Why can't the consoles run old PC games?

Quake 4, run like ass...... Half Life 2.... runs lower then it does on the same hardware on PC...... FEAR runs a lot slower on consoles.....

Lets take FEAR... 1280x720 at 30fps on console with very some very slighty tweaked lighting....

FEAR on a 7800 GTX ( RSX ) runs maxed out at 1280x1024 with no AA at nearly 67fps..

Even an Nividia 6800GS, a GPU that has half the power of RSX runs the game at the same frame rate....

What about Doom 3?

Console version runs at 1280x720 at 60fps with dynamic resolution scaling and no MSAA..

PC 7800 GTX runs the game at 1280x1024 with 4xMSAA at 74fps and 108fps with no MSAA...

Console are weak sauce....

Probably for the same reason your PS3 cant run ARMA 2. The difference between the PS3 and PC in this argument is that the PC COULD run GOW3 if it was made for PC too yet PS3 doesnt have a hope in hell of running ARMA 2.

It misses a whole level on the console version... and if I remember correctly there are more artificial barriers to prevent you from straying too much... the nanosuit is different...

On topic: Easy answer, those old PC games were written for PC and not for console. Games made with PC in mind do not port well to PC despite the opposite.

Can't just take a DX game or an OpenGL game and run it on a console. OpenGL and DX are built for the X86 instruction set. No console has an X86 architecture.

So they have to actually port the renderer to the API of the game console. That's a time consuming process and often it doesn't work well.

The rumors are that the PS4 will have an X86 architecture which is amazing for developers. If it does have the X86 chip, it will be able to get PC ports much more easily and be extremely easy to program for if you're coming from the PC world.

Also the replies in this thread sum up everything that's wrong with SWs. Ignorance everywhere.

Yes I get it, Crysis is on consoles and you are in denial about it so you pretend Crysis on consoles is NOT Crysis on consoles despite very clearly being Crysis, on consoles, with the same levels and weapons and team and characters and literally the exact same game except not as pretty as maxed Crysis and control changes (but still prettier than Crysis on lower settings).
