Poll Who is the current market leader? (71 votes)

Sony 52%
Nintendo 35%
Microsoft 13%

Arguments for each:

Sony: PS4 has the most sold units of currently available systems; PS5 is fastest selling console in first 5 months; highest reported software sales and attach rate; #1 in gaming revenue

Nintendo: Fastest selling console ever after 4 years; #1 in first party software sales; 2020 Switch sales were the highest of any console ever; #1 in gaming profit

Microsoft: Game Pass is the most popular subscription and cloud service; they own the best selling game ever

This is about the market, not software quality.

They get TONS of revenue from every single Windows license, and every single Microsoft game sold on those billions of devices.

Well MS gaming division has been bleeding money, so I would say Sony or Nintendo are the leaders .

Not sure who is the market leader to be honest. Everything at the moment is hodgepodge of companies doing different things.

I can't speak for America but over here it's definitely Sony. The Xbox consoles are more of a small niche here compared to PlayStation and while the Switch is popular, Nintendo have never been super big here outside that and the Wii.

I know it's not Microsoft, although they are the most enticing right now from a consumer perspective.

Nintendo and Sony are doing great but they aren't overstepping each other so it's hard to tell. Maybe Sony? Maybe because of having a really toxic user base I feel like their presence is more noticeable than Nintendo.

Honestly not sure and can’t say that I’m terribly concerned about it either. They all have compelling products that I enjoy and that’s really all that matters to me at the end of the day.

Yup! All Windows licenses from those. That is billions of PC's. Then all the games from the 35 Xbox Game Studios on PC, including Steam, XBL. Game Pass Revenue. Xbox Live Revenue, Xbox console sales. I figure they will hit a half trillion in gaming revenue in the next 5 years.

Of the big 3 i would rank them as

1) Sony. hugely successful PS4. cant make the PS5 fast enough. Generates a crap ton of money. basically its mandatory to publish on AAA game on playstation. you would be leaving too much on the table by ignoring them.

2) Nintendo. This and MS can switch at the drop of a hat. but they are currently printing stupid amounts of money for such a relatively small operation. however nintendo can also be ignored in the multiplat side of the business (especially in the AAA sector. indies do well with nintendo at the moment though).

3) MS. at the moment its a lot of bluster and hot air coming from them while they trade on value and low entry prices for gamepass to get people hooked. they are not setting anything alight. but that could very easily change. on paper they now have one hell of a formidable first party and the exclusive content they can bring to gamepass could cause quite a big upset. they are definitely the company to watch at E3 this year.

but yeah this can all change. Sony could find themselves going from an industry leader and console trend setter to the leader of a business model that's just about to die as MS render the console hardware business a mere afterthought. or it could all backfire completely on them as the market rejects the games as a service model. or maybe the way demographics are going less people have access to TVs and nintendo choices with the switch really pay off.

...or valve decide to release a game with a 3 at the end and all hell breaks loose.

....oh god i forgot about valve! probably just below sony to be honest. possibly slightly above.

Not Nintendo, we can probably be sure about that since they are strictly a video game company.

I'd guess MS since they are more of a software company, where the margins are much higher than hardware like Sony.

I'd guess MS makes the most revenue as well as the most profit.

Be interesting to see some real numbers, but I don't care enough to search.

Without a doubt PlayStation. They have the most hardware on the market, most active monthly users, most network subscribers, most revenue etc.

UK?

As for the US, Switch has been the #1 selling console in units every month since November 2018, so I think the answer is pretty clear here.

I'm talking about the video game market specifically. Only video game sales and revenue count. Obviously it's Microsoft if we're just talking about who's the biggest company.

Actually, not even that's true. Then it would be Apple.

I have no idea.

Sony would be likely, I guess. They have popular consoles and lots of other shit.
MS has perhaps even more shit, though, not sure.
Nintendo only makes games. If they would be the market leader, both MS and Sony would be incredibly owned.

Not sure what the point is with these kind of polls. It just comes down to which fanboys are online right now and sees this poll. If most Sony fanboys haven't been banned or scared away from this place by smarter people already, Sony's gonna win the poll as usual despite what it's about.

Actually it is. Maybe. Depending on what metric but GTA V did generate $1billion in 2020 for Take Two and as of April 2018 is the most profitable media product of all time.

Minecraft of course sold more but that game is $20 and usually hits $5.

@techhog89: Well, it's true that the Switch is selling quite well in NA, but the total PS4 sales are still estimated to be higher. In addition, PS5 is the most popular next-gen console, but Nintendo has not yet answered it. Also, the most popular titles in NA, such as COD and Madden, are most played on PS4/PS5, but not on Switch.

I'd say at this current time it's probably SONY, Nintendo, MS. However Nintendo is at the front door and MS is scheming in the corner. Meanwhile SONY is SONY and sits there over confidently while drinking tea with their pinkies out and laughing smugly. Sometimes SONY needs a good smack to realign their goals... I truly hope that isn't the case yet once again. A healthy industry means all three are competing.

How is the Switch beating out the PS4? If you're going by current sales, then yes you're right. As it it, there's less Switches than PS4s in homes. That likelt won't change soon.
