Hello friends,

In this thread we discuss and vote what is the best tacticool shooter we played and vote. theres not many tactical shooters released in history and majority of them are action shooters that also disguised as tactical shooter. plus im not much high on tactical shooters compare to old school fast paced shooters like Half life, Doom and Quake.

Heres the best one i played are

  • Rainbow six Raven shield
  • Brothers in Arms Road to hill 30
  • Ghost recon advanced warfighter the PC version. console versions were action third person shooters.
  • Ghost recon 1

I also tried SWAT 4 but it was more of arrest simulator that tactical shooter.

I don't know if this counts, but Escape From Tarkov is superior and more realistic to everything on that list.

I'm still playing Rising Storm 2. It's just really good. It demands some learning and deep understanding from the players. But I just don't get how that's fine in a singleplayer game like Dark Souls, but multiplayer games all need to be casual as hell.

omg its tactical. its hard as hell and if you go in just shooting like a arcade shooter your going to die in seconds. I think you are saying this because is more tps than a fps.

calling it gear of war is just plain dumb. they don't feel close the same. just because you take cover which is realistic were fps you stand in the open to get shot. doesn't mean its gears.

omg he taking cover yuck thats not realistic. your suppose to just crouch just like 90% of fps do.

or omg its not tactical they are taking cover.

I’m going to go with Ghost Recon simply because that’s the only one I’ve ever fully played. Tried a bit of a Rainbow Six game, I think it was New Vegas. Tactical shooters though just really aren’t my thing.

Its dumbed down tactical shooter. especially compare to older rainbow six.

many people who never played actual tactical shooter consider vegas as tactical. its not tactical.

taking wall cover and having regen health is as tactical as throw a brick at window.

so they added a few more gameplay elements. health regen is just keeping up with the modern gameplay.

@ghosts4ever: rainbow six Vegas 1 and 2 were the very definition of tactical shooters. Any team that didn't communicate by mic and play as a team got their butts handed to them on a plate. Trust me....I spend hundreds of hours covering the back stairs.

Huge difference between prior Rainbow 6 games and Vegas.

For one thing, planning phase.

When Ghost implies it's been dumbed down and shifted towards targeting an action-console-crowd of younger gamers, he's 100% correct.

Ghosts any point is not to be noted as he never plays any games , but trolls others on this forum without playing any games or extremely limited games as Doom. (Makes threads watching youtube videos or reading others threads/blogs found online).Very easy to detect in a few words from any conversation with Ghosts.

As for you, you are not a troll ( You do play your games and we can have a healthy debate) and your point is valid on sake of this argument here. Rainbow Six Vegas is a tactical shooter keeping in mind then current gaming scenario. You can't go gun blazing , you have to place your team in strategic corners, make decisions/ scan your scenario or options before breaching, choose your loadouts (Equipments/Gears/Gadgets) depending upon the scenario.

@magnum3000: My freind, you give me undue respect, very much low hanging fruit. Ghost is widely considered our gaming leader.

But ye, if people enjoy that shit, that's their shindig. Clearly more popular than the originals by a wide margin so, if that's what bring in the coin and what people on mass want, fuckall can do about it, pointless complaining.

Still, take shit like Rogue Spear and GRAW PC over Vegas any-day.

GRAW PC is an interesting game. It was developed separate from the console version with a specific PC audience in mind. Probably the best Ghost Recon game, although, up there with Quake 1/2 for "most brownest game" award.

I always want to have a healthy gaming debate with ghosts , but you know its like banging your head against a brick wall or talking to a brick wall. Ghosts himself ruined his image in this forum , now even if he makes a good point its becomes pointless to carry a conversation with him as he never acknowledges anyones point of view but rather argues about it.Its always about him and his opinions, ours dosen't matter :P

See i can be wrong even, its not that i have best gaming opinion. But its great to hear a valid point from a fellow gamer with a level head.

And for your argument of course older GR games were great, they started it all. I was never comparing Vegas against them , i was praising both games.

