I wanted to keep it open to both developers, publishers and other type of company in the business.

  1. Platinum Games - developers of Bayonetta series, Vanquish, Nier Automata, Astral Chain. I love the stylish action of their games. I also like the way their games control, although Nier was kinda floaty (I still enjoyed it). To me, these guys are up there with Capcom as top action developers, but I think P+ is better.
  2. Atlus/Sega - so many great franchises with these two. Love Persona series especially Persona 4 Golden. Yakuza is a series that I only recently got into, but I knew after playing Yakuza 0 that I would be a fan. I'm also a fan of the Valkyria Chronicles series although I've only played the first one lol.
  3. Nintendo - I was a passive Nintendo fan growing up. I would say my favorite system was the N64 followed by GameCube. Then they lost me with the Wii (although it was fun playing Wii Bowling in college). Then the Wii U came out, and it wasn't that bad. Had a few gems there. But the Switch is by far my favorite console of theirs. If only the next can handle third party games better. Give us the Pro, Nintendo!
  4. Sony - I was a pretty staunch defender of the PS3 back in the day. SW really hated me back then lol. But the PS4 is definitely a better console. I think its on the way to being the best Sony system. Great first party support, third party support, and Japanese games! They also saved us from the terrible all digital future.
  5. Capcom & Square Enix (tie) - I think they're finally listening to their fans and investing in the franchises we've all come to love. Resident Evil is back, and hopefully Final Fantasy too. I give Square credit for teaming up with P+ on Nier Automata, and now Babylon's fall.

And there it is, SW. My top 5 gaming companies from the last decade. And yours?

BGS: Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 are both amazing; West Virgina is the best wasteland ever created; Skyrim is fun to dabble around in

Capcom: Street Fighter V is the best fighter Ive ever played, Resident Evil 7 was amazing, and they finally went global with Monster Hunter World; MHGU has crazy depth and variety

Nintendo: BotW knocked my socks off; Fire Emblem 3 houses is great; Switch is the best console Ive ever owned

From Software: I dig the 3rd person action RPG of the Dark Souls games - a lot of build variety, but also a lot of griefing

Subset Games: May be a reach, but few games pull me in the way FTL and Into the Breach do

Cant think of 5 right now but number 1 is this.

They bring back Doom to this generation as a result it become game of decade. making sequel to best game of decade into start of new decade which also looks masterpiece. further before they invented FPS genre and revolutionize it, They also made Excellent horror FPS that was Doom 3 which was masterpiece too. only their weak point war Rage and that was also quite decent game.

He makes me want to go on a murderous rampage... lol. Broken f*cken record.

Anyway, my top 5 companies would be (this was a tough one to narrow down!):

  • Nintendo (mainly for game development - hardware has been hit & miss)
  • Platinum Games
  • Playdead
  • Rockstar Games
  • Devolver Digital/Annapurna Interactive (some of the best games I've played this gen in particular have been indies - and these 2 published a lot of them)

Honourable mentions: Playground Games (Forza Horizon games are incredible), Moon Studios, Machine Games & The Coalition

Two studios primarily jump out as having watershed decades:

FromSoftware. CD Projekt Red.

A number of others are a notch below:

Epic Games. Mojang. Arc System Works.

Probably EA, Bethesda, Ubisoft, Konami, Activision/Blizzard.

The hilarious stuff these guys have tried to get away with in the last 10 years have given me a lot of entertainment, I love it. It's why I give them the top 5 hero award.

It could be a tie between EA and Bethesda at this point, I couldn't rightfully say which one makes me laugh more. But Activision can't be completely left out either, they provide some good laughs to us all as well. Remember the time they had record profits but laid off hundreds of people anyways?

I'll only mention IP's since there are too many individual games:

  • SEGA - Sonic, Yakuza (& spinoffs), House of the Dead, All-Stars Racing, Valkyria Chronicles, Virtua Fighter, Virtual On, Persona, Vanquish, various remakes, remasters, and the Genesis/MD mini
  • Capcom - Mega Man, Street Fighter, Devil May Cry, and a whole lot of Ace Attorney
  • CD Projekt Red - Witcher
  • Sony - Gravity Rush, Spider-Man, God of War, and MLB: The Show
  • FromSoft - Bloodborne and Dark Souls

Digital (swap) Devolver - Their varous published titles might not always be the best, but they are always interesting, happily lay $$$ down for these fellows.

CDP - They had an altruistic mentality, which in this industry is like seeing a UFO with tits attached. It deservingly payed off.

Capcom - Still very much greedy shits, but they produce jolly good games.

Crowbar Collective - Prime example of what can be done by a passionate community. This game started development with 0 expectations on the user end, with thousands of hours of man-work for people working freely. And even at a price the game is still at a relevantly poultry price. I'd like to see these fellows expand flourish.

Larian Studios - Another success story, while many have given Kickstarter a bad name, Larian Studios delivered on what they promised and more. Using the platform to free them from the shackles to make the game they always wanted to make from the start, instantly jumping from what as a B grade developer to being put on a pedestal as one of the best RPG developers around atm.

