Poll Whats your most favourite Hack and Slash games? (POLL) (51 votes)
Ummm voted god of War series, particularly for older series.
Well?

My vote goes to Metal Gear Rising : Revengeance because it was a pleasant surprise with fluid gameplay and a really great soundtrack.
Why Konami didn't make a sequel? It got nothing to do with Kojima leaving Konami right? Its a game by Platinum games.
Voted other, as I'm not particularly fond of hack and slash games, or any of the games you listed. I love Castlevania, but I guess you mean the 3D hack and slash ones, and those are terrible. Ninja Gaiden's good, but I've played very little of it.
Can ARPGS such as Diablo, Titan Quest, Grim Dawn be called hack and slash?

Umm those falls under arpg's lol.

And hack and slash, Google thinks. I think it might have to do with all the hacking and slashing you do in those games.

The arpg's do fall under Hack n Slash even Souls games, but i wanted to do action adventure hack n slash only if you go by my list :)
Easily Ninja Gaiden - if we're gonna pretend NG3 on 360/PS3/WiiU never happenned.
Loved the series since the OG trilogy on NES (yea and even actually beat them back then).
@magnum3000
Why would you put Dante's Inferno and Lollipop Chainsaw in there? One is just a GOW clone/rip-off and the other one has many things, but good gameplay is not one of them.

Kojima did have little involvement with the game awhile back when he showed off the original concept before heading to Platinum Games.
Anyway, I will vote Metal Gear Rising because I played that game so many times on PC, it was indeed a good spin-off game which is hard to pull of these days. My second vote would have been Lollipop Chainsaw.

I thought Lollipop Chainsaw and Dantes Inferno ( it also came out on PSP) are very popular lol

Raiden is such a underrated character. Two super hit games ( MGS 2 and Revengeance ) yet people hardly talks about him lol.
I loved God of War 1-3 and even liked Ascension but I've shifted more towards Devil May Cry in recent years. 3 and 5 are at the top of the genre for me. I even liked the reboot. 4 was alright.
I also love me some Ninja Gaiden but it only has 2 good entries. Metal Gear Rising has some incredible boss fights so it deserves a mention as well.
Bayonetta 1 and 2 were enjoyable but are too .... hectic for my liking. Don't really allow you to wail on regular enemies often enough - there are too many interruptions.

That smiley face feels passive aggresive. :P
Then.. is Prince of Persia: Sands of Time a hack and slash?

Why the smiley face feels passive aggressive? I'm not going to eat you or anyone in this forum :P
Thought about including POP or AC , but they fall under action adventure puzzle platform.
Ninja gaiden 1 and 2 are 2 of my favorite hack n slash of all time
Glad dantes inferno is on here, love that game
New GOW doesnt even feel like a hack n slash game any more
Glad to put Dantes Inferno on the list, as recently i replayed it again on my Xbox 360. Really challenging game compared to older God of War's and maxing out all the relics , abilities (Holy/Unholy) took atleast a 2nd or 3rd playthrough for replyability.

I've always wanted to try that game. It never came to PC, sadly.

