Here are my top 5. To make it more dramatic I've added spoiler censors!

5. Wii U Controller - battery life was horrible, but the controller itself was a cool idea. The fact that you can play with two screens at most was helpful especially for inventory management and using maps.

4. Xbox 360 Controller - The PS3 controller was pretty much lackluster. I liked the form factor of the 360 controller more. It was good for shooters and racing games.

3. PS4 Controller - definitely much better than the PS3 controller. Better handle and better trigger. The light bar was interesting, but didn't really do much. The speaker idea was cool, but wasn't used to its potential.

2. Xbox One Controller - Not a whole lot different than the 360 controller, but the trigger upgrade was innovative in my opinion. So much that Sony is pretty much copying it for the PS5. The only reason why this controller is not number 1 for me, is that I feel like it's still just geared towards shooters and racing games. Microsoft should work to make it better for all genres.

1. Switch Pro Controller - The battery life is phenomenal. I could never remember how often I recharge the controller because each charge lasts so long. Its predecessor, the Wii U Pro Controller, was a good start, but this one feels and handles better. I even like using this controller for Smash Bros.

There you have it folks!! My top 5.. how about yours?

My Steam controller is my new favorite. The others are fine, but for gaming on a PC the only one I'd suggest, unless you need a good d-pad, is the Steam controller.

Still use 360 controller on PC. So good with it that I rival K&M people. PS3 controller was the worst but had a good battery life unlike PS4.

The Xbox One controllers would definitely be at the top of my list followed by the Switch Pro Controller.

@davillain-: I want my Elite back. Attempting to fix my bumpers and reassemble the controller was just a nightmare lol. I'll either take it to get fixed, or just buy a 2nd series Elite.

1. PS4 controller

2. PS3 controller

3. PS2 controller(production of PS2 stopped in 2012 so it counts bro.

4. Xbox360 controller

5. Xbone controller

Sony nailed the comfortable controller on their first try. It’s why they barely updated it from PS1-PS3. No one had any complaints. They decided to improve on their basic design with the PS4 controller.

Symmetrical sticks makes a lot more sense and feels better.

Asymmetrical sticks like the Xbox controllers are wrong and you have to break your left thumb to play games. It’s frustrating. Plus their d-pads suck which makes tons of games unplayable.

Couldn't agree more - why, I've broken my thumb so many times every time I touch the thing, as have the 100 million plus who have suffered with asymmetrical sticks.

Anyway, as for me:

  1. XB1 controller (neck & neck with the Switch Pro controller for comfort, but the XB1 controller has better triggers)
  2. Switch Pro controller
  3. Xbox 360 controller

That's about it really. Never been a fan of the PS controllers, especially pre-DS4. They were so uncomfortable & felt cheap. The DS4 is definitely an improvement ergonomically, but still way behind the XB1 & Switch Pro controllers imo.

I find the PS controllers to be way more ergonomic. It is also easier to use two fingers on the shoulders and access face buttons with your index fingers.

Xbox 360 and xbox one, 8 bit duo for retro

Ps4 controllers are cheap garbage, ive gone through 3 now, each one has something wrong, on 2 of them the right trigger has at least 1 broke side latch. The 3rd one I got which is the newest the down button on the dpad stopped working for no reason, it doesnt even jam or anything.

Joycons also are trash for the fact Nintendo knows there is a drift issue, my left one got the drift

Its still the xbox 360. I find the bumpers on the X1 to be sort of odd and physically unresponsive, but besides that the controller is the same.

The 8BitDo SNES SN30 Pro is easily the best gamepad I've used in well over a decade (essentially it's a Switch Pro controller compatible on PC).

Bluetooth connection, a battery that lasts 30+ hours, USB-C connection, can boot as any firmware on PC (XBO/PS4/Switch), amazing analogue sticks and shaped like a classic SNES controller.

It's single and only drawback is all the triggers are digital input and not analogue, so no racing games with adjustable throttle input unless you use the sticks.

Seems like a great controller, but I just use my Switch Pro controller on PC. Works like a charm. Only downside would be that I have to have it wired, but since I sit beside my PC, it's not a problem.

Switch Pro is definitely the best damn controller made in long time. Too bad it costs so much.

Mine did too before I sprayed it with electronic cleaner. Now the drifting is completely gone. If you haven't tried that, I highly recommend it. Seems joycons are a bit sensitive to dirt..

Best Overall: X1 Elite Controller. It has issues but the options and ergonomics are still top class.

Best Sony: DS4. Not far behind Xbox but stick quality is its biggest weakness.

Best Nintendo: Wii U Pro Controller. Switch can eat my ass, Wii U gets overlooked for how terrible it was in every other way.

Worst Overall: Single Switch joy cons. Good for playing NES Mario, and that’s it. Also motion controls - outside of VR - can eat a dick.

Good

  1. Xbox Elite Series 2 is probably the best traditional controller available right now. Nothing else comes close to the build quality and customization. USB-C!
  2. 8bitdo SN30 Pro+ is a standard, modern controller with a good D-pad. USB-C!
  3. M30 is the best 6-button Megadrive-style controller I've used. USB-C!
  4. Anything else from 8bitdo, especially the newer stuff. You can find a retro controller for most needs.

Bad

  • DS4 - Stupid light, stupid touchpad, terrible battery life. A step forward, and then several steps back from the DS3. A wtf-design if I've ever seen one. It does have a decent D-pad tho.
  • Switch Joycons - are a joke by themselves. Feel awful to use single, double, on, or off the Switch.

Okay

  • Switch Pro - D-pad is shit, it does have USB-C tho.
  • X1 - Mediocre build quality. Doesn't come with rechargeable pack which leaves people to source their own from sometimes questionable choices online.
  • Stadia - It's fine. It's got Wifi which hopefully will be more useful in the future. USB-C.

Notes

  • Every controller from now on should have USB-C.
  • I've found that most average controllers these days have poor D-pads.
  • The SN30 Pro+ is what the DS4 should have been. Thanks, 8bitdo!

I don't know why the Dualshock 4 would make anyone's list. It's an awful, uncomfortable controller with useless features and a terrible battery life.

I actually like the feel of the controller, but yea, the battery life sucks, and the light bar and sound were just ok. They did improve the triggers though.

DS4, damn near perfect minus the battery life. My original controller had some issues with the left analog stick from years of Destiny and Battlefield, but it still lasted 4 years.

360 controller, good but one of the worst d pads ever.

Switch Pro, solid controller with no real downfalls from what I've used of it (its my boys system and I don't play it much).

DS3, not sure why people dont like this one, just a solid controller with an amazing battery life.

Worst controller, Switch Joy Cons. Just crap overall.

DS3, not sure why people dont like this one, just a solid controller with an amazing battery life.

DS3 is a great controller. I still use them all the time. I've got 4 ready to go at any point paired with the PC in the living room. The battery life is great and honestly I still like the mini USB better than the micro found on the DS4 and X1 controllers.

The only negative comes from it just being old, and better trends have taken over. Like analog sticks designed so your fingers don't slip off as easy, and concave triggers.
