Why did you stop playing?

Repetition nothing turns me off more it's just lazy mission design.

Too much walking. I'm talking about The Medium. I can't even call it a video game.

Just use your imagination and pretend it's two options.

Ubisoft.

Literally nothing (unless the game is a chore like AssCreed, but if that's the case, i wouldn't have bought it to begin with). Not the kind of person that stops playing a game just because there's something i dislike.

I used to quit games when I was stuck on a puzzle but now that everything is on the internet and there’s always plenty of YouTube walk throughs I just resort to looking up the solution when I’m stuck. Nowadays what makes me leave a game is mindless repetition, or excessive walking/traveling with no action (Final Fantasy XV)

• Terrible controls - self explanatory
• Snoozefest stories - if the story isn't interesting, the more I doze off.
• Unskippable Cutscenes - this destroys pacing, and I also tend to doze off.
• Congested Side Quests - if they're not needed for completion at all, why have them in the first place?

There's no such thing as being stuck on a puzzle in 2020. Puzzles are made for children. They're so simple that that i wonder if every developer is taking their fans for a bunch of dumbasses. Like, i could understand puzzles being simple in most E rated (non puzzle heavy titles such as the witness) games, but why are they as braindead in rated M titles that are mostly aimed at adults? So stupid.

@ratchetclank92: Some games I can't even be bothered to look it up. Either that or I just can't get the specific information I need. I mean, some things in Goat Simulator are still a mystery apparently. How do I unlock fire goat on PS4? No, it's not the same as the mobile version. That volcano doesn't even exist on the PS4 version.

More often than not these days, I stop playing a video game because I got distracted and carried away with other things in life. I have myself a bit of an unspoken policy that if I go further than a month not playing a video game, then my playthrough is as good as restarting from the beginning; sometimes, I might end up just shelving the game.

Once it starts to feel like I'm doing chores, I gotta go.

Mostly because the gameplay loop wasn't holding my interest and I needed a break. I usually try to come back after a while, but my backlog is so extensive I often never do. I have a 90hr playthrough of Kingdoms of Amalure that I began in 2013 and I do intend to finnish it... one of these days.

Too much shit thrown at me at once. Usually at the beginning of the game.

I also like the racing section option you have there. I gave up on Vice City back when I first played it on PS2. There was some fat asshole you had to race to get him involved in a heist or something. I could never beat him until a few years later I learned there was a cheat that made cars fly for a bit. I turned it on and he flew all over the place into buildings and shit. It was funny.

This is how I feel about damn near every "open world" game. I already have a job, and a household to take care of. I don't want to turn my game on and worry about another to-do list.

Asscreed: Origins, had to grind repetitive side mission to level up (got to level 30), level locked enemies which I could have killed otherwise. It's the last Asscreed I played (and my most played as well) , for a while at least. Just a boring, repetitive mess in the end.

Forza Horizon 3-4, played them a lot, but never finished them, I guess I got bored.

Hellblade, pretty meh overall.

Sackboy Adventures, a nice game, but 3D World is so, so much better as a co-op game. They tried though.

Edit: I guess the biggest reason would be repetition, but I can deal with it if I find it worth my time (grinding in Souls Games). Shit game design as well, what ever I find to be shitty.

Usually when I start sucking. Which is quite often.

Either difficulty spikes, excessive microtransactions (pay to have fun) or ruined immersion.

When it just feels like a giant waste of time. Like Ubisoft games.

My choice is "Systems/strategies/approach becomes too complex" as this was the reason why I decided to uninstalled Pillars of Eternity yesterday after 10h gameplay. I just can't be bothered to learn and then micromanage all these different characters and their classes/equipment/upgrades/etc.

For me it’s escorted missions and time limit missions. It kills the game for me.

Controls or mechanics that just don't work consistently. Metroid Other M is one that I remember quitting because the dodge mechanic constantly failed. The last straw was when an enemy jumped up, did a literal U-turn in the air, and smashed my character to death. Tried to dodge, but it decided not to work(again).

