Why are Sony male protagonists attractive, but females ugly?

Guys like Nathan Drake and Kratos make me feel insecure. They're tall, muscular, rugged, and handsome. Either make a 5'9" skinny fat male protagonist with a receding hairline or make more beautiful women.

Edit: I would also like to bring to light the fact that Delsin is part Native (or Indian or whatever non-offensive term people like these days), the guy from Ghost of Tsushima is Japanese, and Kratos is white but voiced by a black man. The women on the other hand are all invariably white.

I have also noticed a similar situation in Youtube advertising. Lately you can realize a lot the effect that the last year of tumult has had on the racial composition of actors for publicity. Most of them are black males now. I would say there is nothing wrong with that, but at the same time, it does seem like a thoughtless reaction. If you read the stats, black men were already the best represented minority in television. being very close to their percentage of representation in the US population.

On the other hand, Latin people in general and black women in particular were much worse represented and continue to be like that. So it seems more like knee jerk reaction than an actual action to address problems of lack of representation.

I, particularly, as a latin-american man, would like at least, not be always represented as a drug dealer or blue collar uneducated worker. Frankly, i dont even expect to get representation in US TV, similar to the actual percentage of hispanic US population, but at least, I would like that it that, every time i go abroad, i dont have to deal with most foreigners immediately associating my ethnicity with drug dealers.

Kassandra is ugly?

One of the best female designs seen in a modern game. Ignoring the fact Assassins' Creeds gameplay is ass.

I think a lot of these discussions involve personal taste. I find kassandra very regular looking. Like a girl that wouldn't really catch my eye, but I would not consider ugly either.

It should be noted that bioware was accused of making her main female character appear less good looking too in mass effect 3, so its not only a Sony thing.

I personally agree with the idea that they are making females and only females more regular looking. I dont think its a woke conspiracy. Its just society following trends without thinking about them and large companies eager to please their consumers and act "morally good" as long as they dont risk loosing money over it. (this does not happen when acting morally good requires them to loose money, such as standing to human right abuses in China)

if the trend right now was that middle eastern people faced great disadvantage from society, more main characters would be middle eastern, if the trend was that deaf people were receiving attention as disadvantaged by society, then more main characters would be deaf. What ever the society focuses on creates a reaction from the entertainment industry. They wont think about it or make logical choices, they will follow the emotional reaction of the rest of society.

Yeah, but if I wanted to stare at a fat, ugly chick from behind for a few hours a day I could just go sit at my local Walmart. I thought gaming was supposed to be an escape from reality.

At some point you have to stop and wonder if they're actually following a trend, or trying to create one. When most people find many of the characters being forced and unlikable, I would say the latter is true. TLOU2 most definitely tried forcing it, most people despise that character, so they clearly didn't ask for her, people who played the early Resident Evil titles feel Capcom failed in their redesigns of Claire and Jill. Nobody is asking these companies to do this. Few people are praising it. They're trying to shape public opinion, not follow it, and I think that's where a lot of people get tired of it.

We're tired of being told who and what we should find attractive or relatable. That goes for nasty ass goblins like Abby, and soy boy male protagonists alike.

It is not longer an American thing. It has spread across the West.

I think when it comes to that specific character of the last of us, its more about an attempt to make more women that dont conform to gender stereotypes or the idea of trying to make more strong female characters (this time by making them literally physically strong)

When it comes to personalities of the characters and specifically making characters conform less to gender stereotypes, i think it could be the opinion of the employees and writers of the game companies that drive these desitions. Artist and writers tend to be more left leaning and you find a greater proportion of gay and transexual people in those industries. Its also become common right now to see not conforming to gender stereotypes as a positive thing in those circles, as if you could add a moral quality to something like that.

I personally dont have a positive or negative opinion about that. Just maybe that its aimed at a different consumer that is not you or me.

But i think that has a different reason from the other examples we mentioned, because those are more made to make women feel better about themselves .They simply make regular looking characters, so the female users cannot compare themselves negatively against the characters.

@eoten: It is quite funny that they want to offer a more "realistic" women and they do this by modeling Abby after a juicer? how's that not unrealistic for an average woman to achieve lol? I get that not every character needs to look like a super model, but promoting form that's only obtainable with steroids seems a bit unhealthy.
