Poll Who is the current market leader? (71 votes)

Sony 52%
Nintendo 35%
Microsoft 13%

Arguments for each:

Sony: PS4 has the most sold units of currently available systems; PS5 is fastest selling console in first 5 months; highest reported software sales and attach rate; #1 in gaming revenue

Nintendo: Fastest selling console ever after 4 years; #1 in first party software sales; 2020 Switch sales were the highest of any console ever; #1 in gaming profit

Microsoft: Game Pass is the most popular subscription and cloud service; they own the best selling game ever

This is about the market, not software quality.

Market leader is the one leading current gen, for me thats the nintendo switch.

Switch is outselling PS5 and X-Series its the best selling system right now and has a big lead over the PS5 and XSX if thats not the leader I dunno what it is your outselling everyone else your winning.

How is the Switch beating out the PS4? If you're going by current sales, then yes you're right. As it it, there's less Switches than PS4s in homes. That likelt won't change soon.

The way I see it Sony is onto the PS5 Microsoft is onto X-Series and Nintendo is still on Switch...Most people don't play ps4 anymore they are moving on to the newer systems.

Talking about ps4 and switch sales and how ps4 sales are higher is silly. Yes switch has sold less but its still out pacing ps4 and with games like BOTW 2 still to come switch sales are not going to slow down any time soon. Ps4 is only around 30 million ahead of switch and switch has been out for about 3 and a half years less than ps4.

@lebanese_boy: that game is gtav, and MS does not own it.

Also, there is a correct answer to this question.

No, it's Minecraft.

Where are you people getting the idea that GTAV outsold Minecraft? Weird.

GTAV may have made more money than Minecraft which is maybe what's getting these guys confused.

GTA V isn't the highest grossing game. lol. It isn't even top ten... Forum gamers are in a bubble, but this is ridiculous.

Actually it is. Maybe. Depending on what metric but GTA V did generate $1billion in 2020 for Take Two and as of April 2018 is the most profitable media product of all time.

Minecraft of course sold more but that game is $20 and usually hits $5.

No. There is no way GTA V pulled in more money than the top PC games and mobile games. That is a flat out lie. https://vgsales.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_video_games

Almost a billion in 2020? Quick research shows that Fifa and Call of Duty out earned GTA in 2020... Those are premium games by the way. It doesn't factor in free to play games where the entire top 10 out earn GTA V for the year 2020. https://www.bosshunting.com.au/hustle/highest-earning-video-games-2020/

Most profitable media product of all time? Uh... Does this guy not do basic research? Once again, mobile games and PC games. Also, actual products such as Pokemon, Hello Kitty, Disney Franchises, really popular old anime, etc. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_media_franchises

As said depends on metric but I do disagree on some of your points. According to VGSales site it is based on inflation and on that chart they last update GTAV numbers which was last reported in april 2018 and not include merchandise sales like some in the list.

Bosshunting also put GTAV on 3rd for 2020. 8 year old game vs new games and also not including figures it collected over its 8 years lifetime.

Most profitable media product of all time is not a lie and there is no lie in the statement. The game made huge money compared to its budget and its 1 game versus multiyear/multigame/multiproject franchises like Pokemon/cod/ hello kitty and etc.

I agree mobile games do make more money though.

Most people want to move on, but due to demand/supply, most people in fact have not moved on.

Possible, but not likely.

More likely than not at this point. PS4 sales have dropped off a cliff, and it's only about 30 million ahead. Switch can easily sell 45-50 million units between April 2021 and the end of next year; I'll be surprised if PS4 manages another 5 million with how quickly it died when PS5 launched.
