This has been a remarkable year for handheld gaming, with every month getting a steady flow of some incredible, incredible handheld game releases. And even though there are still some major handheld game releases left (Bravely Default, Ace Attorey: Dual Destinies, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Tearaway), on the whole, I think the rather expansive list below should be enough for most people to make a decision regarding handheld GotY.

So what game will be the handheld game of the year? Just a reminder of some of the highlights (please let me know if I forgot something):

  • Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan (3DS)
  • Fire Emblem Awakening (3DS)
  • Soul Sacrifice (PSV)
  • Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon (3DS)
  • Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (3DS)
  • Guacamelee! (PSV)
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns (3DS)
  • Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers (3DS)
  • Project X Zone (3DS)
  • Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS)
  • Dragon's Crown (PSV)
  • Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS)
  • Mario and Luigi: Dream Team (3DS)
  • Killzone: Mercenaries (PSV)
  • Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millenium Girl (3DS)
  • Pokemon X/Y (3DS)

What, according to you, is the handheld game of the year?

Either:

Pokemon X and Y

Zelda A Link Between Worlds (successor to a classic)

Fire Emblem Awakening (best Fire Emblem yet)

Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon

or Animal Crossing New Leaf

Would Guacamelee be on the list? Never mind, I see it now.

Don't know if you want to include other ports like Hotline Miami, Spelunky, etc. Your choice.

1) Shin Megami Tensei IV

2) Killzone Mercs Beta

3) Pokemon X and Y

4) Guacamelee

5) Fire Emblem Awakening

6) (Because I included a beta) Soul Sacrifice

@Blabadon:

The reason Guacamelee was included, but those others weren't, is because Guacamelee, like, say Monster Hunter, was a day and date release across all platforms. Hotline Miami, Spelunky etc. were not.

I haven't played it yet but I'm going to say Guacamelee will take it here. Fire Emblem is a strong contender, but my personal one is Pokémon Y.

Also, look at all the Pokémon avatars! Woot Woot!

Strange really, Guacamelee is way overpraised for the glaring flaws it has.

It scored well here, that's all I have to go on. I know score isn't the only factor but it seems they loved it.

Can't wait for it to be available over PS+.

Really?

1.Elite Sony first party developer

2.New IP

3.Fully utilizes Vita

4.Unique

The games you mentioned have been done over and over before, not saying that they are bad, but we've played Zelda and Pokemon before.

He added Guacamelee! because he wanted the Vita to have a game on their side. He didn't want the sides to look unfair with mostly 3DS games.

Lets be honest, Killzone and Soul Sacrifice weren't that good. The fact they're on that list, next to Pokemon/ Fire Emblem/ Zelda/ Luigi's Mansion really shows how bad 2013 was for the PS Vita and shows how much Sony's first party cares about their handheld.

Wish I could vote for Persona 4 Golden. But I'll go with Fire Emblem for this year, although Tearaway might change that.

If he added Guacamelee on the Vita side, why not add Mighty Switch Force 2, SteamWorld Dig, Gunman Clive, Attack of the Friday Monsters, and HarmoKnight on the 3DS side? Those are way better than Guacamelee...

3. Pokemon Y (subject to change. at 4th gym)

Honestly, my favorite is Pokemon. The 3DS is doing awesome though. Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei IV are all just...outstanding. Not to mention A Link Between Worlds just looks delicious.

I feel like I would have enjoyed it much more at a lower price. Not to say it wasn't full of content, but at the insanely cheap prices I buy most games at these days, it didn't live up to the $12 tag.

Still, fun as hell sometimes.

"Just a reminder of some of the highlights (please let me know if I forgot something)" was in the OP. Not to mention off the top of someone's head, it's much easier to remember a title that scored AAA this year especially on SW.

Posts like these are why I post on SW less every day. Not even sure why I'm responding tbh.

Fire Emblem. It pretty much got me into buy a 3DS. Persona 4 Golden should win if it was an original game and not a remake. The original Persona 4 kicks most modern games in the teeth. However, a remake shouldn't deserve too much credit in the face of genuinely new successful games.

All I've gotten is SMT4, New Super Mario Bros. 2, and Pokemon X. Haven't even played SMT4 yet, pokemon has sucked up all my time. New Super Mario Bros. 2 is pretty mediocre.

Persona 4 Golden.

Although a lot of you would get all technical on me and say that the game was 2012 (for Japan and NA). I Retort by saying it was freakin' LATE 2012 and Europe got it this year so I'm sticking with my answer.

I never got the appeal of animal crossing. I tried the one on the gamecube and the one on ds and they were both incredibly boring. My brother bought the one for the wii and I didn't even try and play it.

It will be either Zelda Link Between Worlds, Pokemon XY or Fire Emblem. It's hard to say considering I've yet to play Zelda, but I would guess Pokemon comes out on top. I have Y version and it's a great game.

I'm hoping it's A Link Between Worlds, but right now I'm leaning towards either Shin Megami Tensei IV or Fire Emblem: Awakening.
