Hello Friends,

In this thread, we talk about silent protagonists and which one we find best and our favorite. Even Though i believe Doom Slayer is most badass silent protagonist of all time but i can easily go with no other than Dr Gordon Freeman

He may not speak a single word but he has more personality than most of talkative protagonist. He is Brilliant scientist. who was conducting research that gone wrong and thus the invasion of alien begins, he fight them, then HECU army want to kill all black mesa scientist and they start to silent the witness, but they cant mess with dr freeman. he fight them too. went to xen alien planet to destry them, save city 17 from combine and destroy dr breen who sold the earth.

Valve were truely genious. they wrote such an amazing character who never spoken a single word in the game.

so anyways friends, who is your best silent protagonist? lets discuss

  • Issac Clark from Dead Space (first game)
  • Link from Legend of Zelda series
  • Doomguy from Doom
  • Rookie from Halo 3: ODST
  • The Exile from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords

All five are my favorite silent protagonist.

Doom guy. Those facial expressions were a key part of those first two games. Hope they bring it back for the new one.

I have to agree with ghost on this one. Shame on me. ?

@vaidream45:I was just watching some random Doom video on YouTube and was thinking about that. The feedback you got on the first game was great and it's a shame that was lost. In Doom 2016 you feel kind of like a machine going through wave after wave.

True, Lara is basically a scream machine, killing machine, or dead machine.

Best silent protag for me would be any Bethesda Game Studios games prior to Fallout 4--pick one, I like them all.

From the little tidbits of story-telling Halflife 2 gives us Gordon Freeman is presented as the polar opposite of Dr Breen. Someone steeped in myth, romanticism, larger and than life actions inspiring others. Acting irrational against seemingly overwhelming unbeatable odds.

Dr.Breen is a matter-of-fact realist, removing the individual, encouraging citizens to becomes dulled. The combine won easily so it would be rational to comply. With the combine them-selfs basically the games equivalent of the Borg where they homogenize the invaded than destroy. Becoming a faceless drone of an insect collective. Which advisors literally are,.

Leaving Gordon Freeman to be a deliberately vague thematically works well than it would if he was defined as "hero man", who says stuff like "eat this you slimballs!" Aside from the player imprinting themselves as a heroic nerd who some Asian babe wants to be impregnated by, it ties in with him being like that Batman speech with Alfred on the plane in that bit in Batman Begins where he evolved into an idea when everything seems Danny Dyer.

Dr Breen is probably the best villain ever. He did what he think is right. He sold entire earth and surrender to combine alien forces and they select him as their administrator. He knows humans cant win the 7 hour war.

Yep. Games are almost always lazy or obvious with villains.

Heck, Valve are with Portal 2. Glados was popular, a meme, so instead of doing something interesting, they just made her a good guy, cause the kids like that.

Reminds me a lot of The Spy Who Loved Me. Jaws, is a superb henchman, he's the highlight more so than the main villain.

And then we get Moonraker.

That's Portal 2 basically. Moonraker.

None of them. My ideal character would definitely talk, even if they're more an observer and only speak when necessary, like Mad Max or the man with no name. Mute characters suck and hurt immersion.

Also, Gordon has no personality. You're full of it.

The Hunter in Bloodborne is probably the coolest, but so is Corvo who I don't recall talking in game, but maybe spoke in cut-scenes in the 2nd one.

Ori and pals from the Blind Forest game, they did have a narrator but their speechless interactions spoke volumes.

Gordon Freeman, age 27, graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a PhD in Theoretical Physics and works as a Research Associate at the Black Mesa Research Facility in New Mexico. He is assigned to the Anomalous Materials Laboratory, has a level 3 security clearance, and an administrative sponsor listed – cryptically – as classified. His thesis was titled Observation of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Entanglement on Supraquantum Structures by Induction Through Nonlinear Transuranic Crystal of Extremely Long Wavelength (ELW) Pulse from Mode-Locked Source Array (the behavior of large stuff {Supraquantum Structures} relative and related to each other {Entanglement} after a very short duration {Mode-Locked} "Extremely Long Wavelength Pulse" by an arrangement {Array} of crystals with an atomic number greater than 92 {Transuranic}, without coming into physical contact with the structures in question {Induction}) (essentially about the teleportation of matter through the use of extremely dense elements).

He has more personality and backstory than most of voiced protagonist. He is a scientist. how many video game characters are that brilliant scientists??

@ghosts4ever: Being impossibly brilliant doesn't make someone a good character. Batman has mastered 127 forms of martial arts, which is just stupid if you think about it. He would need several lifetimes to do that. There's a lot more to a well written, compelling character than their IQ.

when gordon freeman escape from ravenholm. many people including resistance members couldnot believe that he escape because anyone went there never came back.

thats actually a big part why dr freeman is not only badass but intelligent scientist.

Gordon Freeman is basically treated as the player's avatar in Half Life. The only thing that makes him at all interesting is what he's been through and that was only accomplished through the player. I've beaten Half Life 1 and 2 and if Gordon has a personality, I have no clue what it is.

He doesn't do anything angerly or lazily or hasty. Only with precision and tact. Freeman might as well be a robot and he would still have the same effect on you. Hell, maybe that's where Valve got the idea of controllable robots for Portal 2 multiplayer! But even Peabody and Atlas have more personality than Gordon Freeman.

Definitely would go with Corvo from Dishonored. Loved how the player's actions affect (minimally) the way the world reacts to him.