Voted RO2/Rising Storm.

Rising Storm especially is fantastic. first rate gameplay, atmosphere and map design. RO2 is great but some of the maps are too open.

Hell Let Loose has the potential to be the new favorite but it needs to tighten up the gunplay a bit, its not up to Tripwire level gunplay at this point

for Singleplayer, have to go Rainbow Six 3 (Ravenshield I think?)

@magnum3000: True, true. Glad I checked this thread, Rogue Spear had a shit ton of expansion packs missed out on back in ye old times.

Urban Operations

Rogue Spear Mission Pack: Urban Operations, released on April 4, 2000, was the first expansion for Rogue Spear. It was developed and published by Red Storm Entertainment. It added eight new maps and five classic Rainbow Six maps from the original game, as well as three new weapons. With the release of Urban Operations, a built-in mod system was added to manage user-made "mods" or modifications.

Urban Operations was re-released by KAMA Digital Entertainment in South Korea - this new edition included two exclusive missions and two new weapons.

Covert Ops Essentials

Rainbow Six: Covert Ops is a stand-alone expansion pack of Rogue Spear. The training simulator was developed by Magic Lantern Playware, six of the levels were done by Zombie Studios and three of the levels were done by Red Storm Entertainment. It was published by Red Storm Entertainment. It was released on September 28, 2000. It included nine new missions, because the product was primarily developed as an educational program on real life counter-terrorism history and tactics.

The training simulator developed by Magic Lantern Playware was actually a Computer Based Training program. "Recruits" would create a profile, and then read educational materials such as actual military Field Manuals, view video interviews from anti-terrorist experts, take multiple-choice tests to progress in rank, and see live-fire demonstrations of the weapons included in the game. For the live-fire videos, Sergeant Anthony Levatino (now Deputy Chief) from the Santa Ana, California Police Department was contracted to provide content expertise for the educational material and for the on-camera demonstrations. Having access to all the weapons included in the game, and being a SWAT Team Leader/Sniper and SWAT Academy instructor, Sergeant Levatino provided brief weapon introductions and live-fire demonstrations.

Black Thorn

Rogue Spear: Black Thorn was developed by Red Storm Entertainment, published by Ubisoft, and released as a stand-alone add-on on December 15, 2001, featuring new singleplayer and multiplayer maps, along with new weapons and a new multiplayer game mode. The singleplayer plot features a mentally disturbed ex-SAS operative challenging Team Rainbow with reenactments of real-life terrorist attacks, such as the Entebbe Operation and the Japanese embassy hostage crisis.

I started Rainbow six with raven shield then disappointed by vegas.

rouge spear looks too dated because guns are not visible.

I enjoyed Rouge Spear a lot back in the day and missed out lot of its expansion content.

You check check out for yourself i do play Tactical shooters and 've atleast some idea about them particulary R6V series before speaking even if its not great as yours lol. Infact there is no harm in learning something new from someone in this forum than pissing them off with baseless arguments.

GRAW PC version was tactical compare to console version.

This was real GRAW game. 360 version was third person cover shooter.

As a person who played both version, GRAW (Xbox 360 ) was way ahead of its time and was a awesome tactical shooter for consoles back in the day.It was Third Person Tactical.

As for PC Version , it was heavy on graphics and in first person.Only difference was PC version was very challenging (Enemy placements were changed , and dealt more damage to player/team) compared to console. That dosen't make console version any inferior in terms of gameplay. Both were enjoyable tactical shooters back in the day.

The best tactical shooters aren't on that list Having played most everything on the entire list I can say that SOCOM in general is the best Tactical shooter franchise of all time. S1, S2, S3, and Confrontation are amazing games that are unrivaled by anything else.

As a log time fan of the genre from the beginning ....

Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis and Hidden & Dangerous 2 are my favorites.

other good stuff....

