@ShepardCommandr: Yes, I remember this as well! Not fond of those times.
I got F.E.A.R. back in 2006 and was dismayed to find out it ran very poorly (I knew nothing about computers then). I check my computer specs and actually find out that a Celeron D processor and the onboard graphics card were very, very poor for performance. I only had a lawnmowing job for a few of my neighbors back then so I spent 2006 and 2007 to save up for the 7700 GS (which wasn't enough, of course), a Pentium 4 CPU (which helped, but also wasn't enough), and then finally the 8800 GTS. When I finally got that card, I had gotten the PS3 (in 2009) and I didn't care that much to play F.E.A.R. with MGS4 and GTA4 on the console.
I spent all that time and money (couldn't upgrade to the Core 2 Duo like you, I don't think my motherboard could support it) and when I finally got the card that could run F.E.A.R. at the highest graphics and settings I wanted in 2006, I already had many other games demanding my attention.
Now I'm also still the same loser I was back then. History repeats itself. I work a couple of crappy jobs but a few months ago I bought a nice gaming computer with the i7 6700 and I recently bought a new SSD and the Nvidia 1080 GTX. I need to get a grip and focus on more important matters, but DOOM just looks so goddamn beautiful.
I also still play F.E.A.R. from time to time too.
Sorry, long rant. I totally empathize with you and was in a reflective mood.
