has more than others think. It also makes an excellent MP3 player and works with slideshows and presentations. I presented a school project on my PSP a few weeks ago. If it's a failure because it hasn't sold as much as the DS, then the PS3 and Xbox 360 are failures too.

When something fails, it is no longer made. The PSP has made Sony a profit. The comparison thing is point less. Did it do what it was supposed to do? Yes it earned Sony money.

I was expecting Sony to do better with the PSP, but still to this day i think their biggest problem to sell as well as say the nintendo ds is the high price. people in the world are mostly idiots anyways they spends hundreds on phones so you can't never really know the main problem.

PSP is somewhat of a failure in the context of the west becuase of pirating and low sales but it's a huge success in the context of Japan.

The PSP has amazing hardware, and could have been amazing, but there aren't any games at all for it.

I liked God of War, Tony Hawk, Need for Speed, and Starwars Battlefront, but they weren't that amazing. After that, I just never liked or saw any games that interested me.

PSP is not a failure it's good on its own actually, the DS just happens to be better. It's best to have both, I have both and even though PSP have superior hardware and its games look a lot better than any DS games I still find DS games more appealing and more fun to play specially its local/online multiplayer games and RPGs(my opinion).

yeah. I think sony made a great system with the psp, but they need to make it less expensive and no dev really wants to make games for it seeing how easily it gets hacked. My friend got littlebigplanet yesterday for psp and it comes out tomorrow :|

The PSP is a great console, I don't have one but there are many games which I'd like to play for it. I actually was thinking about getting one, but money is short so I'll have to wait.