I took that one straight to Gamestop. Didn't care how much they'd give me for it.

Bad/shitty controls or just horrible game design will turn me off to a game and make me quit. Otherwise I try to complete all the games I start. On rare occasions just outright difficulty will stop me in my tracks, like the last boss in Shank or the second to last level in Super Meatboy.

yeah agreed. you've got to expect it more in certain genres but still there's a balance to be struck between investment of time and energy required from the player to learn, contextual usefulness and the timing of when and how these systems are introduced.

good = systems introduced gradually, piece by piece, each piece making contextual sense with a current in game scenario, well explained and demonstrably valuable.

bad = unintuitive huge skills tree dumped on the player in one go, with umpteen different paths, several different currencies and very little information on why or how you'd want to upgrade these things

Once I've started a game I generally try and finish it.

But if a game takes to long to let me play I loose interest. Starting your game with a 30 min cut scene or pages and pages of text that I have to press X to advance through explains thing that are obvious or that I already know or maybe even wanted to work out myself does not make a good first impression.

I'm gonna go with "pacing" as the usual cause. The specific reason the pacing can be borked is often some of the options above, but long dry patches, random surges in activity, or random brick walls in progress all piss me off and remind me it's a game and the developers are trying to figure out what to do next (and failing)

I was used to play GTA San andreas Multi player and CS 1.6 but now I only play Dota 2 when I got time.

The Last of Us has too much walking too. Literally got bored waiting for the game to get started.

This was pretty much my experience with that game. I made the mistake of getting the Gold Edition (or w/e tf they called it) so eventually I realized i could automatically boost my level to 45 or something ... but even then the gameplay isn't really all that good so I dropped it.

I also quit Days Gone. Got tired of riding/walking around not doing anything interesting in like 3 back to back missions. I'll probably revisit once I get a PS5 just to see the visual upgrade.

I think a high percentage of games I've quit were open world. Watch Dogs 1+ 2, both Mordor games, various Assassin's Creeds, Dead Rising 3, Far Cry Primal.

I quit Remember Me because of how scripted everything outside the combat was and not being able to skip cutscenes.

There is always a wierd lull for me mid to late game where you know the mechanics and the game either becomes super easy or has an insane difficulty spike. At this point you have explored the world enough that merely exploring is not rewarding anymore.

I feel you, i also left Pillars for a while because i just couldn't get pass a certain Boss Battle, i never knew if the boss was Op for the level i had or if it followed a certain strategy i just couldn't find or what and the game failed at telling me what was i missing. I came back several, several months later and i don't remember that well how i beat that battle, i probably went easy mode (i was doing a new character though) but after that, it kind of clicked for me and it hooked me in the best possible way so I was able to finish the game. Love the game but i can definitely see your point. It becomes a chore to keep an eye on everything and even after the final boss battle, i couldn't understand some of the battle mechanics.

Anyway ... aside from that, i don't have a particular reason to why i stop a game ... several months ago i stopped playing Hitman, Colorado mission which it is probably the least fun of the first game, but i really didn't stopped because of that but because life got in the way i guess ... then i got other games and i just have to be in the mood to come back to any game i left.

I don't know, maybe sometimes you just need to take a break.

• When gameplay is too often interrupted with long dialogue cutscenes. I just started playing AC Valhalla, and it feels like a chore

Grinding, too much back trailing or anything repetitive makes me quit a game.

Also anytime I get stuck in a game and have to look on the internet for help, that's when a game loses me and often I'll quit if I have to keep doing that, unless its so good I can overlook it.

If a game is wasting my time and what it's wasting my time with is boring, I instantly quit.

Nobody has to deal with this anymore, there's more games than any of us could ever play, if it sucks or boring, just play something else.

