Hello, what's the best 2D game you've played this year? Shit like Megman 11 or old ass games are fine. This thread isn't dictated by Nazis trying to hold you down.
I'd go with Rayman: Forever which I picked up on GOG for almost nothing, it's impressive for it's age, and it's colourful cartoon happy land belies a soul crushingly aggressive die, die die game.
Sonic Mania Plus, a.k.a the GOTG. I already loved 2017's Mania, but the addition of Mighty and Ray, Encore Mode, and the SEGA Genesis packaging made it even better. Aside from Sonic, I also really enjoyed playing Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, Castlevania: Requiem, Mega Man 11, and despite the input lag for the first three games, the MMX Legacy Collections.
Next year should be pretty good too with Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, Gunvolt Chronicles, Freedom Planet 2, and possibly Streets of Rage 4 coming out.
Probably Dead Cells, but Celeste, Owlboy and Bloodstained Curse of the Moon were also fantastic. Hollow Knight, Guacamelee 2 and Monster Boy are probably up there, but ihave yet to play them
can i say octopath traveller? it's technically 3D but still 2D if you think about it.
ok it's 3D.
i didnt really play any 2D games this year now that i think about it (well i have been playing Dawn of war 2 which is 2D mechanically if not graphically but not a 2018 game). nothing against 2D games or anything. i have plenty on my wishlist. just it didnt happen in 2018 so i think octopath traveller is as close as it gets for me.
i did play some hollow knight and i liked what i played but i didnt really play it enough to make any sort of call. also thats technically a 2017 game.
I got Hollow Knight a few weeks ago in the recent descount that it got on the Switch (5 bucks) and i feel i robbed the developers, the game is insane and for that price... holy cow. Easily not only my favorite 2D game, but one of my all time favorites as of now.
I've been hearing some amazing things for The Messenger, got it on Switch. Apparently some old school Ninja Gaiden-ish gameplay and there is a story too.
I just realised I failed to read the title correctly.
My 2d game of the year would be Into the Breach.
@enzyme36: I just looked up that Switch port of Flashback and it's not too great. The gun sound continually doesn't trigger and sounds weak. The music sounds like an adlib card and is way worse than on Genesis. Then they have just applied that diagonal-pixel-filling-in-filter as if that looks good.
All these games have the best ports already via emulation and only a 1mb download for $0... Apparently. I would never do that though because it is wrong to not give people money, who want money, for a 26 year old game. 30 bucks.
My surprise find in the Mega Drive library is Shinobe 3. I played it for the first time last month and found it has very good gameplay if too easy until you get to the big disgusting boss, then too hard. Then too easy again, then waiting for the horse and hoverboard levels to end. But that is what I call gameplay. Every game should have a fly kick down and right move that bounces you back a bit.
[EDIT] Turns out the video I watched had out of sync audio, but the gun is still a bit less punchy than the original.
I want to see Fade to Black 2. I have thought a bit about what a new version of this game would look like. I would make it basically like Headhunter but using the setting from the original which is future dystopian Earth.
Headhunter - Dreamcast (2001)
[EDIT] It turn's out Fade to Black is headed for the Dreamcast for a retail release! :O

[EDIT] All the inaccuracies I stated about the Flashback Anniversary Edition I now know are wrong as I have watched this review. "I'd steer well clear of the collector's edition."
@Alucard_Prime: the messenger is the only game I played this year where I wished I could go back and do it all over for the first time again... Enjoy your run.
The first hour is all about understanding the flexibility you have with your abilities and then it's like your shit out of a Canon, bouncing, hopping and slicing like a real ninja....

It was actually you who convinced me to buy it.
Still not booted it up yet though. Playing Guacamelee! at the moment, that while beautiful looking, isn't terribly engaging on the gameplay side. Gotta have at least a smidgen of challenge.
I would say Mega Man 11 slightly edged out Curse of the Moon for my favorite 2d game released this year.
Although it was not released this year, I played Mega Man Unlimited for the first time this year and it was absolutely amazing, easily one of the best Mega Man games ever made.
Other great 2d games I played for the first time this year:
