A video games story is told through each persons personal experience playing the game.

I remember playing quake 2 online on the map the edge and i was on the top floor rocket hallway area and a dude shot a rocket at me i crouched under it he shot at me again and i jumped over it lol then i railed him in the face.

To the Moon and The Walking Dead.

Also, this thread is making me tempted to get Spec Ops.

my favorite stories?

of games that i have played.

  1. Mass Effect series up until those 10-15 minutes.
  2. Fallout : New Vegas
  3. Catherine
  4. Spec Ops : The Line
  5. The Walking Dead
  6. Back To The Future (for a Back to the Future story, it's pretty awesome)
  7. Red Dead Redemption
  8. Portal 2

----------

Games i still need to play through:

Persona 4 Golden, To The Moon, Witcher 1 and 2, Stalker series.

----------

game stories that i really enjoy but wouldn't nominate for best story for an objective (as best as possible):

  1. Ace Combat 5 : Unsung War + Ace Combat 0 : Belkan War
  2. Call of Duty Black Ops 1 and 2
  3. inFamous 1 and 2
  4. Assassin's Creed series
  5. Deus Ex : Human Revolution
  6. Sly Cooper series

quite a few other games really where the story wasn't the shining point but didn't hurt the game either. In fact often help make the games much more fun.

This is what i could think of off top of my head.

Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason. Video game stories hardly ever impress me, but this was nothing short of brilliant.

[QUOTE="DarkLink77"]An interesting read. Perhaps Spec Ops is the game he mentions at the end, because it's one of the few titles I don't think suffers from ludonarrative dissonance. Unless we were to go meta and argue that it does because we, as players, are allowed to progress by fulfilling the actions the game finds morally reprehensible (killing).

Arguable! Hard to say really, I think the whole Citizen Kane stuff is a little reaching at times - and hell, the film only received that high regard well after it screened - so who knows for videogames. Though yeah, Spec Ops sure as hell is a super important game, even just as a game that's focused on saying something about games. You're right though it doesn't suffer ludonarrative dissonance - expect for one scene I'm aware of, which is that bit at the start with the C4 being dropped - and your squaddie deciding to break a door down; hell the disconnect is one of the major themes There is that meta element though, and that does have some relevance I'd say - the game was criticised for that specifically - in regard what you're saying; but heck, the game even comments on that challenging the player to put down the game and walk away to opt out, the same way narratively speaking the game never stops Walker from violently trudging along from objective to objective - despite going off the rails in the first 15mins. It's a title that raises more questions then answers, but damn they're pointy and important questions.