Day's Gone follows the Ubi formula pretty much, but at least it runs at 60 frames per second on PS5. It's okay at best, dunno when I'll grow tired of it, it has some pretty stupid missions (drive to see if your buddy is OK and then drive back to camp). I've completed Demon's Souls, Spiderman Remastered + Miles Morales, Astrowhatever, CoD Cold War SP campaign and GoW, so now I'll just keep playing Day's Gone. Probably gonna finnish my Ghost of Tsushima NG+ later on. Kena: Bridge of Spirits is releasing next month, looks nice, no idea if it's any good though.

I will stop playing a game whenever it stops being fun, which could be for any number of reasons including a sudden spike in difficulty, a particularly annoying mission, a stupidly hard boss battle, or it becomes monotonous or uninteresting.

For me it is almost always linearity and lack of player choice that makes me drop a game. I cannot stand being told exactly how to play a game by developers. I think that is why I love building/creative games, open world games, and games where you get to make your own teams (like Disgaea) so much.

In my opinion Player choice is king.

Bad gameplay, too much grinding, and terrible quests.

I normally stop playing open world games when there is too much icons on the map everything feels like a chore a repetitive. MGS5 is good example towards the final chapter.

@Epak_: Days Gone is good once you get past the first 10 - 20 hours.

Unskippable cutscenes, stopped playing that Star Wars game with the red haired guy because i couldn't skip the cutscenes, beat the second planet got another unskippable cutsecene and said **** it im done and turned it off and have never been back.

I'll stop playing a game if i stop enjoying it.

there can be many causes for me to stop enjoying a game - difficulty spikes, repetition, badly designed puzzles, sometimes just not feeling it.

I've never really understood the "I always finish games I start!" attitude. There are so many games out there and you only have so much time. Why force yourself to play something you aren't enjoying just for the sake of getting to the end?

I feel like this question should be answered on a "per game" basis

SoulCalibur VI: Fighting games. Being Sober. Choose one. (I still play the game from time to time, but not all too frequently because I like having a functioning liver)

Brigador: I think I've seen everything that the game has to offer after unlocking half the pilots and mech, along with nearly every gun.

There are a few games I've completely stopped playing for at least a week or two at a time.

- Days Gone

I stopped playing it least 3 or, 4 times before I eventually finished it on PS5. The game is just a bit too long and, tedious at some points. They could have trimmed like 5-10hrs of the game and, it would have been better.

- Death Stranding

I stopped playing it because the game takes forever to do anything. You'll be lucky to get in more than 2 missions in a single hour of playing it. I have to dedicate at least 3-4hrs to feel like it's worth playing it.

- Red Dead Redemption 2

Similar to Death Stranding. I was exhausted by like Chapter 4; you spend so much time doing side tasks and, missions that the game feels like it'll never ever end. I eventually just powered through the rest of the game and, only did main missions which is still like another 15? hrs. lol

Usually there's a time limit as to how long I can keep doing the same actions over and over again before I get bored of it. So if a game has a combat system that is fairly bland, and basically just me mashing the same buttons over and over again, I just get bored and quit.

Also if a game is too long, even good combat, if done over and over again enough times will start to bore me and I'll find something else to play.

The biggest killer for me though is grinding and tediousness. I hate tedious. I don't like having to do a bunch of repetitive actions to progress. I was recently attempting a full playthrough of Phantasy Star IV not too long ago and it turned out to be one of the most tedious, grindy RPGs I had ever played so I ended up noping out of that one and will probably never go back.

I feel developers have a very hard time with balancing content and length. There was a point in time where games would advertise a certain number of hours of content, but it'd never be good, engaging content, just filler crap. It feels like developers are trying to make every little game be bigger and more grandiose than it really needs to be.

They need to strike a balance and I feel like when we lived in an era where game sizes were limited to a cartridge or a disc, developers did a much better job doing that. Now that game sizes are unlimited it's becoming more of a problem.

You forgot to add forced stealth segments. If a game has forced stealth segments, I delete it if it's digital and burn it if it's physical.