  • From Software - I'm a sucker for Souls.
  • Larian Studios - Great example of how to do crowd-funding. I really enjoyed the D:OS games.
  • CDPR - GOG is the best place to buy digital games on the infernet.

Also in a world where the industry is becoming more fucked by the day, these guys still make good games without psychologically strangling the user into spending money.

Also special thanks to indie devs in general. Despite being under constant hate, they keep bringing gem after gem, almost at a daily basis. Indie gaming becoming relevant was easily the best thing that happened to this industry in decades.

Nintendo - When are they never?

Obsidian - New Vegas ALONE was worth it for them

TT Games - LEGO games still kick ass

Bethesda - 76 Disaster aside, I still adored Skyrim and FO4. Other devs like ID, Arkane and Machine games also get a mention

Yacht Club Games - Even with just Shovel Knight, these guys know how to support.

Valve: while they don't make many games these days, their positive impact on the industry can't be stressed enough. If not for Valve and their digital marketplace Steam, I would not have been introduced to a fraction of the games I play. Furthermore, they are a leading and large part of the burgeoning VR movement, and play a critical role in it.

Obsidian: they have an interesting history because they made some really great (albeit buggy!) games, notably Fallout: New Vegas and Alpha Protocol, but then they almost sort of disappeared off the map for a few years, only to come back with the acceptable but also hilarious South Park RPGs, the Pillars of Eternity series, Tyranny, and finally The Outer Wilds (and some other games, too).

Arkane: in addition to the incredibly amazing play-how-you-want-to-play Dishonored series, they also did the Prey reboot, which was equally amazing.

Blizzard: sorry-not-sorry, but WoW is still one of the greatest games, and definitely the greatest MMO, out there. After 15 years of success and expansions and great experiences, they sort of iced the cake by finally releasing WoW Classic. Furthermore, I have really enjoyed Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2.

Devolver Digital: they don't publish all of my favorite games, but they do a great service by bringing us games from smaller studios, and in the past decade we have received all of the below (and more):

  • Hotline Miami
  • Enter the Gungeon
  • My Friend Pedro
  • Carrion (OK it's not out yet, but it will be soon, and that demo was AMAZING!)
  • Ruiner
  • Gris
  • Absolver
  • Broforce
  • Shadow Warrior 2
  • Ape Out
  • Reigns
  • Metal Wolf Chaos
  • Downwell
  • various Serious Sam games
  • Genital Jousting
  • Gorn
  • Mother Russia Bleeds
  • Titan Souls

Agree 110%.

The only problem is there are just too many awesome ones to name!

I would gladly give up so-called "AAA" games if it meant more and better independent games.

1. PlatinumGames - They don't need the IP rights to make a Devil May Cry game. NieR Automata and Metal Gear Rising shows that this is the case.

2. Texel Raptor - A very obscure nomination, but they made the true RollerCoaster Tycoon 4. I know people would say that the Frontier-developed Planet Coaster is that game though I find that the park management part of Parkitect has been executed a hell of a lot better in that you'll actually know what you're doing wrong when your profits are dipping. Also, i get the impression that killing your guests is probably the first sign of a good theme park management game.

3. Devolver Digital - They allowed Metal Wolf Chaos to be a thing in the international market and to be honest, I feel like they're the only company interested in a mech game from From Software while everyone else recognizes them as the Dark Souls guys. Plus, their methodology in marketing and game publishing is probably why indie studios under their wing can succeed

4. CD Projekt Red - Yes, we all know how good a game The Witcher is, though I feel like GOG doesn't get enough love in the modern think space of gaming. IMHO, there's absolutely no excuse for games without any online components to not be on GOG. Maybe i'm a bit biased towards them due to two too many close calls regarding the disappearance of my Steam Library.

5. Bulwark Studios - They made Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus, which is probably the best Warhammer 40K game since the death of THQ

Off the top of my head, and if I'm not rattling off a list of fighting game devs.

Capcom, Nintendo, Platinum, From Software...

And **** it, will round out number 5 with Yacht Club. I know there are more worthy picks, but Shovel Knight and the Specter of Torment expansion were pure fun from start to finish. Still need to play King of Cards.

No particular order.

  • Nintendo - As much as I'm still pissed at them for no new F-Zero, they did give us amazing Mario and Zelda games
  • Sony - All around fantastic first party titles. Last of Us, God of War, Horizon, Spider-Man
  • Bluepoint - Hey, they gave me the amazing Shadow of the Colossus remake that made me get a PS4 Pro and a 4K TV, so they get a nod just for that.
  • Bethesda - I just loved how they were so on board with bringing games to the Switch. They really helped pave the way for other publishers sitting on the fence. Plus, Skyrim.
  • SE - Four or five years last decade was spend on one game: Final Fantasy XIV. As much as I dislike a lot of things with the game now (currently quit), I still ended up enjoying myself in Eorzea, and they also earned a lot of my respect for accepting accountability for the horrible launch of FFXIV 1.0 and completely reworked it. Very few companies do that.