You can play the PSP version on your PC if you are daring to go for PSP emaluator.
Ninja Gaiden gets my vote with Bayonetta and Devil May Cry following closely behind. Also enjoyed Dante’s Inferno.
From that list, NG is the best, but if the new GoW is in the same category, then i'd take that over NG any day. GoW is one of the reason why Nintendo ain't got shit on Sony exclusives 😁😁😁
Used to be NG > Bayo > DMC > TW101
It's pretty much leveled out now, appreciate all of them about equally.
Played NG the most for sure though. Over 1k hrs on NGB, probably a couple of hundred on NG2.
Oh, genre names. Yeah it's dumb. These games are just the 3d evolution of beat em ups. We should just call them 3d beat em ups.
DMC devs tried to coin the term stylish action, you'll hear it sometimes, but never fully cemented tho. Lots of people say character action, which is dumb, but probably the most common name currently.
Yeah, hack n slash isn't really what genre fans call these games, regardless of what Google tells you lol. It's what people who aren't into these games call them. But hack n slash usually refers to your more button mashy games, and a lot of those isometric action joints.
@ConanTheStoner: Just call it "Action/Adventure" game and be done with it.
Yeah, you could. Such a broad term though. Get lumped under the same umbrella as Zelda, Uncharted, Assassins Creed, etc.?
Nah, having sub-genre names makes sense. They're all clearly action games, sure, but that doesn't describe much. Marios an action game, but we call it platformer. Dooms an action game but we call it a FPS. Street Fighter, action, but we call it a fighting game.
It's just that this genre in particular never settled on a name for whatever reason.
How can you have a poll for best "hack and slash" without including any of the Diablo games? My favorite is Diablo III.
I will include it under action rpg hack and slash. These are action adventure hack n slash only poll.
@magnum3000: Wet was awesome. It was exactly the type of game that needed a sequel too. Style and core mechanics were solid, but animations were stiff and boss fights were just QTEs. A sequel that polished things up could have pushed the series from good to great.
Anyway, Bayonetta gets my vote.

HaHa yeah. It was very underrated lol. Even the car chases were full of QTE. Platforming was fun , felt like Mrs Payne with a katana :P

Distinction without a difference.
For me, Hands down Bayonetta ... it says a lot when i have troubles going back to other games because they feel awful compared to Bayonetta's perfect gameplay, although DMC5 came pretty close.

Always through up a little when i read that term.
Hack n slash is one of those genres that's incredibly hard to define, but from that list, definitely Bayonetta.

Can I ask why would you find it "Incredibly hard to define"? Not trying to be a smart-ass here, just curios.

So, for me, my first "hack n slash" game was Lunar Knights on the DS (a weird obscure Kojima game about hunting anime vampires). I call it hack n slash because... well, one of the characters used a bunch of melee weapons, including a sword (other one used guns). I've since played quite a few games in the "hack n slash" genre (like the first few DMC games), and have come to understand that Lunar Knights is more of an ARPG than a hack n slash.
It's splitting hairs, 100%, kind of like when people parse out the phrase "role playing game." When someone says RPG, most people have at least an inkling of what that means, but yes, TECHNICALLY you pay a role in every video game ever made, so RPG can be hard to define.
Same with hack n slash. I've also heard series like Bayonetta and DMC referred to as "spectacle fighters" and even "beat em ups," and to me they definitely fit into those categories as well as hack n slash. Hell, I've heard people call Dark Souls a hack n slash.
Then there's something like Darksiders, which blends a whole host of elements from different genres. The combat is undeniably similar to Bayo, DMC, and God of War, but the structure is really more like a Zelda game for a few of the titles.
Point being, the phrase hack n slash can be a tough one to pin down.
@turtlethetaffer: Oh I see, you meant for "unseasoned" gamer, right?
Though I played thousands of games spreading across multiple genres (and platforms) in past 30 years, I definitely don't see myself as an "expert" at a single one, though I have no problems/can really dissect the only genre I play the most frequently and for a long time (in my case I'd say racing games).
All I can say is that the more you play various genres and are open minded about another ones instead of just sticking to one, the more you can get grasp of what is what, but it's indeed really tricky to explain.
About the games such as Darksiders (can only speak for 1+2, didn't get to play the new entries yet), they are mostly labeled as "action adventures". Just because it has the general gameplay from Ocarina of Time, which is "action adventure" and only deviates from it with its DMC/God of War style combat, it's still what it is - an action adventure.
Additionally beat-em ups. They are beat-em ups. 3D versions of them, hack n slash doesn't really fit when some of the more prominent entries in the franchise the main weapon isn't even a sword: Bayonetta, The Wonderful 101, Viewtiful Joe, God hand. To name a few.
Just straight up Action games works as well.
