What's the best free to play game right now?

I'm going with Apex Legends, they did a great job with the game from the very beginning. And the fact it's lasted for years now shows it's a pretty good game. It's competitive, it's fun, and it doesn't have crazy money schemes (as I don't care about cosmetics for the most part). What about you, SW? What's the best free to play game right now?

No such thing. They're lacking or severly lacking something crucial. Playing a f2p game is accepting shittier gaming. Btw this includes PoE. The game with incredibly overpriced fashion and unless you want to look like a basic bitch, you have no choice but to spend a shitload on their mtx store.

Who even plays this game? Nobody. Nobody plays this game.

The default answer would typically be TF2, but looks like bots ruined it.

Fortnite is still the best free game.

Mario 35 and Tetris 99 are good free games if you got switch online too loved those 2 bring back mario 35 imo permanently

It has been a while since I have played it, but I was a big fan of Warframe. I am interested in jumping into the game to see what kind of changes have been made over the last couple of years.

Quake Champions is pretty awesome. The hero-shooter aspects are fine, and it still plays like old school Quake.

@judaspete: I love quake champions, even though the fan base shits on it non stop.

Alot of people don't like to admit it either, but Team Fortress 2 is through and through a casual shooter.

Not saying that in a "i'm a racist League Of Legends/Cod player" derogatory manner. But it is designed as a pick up and play game where even if you can't shoot straight to save-yourself, can still actively contribute.

So in that regard, less bitchy about it. As always treated it as such.

Apex Legends for me aswel

Fortnite non build is great I was asking for a non build for years.

Path of exile, Fortnite for shooters.

I have been tempted to give World of Tanks and/or War Thunder a try, not sure which of the two to go with.

Apex Legends or Rocket League, easily. Both are revolutionary in their genres and proved there is a place for F2P.

Not a big fan of F2P for a few reasons, but mostly because it uses two practices I don't like seeing in gaming in general: microtransactions, and games-as-a-service.

With that said, there are some OK ones out there that offer a complete package and don't penalize people for not paying or overly reward people that do.

I think Warframe might be one of the exceptions. It's a complete game.

Tried it when the PS4 came out. Hated every single second of it. The aesthetic of this game is simply disgusting. You pick up an armor, look at it, and its hard to tell wtf you're even looking at. Also, the generic/randomly generated looking environment with a floaty combat system is everything i dislike in games.

PoE is the best f2p game, but as i have mentioned above, fashion being gated behind mtx is a crime. I've also heard that your inventory is a mess unless you spend money, but this might be an ESO issue (or both).

Astro Bot, Rec Room VR, Fortnite

I don't play a lot of F2P games, but I really dig Genshin Impact, Paladins, and Rogue Company. Warframe was pretty cool too when I played it.

@hardwenzen: Cosmetics being locked behind microtransactions is the bread and butter of F2P games, as it should. They need to make money from something that doesn't have any effect on the gameplay. It's perfectly understandable. You're right about the stash though.

Probably Counter Strike: GO.

And that is why i will always ignore f2p titles. You'd have hundred(s) of armor sets for free in a $60 title like that, but instead, you have to pay a lot of per set, and if you were to get them all, you'd be in thousdands of dollars wasted. Will never support a game like that.

F.E.A.R. combat old but gold no microtransactions or weapon unlocks needed.

So nostalgic it's pretty awesome that people been playing this since 2005.

@sargentd: Yeah I don't get the hate for Quake Campions. Maybe it was a mess early on and people wrote it off before they could improve it? I was late to the party and missed all that.

Apex legends is incredible tbh. But if ur impulsive u might buy the all hero pack. Heroes easily unlocked by those coins cause its useless for everything else.

Dota2 also pretty great. Used to play the frozen throne dota so I never get the skin microtransaction hype in dota 2, its all about how u play the character.

I am deleting the same kids in ER on daily basis. I have no time downgrading to an inferior game.

Well, if TF2 has truly faceplanted, then my answer would be Rocket League.

For me, the game just felt bad, like sluggish. And the characters now being heroes with abilities and different stats.. Bleh. Quake III felt better, was more fun and more balanced. Played Champions for around 50 hours, but ultimately disregarded it as unnecessary. Even enjoyed the fucking MP of DOOM (2016) more than Champions.

Like Litchie said, they needlessly threw off the balance with assymetric elements, i.e. loadouts, specials and microtransactions. The only reason I can think of for its existence was that Zenimax were having trouble effectively monetising Quake Live, which had already been pretty much honed to perfection as far as arena FPS goes. A simple graphics update would have been plenty for the Q3 fanbase. Screwing with much loved, decades-old maps was kind of the last straw for a lot of the community I reckon.

Can't blame them for trying but they really threw out the baby with the bathwater on that one.

Dota and halo infinite for sure are top of the list.

Age of empires online was alright. It had a really cool tower defense mode, which I sunk way more hours into than any other AOE mode.

Probably the only one who liked it though, everyone hated the artstyle.

Team Fortress 2 and Quake Champions, personally. TF2 would be the better of the two but these games are at least interesting enough to play for quite a bit compared to a lot of the others mentioned already.
