When SquareEnix announce the beloved FF7 Remake had sold only 5 million copies even after receiving some nice discounts, i just about hit the floor. How could the once deemed System Seller, fall so far from grace. The original FF7 game sold over 13million copies...yet this beauty couldnt even get half those numbers. This game took so many years and had such a big budget, im not even sure they made their money back. AAA games cost more now than ever, and require such massive amounts of years and people to create. Some teams have over 300 people making the game each year.

Maybe because its a remake, and most consider it an old story? The latest series in the story was FF15 and that game sold over 10 million copies. And RPGs are now bigger than ever. Why does SW think it sold so poorly? Do you think the next one will sell poorly too?

I mean... 5M sales isn't exactly "poor" is it? Doesn't sound awful. Was FF15 available on more platforms?

No, but it's Sh*tEnix and they were unhappy with TR 2013 when it sold 10M or so IIRC. But could be profitable because of Sony and EGS exclusivity.

@loonski: Came here to say this, I don't think I've ever purchased a game from Epic....only the free games lol.

A Steam launch would have doubled that easily, but I'm sure Square wanted that upfront money

That is correct. As you point out, those numbers are as of August 2020; FFVII Remake was released on April 10, 2020, and Square Enix issued a press release on August 7, 2020, stating that it had sold over 5 million units.

That means it sold 5 million units in its first about 4 months. Also, most of those 5 million were sold at full price, since the first big discount period (34% off) lasted two weeks, from August 6 to August 19. In other words, the discount was applied for a short period of time after the 5 million units milestone.

That 5 million sales is an outdated number from two years ago, not including sales at the time of the discount, subsequent sales over the next two years, including the PS5 version released in June 2021, and the PC port released in December 2021.

@mesome713: half the reason this game even sold a few million is because of nostalgia. You have all the cows here who had their first crush as a pixelated tifa, or whatever her name was. While we were playing super mario kart back in the day, they were getting it off to 2d pixelated tifa. I never played this game when I was young, so when I play it now, I just don't see the big deal.

This is why people like Mr. Tamoor Hussain should not be allowed to review games. Their nostalgia is messing with the review scores of these types of games. I bought this game, and thought it was overall decent, but not my sort of thing. 5 million sales is still impressive for this game. RPGs generally dont sell so well, especially not jrpgs.

I think it just seems unnecessary. We got a great FF7 game already, and most people would have preferred one huge remake instead of multiple parts to the story every few years.

Correct. The source is an outdated article from 2 years ago. FF7R sold 5M within the first four months. We don't know how much it sold in the 2 years since then.

Also, it took FFXV more than five years to cross 10M sales. So it's an apples-to-oranges comparison. FF7R's lifetime sales will increase over time, and likely cross 10M when all is said and done (especially when the sequel drops).

Square Enix said Tomb Raider was disappointing when it had sold just over 3 million in its first month. When it crossed 5M sales, they were happy with its sales. It took years for TR to cross 10M sales.

I think some IPs get loads of hype of their next gen iterations then subsequent sequels not so much, could be the case here too seeing the disparity between FFXV and FFVIIR.

It also doesn't help when the publisher alienates segments of the market with console exclusivity deals and on PC with Epic Game Store exclusivity.

FFVII remake also released at the tail end of the 8th gen, and in months when the next gen consoles were being revealed and before they launched, so generational transition could have been a factor.

It also a very significant consideration being overlooked has to do with Sony being very inconsistent about their next gen upgrades between PS4 and PS5 that it is no doubt creating hesitancy for PS4 owners to buy games in hopes to get free upgrades to PS5 versions when they finally get their hands on one. Not hard to see why many could be holding off buying games for their PS4 until they get their PS5s because figuring out the next gen upgrade path seems like a game-by-game need to thoroughly research how to get the upgrade because Sony has been all over the map on this and third parties often exacerbate the problem, frankly it's such a headache I wouldn't blame people for sticking a pin in the idea of getting whatever game until they get their next gen systems.

I doubt it's only sold 5 million in the time since that announcement but either way, imo it wasn't necessary.

I played ff7 back on the ps1 and Square-Enix just won't let it be great in the past.

Crisis Core, Advent Children, Remake etc.

It's embarrassing that they're so "remember when?" focused on bygone eras.

Go find a new ff7 and then another and then another Square, please.

That's what Nintendo does, and it's why they dwarf you in profits.

Capcom as well, to a lesser extent.

When all a company can do is look back, they've lost their vision.

Yeah, heck a sequel to the original is also apt. Kinda shows, people who never played FF7R think its a remake when its not lmao.

Yeah, I'm almost certain it will cross 10M sales within a few years. Unless Square Enix somehow screws up the upcoming Rebirth so badly that people stop caring about that remake project altogether, haha.

Of course that doesn't seem very likely given the quality of FF7R, but it is also true that Square Enix is taking a big risk to update the original story. The latest trailer for Rebirth, along with the Yuffie DLC ending, suggests that its world is a parallel universe to, rather than a retelling of, the original. I have high hopes for its ambitious narrative, but at the same time there may be a slight chance that it is so ambitious that it will go in a direction that will greatly disappoint many fans of the original.

It's a cash grab. Split a single game that cost what? $50 in the 90s into a 3 part $70 each trilogy? And that looks more like Rukku from FFX than Cloud.

It didn't sell that bad, but I'll give you three reasons why people like me, who loved the original, haven't bought it yet.

1) Splitting a remake in three parts is a bad idea. There is too much waiting between releases. I am waiting till parts 2 and 3 are closer to release date.

2) I don't want to play this on my paltry PS4. I am waiting for a PS5 slim console before I buy the remake. Or maybe an Xsex release.

3) I have a bad feeling that I won't like the remake as much as the original and am not willing to pay full price for any of the three titles.

@Pedro: Well this is FF7, so I feel like they could have really taken their time and made this a complete, fully fleshed-out modern version of the game, and then charged $100 for it and gotten that.

They had quite a bit of time to work on the game, but I wonder if maybe it's an issue of manpower or something.

@mesome713:

1) Its an epic exclusive

2) Its an incomplete game sold for full price.

I'm personally gonna hold off on buying any of the FF7 remakes until they all come in 1 package at a decent price AND either on Steam or GOG, screw EPIC.

@Dark_sageX: It is on Steam. It's also not really incomplete, it's more of a sequel of sorts than anything.