Ghost Recon 1 (Heroes Unleashed mod)

Rainbow 6: Rogue Spear/Raven Shield (Supply Drops mod)

SWAT 3 & 4 (Last Resort mod for 3....Elite Force for 4)

Vietcong

Sucks that the genre is dead these days and you only get mp shitfests/non games.

The genre is dead when rainbow six vegas released and now we have Ghost recon games that are open world just cause clones. Vietcong was good too. it was kinda realistic but i dont see it as traditional tactical shooter.

The last great SP tactical shooter was GRAW PC.

You beat my edit where I realized I should say something regarding that aspect. I was going to keep my opinion to myself since everyone has one and all that jazz, but please feel free to ask me why.

Tactical shooters are by far my favorite genre of games and I have sank more hours than anyone should.. lol. Nothing touches the camraderie, call outs, fast game play, adrenaline filled moments, and lifelong friendships built around that franchise. Completely unrivaled (once again my opinion) by any other franchise and like I already said I have played just about everything.. There is a reason they call it SOCRACK. Throw in the shit talking, taunting, dancing on dead bodies, and multiple one life game modes and I feel it is already in a category of very few games that are even in the running in the first place.

Something like R6/Rogue Spear (which was on console) can easily work on console as it's a slower paced game that's more about the planning phase, equipment and positioning than raw twitch skill.

In general, if you run in gun ho you're dead in about 2 seconds if the room has more than one enemy.

Brothers in arms is rare exception.

its basically a game design with PS2/Xbox in mind yet its still actual tactical shooter unlike other fake tacticool console games.

Yeah man, one of the biggest reasons I actually prefer playing shooters on console is the exact same reason others hate it. I love the degree of human error and feel the abilities on the sticks varies more drastically than the precision of a m/kb. That isn't to say I don't understand others feeling as though shooters are worse or not as refined on console, but it's just a different way of looking at it.

Having played shooters on both in depth I simply prefer everyone being on a similar input device and putting it all on the line with a controller. Which is a reason I haven't been a big fan of games that incorporate both controllers and m/kb in the same rooms. Sure, people on a m/kb have laser aim and can pull off some truly spectacular plays including some awesome no scopes, spinning shots, other trick shots, and insane head shots, but I just think it's more impressive when someone does a more rare similar play on a controller and it does happen. When playing down 1v3 or 1v4 in a room full of mouse users when I'm on a controller is disheartening although I have pulled it off. Now that same situation against other controller users feels like things sway in my favor a little more often.. lol. I'm the first to admit that m/kb is better as far as precision and speed. That's why I like to keep things a notch lower (think wooden bats in MLB as opposed to aluminum bats in NCAA) since I feel it adds to human error, fun factor, competitiveness, and unbelievable comebacks. In shooters I live for those moments. I also feel that people are more camp heavy when they know each and every one of their opponents can shoot a tick off their nose from 100 yards away in a fraction of a second.

Let's just say that while moving between cover I have a 50% chance while the other side is using controllers to make it to a position that gives me an advantage and a 10% chance to make it to the same position if they are using m/kb. As far as precision and ttk nothing beats a m/kb, but I would rather have that element of human error whether it works in my favor or not. To me it keeps things fresh and adds a higher level of competitiveness even if others would argue in direct retrospect. I do see both sides of the argument, but as they say, to each their own.

Brothers In Arms tactical aspect is incredibly shallow compared to something like Rogue Spear.

It's not a bad game, it balances up the shooty bang bang aspect with the light-tactical elements very well, probably Gearbox's best game alongside Opposing Force.

But it's most definitely nowhere near the depth of Rogue Spear, which is akin to feeling like a real-time Xcom.

I really like the original Ghost Recon so that's my vote, I also remember a character that was always in my team; Nigel Tunney.

Yea, played this back in the day as well, completely free from what I recall. Amercano propaganda, but a good game, so who cares really.

One of the cool features in R6/Rogue Spear was the ability to run through the planning phase in watch mode. The AI was wonky, especially with suicidal grenades, but it was a neat feature and helped you see first hand the planning operation in action.
