When you thought $70 dollars was a bit insane, SEGA/Atlus makes it worse with Etrian Odyssey

Nintendo Everything

When Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection was announced for Switch last month, some were surprised by the price point. Atlus – and parent company SEGA – is charging $80 for the package. That’s quite a steep amount given that other similar packages haven’t really hit that mark.

SEGA has now commented on the decision in an interview with IGN. The company pointed to the amount of content included, believing that “players will be very excited for in the first three games of the remastered series”.

SEGA’s full statement on the price point for Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection is as follows:

“Yes, the collection is available for purchase at $80. With this purchase, players will get 30+ hours of gameplay for Etrian Odyssey HD and 50+ hours for Etrian Odyssey II and III, plus free DLC portrait sets of popular characters from other Atlus IP when they pre-order. That is a lot of content and gameplay that we think players will be very excited for in the first three games of the remastered series for Nintendo Switch and Steam.”

All of the games included in Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection will be available individually on the eShop. However, that does raise the price even more. Etrian Odyssey I, II, and III HD are all set at $39.99 each.

...

What the f***?! Criminy... cult series or not, this does not bode well for game pricing.

"Consumer friendly" SEGA, everybody...

Most expensive game I ever got was Phantasy Star 4. 100 bucks in 1995 lol.

Sega are pros at this.

Yeah I was a bit taken aback when I saw the price for this after it was announced. Never played these games before but was interested in checking them out when they were announced, until I saw the price. Yeah I’ll pass. 😅

I think people complaining about the price are the ones not interested in the games and the collection.

Doesn't bother me. After 70, the floodgates are open as far as I'm concerned. I expect them to keep putting the prices up. I wouldn't be surprised if games eventually cost 100 as a standard. Fucking 70 per game... Whatever I give up. But lems are apparently the assholes for supporting Gamepass, not the publishers raiding our wallets. You think they need it? When they sell millions of copies at 60 they're not gonna cover the costs? My ass.

Isn't the game series 15 years old at this point, however?

You're essentially paying more than new-game price for a remaster of an old game.

It reeks of "fans will pay whatever we want, so let's charge them more". It's exploitive.

Remember when this released for not even the price of one of these games with two, massive effort remasters that looked more like remakes? Including the original games, the soundtrack, behind the scenes stuff etc?

Loading Video...

Remember how 15 minutes Nightdive studios was selling high effect remasters for half the price of one of these?

Amazing how gamers just, forget shit and lower their standards to almost 0.

No wonder publishers run rings around them.

I'm still pissed they didn't include Homeworld: Cataclysm in that remaster! 😋

But yeah, I 'member.

And yes, it is very amazing how we forget *sigh*. Just look at this gem:

Remasters use to be really good value popping up on Steam. Now it's just turning into them trying to ride you like a Donkey EEE-AHHH EEE-AHHH.

The worst example was GTA """""Definitive""""" collection.

Not only was it shitty. Overpriced. And broken. (with them aware it was broken), being lazy and using AI to actually misspell shit.

They de-listed the originals and attacked modders with legal threats who had been supporting them for years.

Rockstar can do die in a ditch.

@uninspiredcup: Does it matter that much? It's a niche series, and I doubt Nintendo fans care much about Etrian Odyssey as they do say, Square Enix's HD-2D games.

The point is: $80 for a trilogy of HD re-releases, after the big three decided $70 for their NEW games is frickin ridiculous.

Three fully redone games in one package for 80 isn't too bad considering its 120 individually. Hell, Games like the Atelier franchise regularly have bundled deals of 180 or more...

@mrbojangles25: I'm not paying more than £40 for 95% of games out there. Most of the time I'll get them on sale. So I guess in a way I vote with my wallet.

6th gen was amazing. £30 for new games. I got SO many games day one back then. Even with the 7th gen when they were £40. I just can't bring myself to spend more than £45 on a game.

The only games I might spend full price on, is Ace Combat, Batman Arkham and maybe Forza Motorsport or Forza Horizon off the top of my head.

The worst are the people who defended it. "yeah it's only $70". "ONLY". :-(

Buying day 1 is literally the worst deal in the entire industry.... Why anyone would throw that kind of money at a game that will be half price in a few months is crazy. Look at the last of us pc... It's a total mess but there's still mouth breathers out there taking a hammer to the face buying it. It'd be laughable if not so sad.

They normalize shitty practices in a loop. Reponses like this help them.

The only thing that stopped them is a consumer threshold. If the consumers on mass simply say "no, get fucked", it stops.

They are sharks with no limits and unfortunately, the gamer consumer is scientifically proven stupid as ****.

Nah it was always Nintendo, Rare, and Activision. While Sony was selling games at $40, Nintendo went to $80 already.

Killer Instinct Gold – $79.99 (Source: GamePro #101)

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter – $79.99 (Source: GamePro #103)

Star Fox 64 – $79.95 (Source: GamePro #106)

Multi Racing Championship – $79.95 (Source: GamePro #108)

Star Fox 64 came with the Rumble Pak.

All that aside though, those were one offs. Sony made it standard. :-(

@mrbojangles25: yes, but it's not a bad price at all. Look at metroid prime remastered, which cost $40. I bought it day one and that's just one game. This is a 3 game remastered bundle for $80

Even worst is Sony scamming people with the tlou remaster. They remastered it 5 times and each time at full price, those shameless bastards.

Yeah I mean it's not egregious, and frankly I've been playing games a long time...when I was 10 (29 years ago...god damn I feel old) games were 49.99. That's a lot more than 59.99 (or 69.99) in today's dollars. I've seen the cost of 20oz coke double and then double again but games have been mostly consistent...if anything, they've become cheaper on average (thanks, indie game developers!)

Still, as consumers, it's our duty to complain when prices go up. If they need to go up, they'll go up...if they don't, well, they won't hopefully.

@HalcyonScarlet: In my country $100 games started back in the 90's as I was buying Sega Megadrive games for $99.95, but physical games have started to get a bit cheaper ($89) while digital are going up ($109) digital is the biggest rort in gaming today, but people just can't see it.

Often wonder if it's just regional differences, or if a lot of people here just have short memories.

The whole standardized "full game" price didn't really become a thing until gen 6, at 50 bucks.

In the 80s and 90s, companies set prices all over the place. RPGs were often on the extra pricey side, reasoned that they were typically much longer than most other games. Phantasy Star 4 was more of an outlier for sure at 100 bucks, but that was the standard price for it in the US. But games going for 60, 70, 80 bucks back then, wasn't unheard of at all.

@Archangel3371:

Yup. I don't think SF2 got that pricey here, but at least in the 60 to 70 range. CT was 80, I remember my broke (at the time) older bro buying it for me, what a guy.

Guessing a lot of peeps probably don't remember the prices because their parents were buying the games lol. I mean, mine too most of the time, but they definitely let me hear about how god damn expensive these games are. 😂

I don't know anything about this series...

The Crash and Spyro trilogies which were built from the ground up for modern hardware and sold for $40... (by Activision a true miracle) , that's the bar I will use to judge remasters/remakes. And they pretty much all suck in comparison

This isn't an $80 game. It's a bundle of three remastered games that are now out of print.

I spent more in total buying these games on the DS, so...eh, the price isn't vastly ridiculous. I'll wait a few months for a 50% off sale.

@my_user_name: Sure, but nobody would buy the Crash or Spyro collections at a higher price.

Etrian Odyssey is near the top of a very niche market. I can totally see people paying this price to play this trilogy, since it's difficult to find better JRPG dungeon crawlers made in the last 10 years.

I heard these games were good dungeon crawler RPGs. Never played them on the 3DS.

I'll get this collection physical for switch $40 or under within 6 months of it releasing. Why anyone would by the old games on launch I don't get it. So much other stuff to play. SMT3 switch remaster I got physical for $20 about six months after it released. SMT4 $27 in less then 6 months.

All the weebs will get milked for this 3DS bundle for the first 2 months.

Then it'll be $30 lmao

Etrian Odyssey is a trilogy, not a single game.
