Poll What type of gamer are you? (66 votes)

Mindless fun games 23%
Deep/story-heavy games 27%
I'll play anything 50%

Would you rather have a lighthearted, yet challenging game or something more intense, deep in narrative, maybe grimdark and what have you?

I tend to like games that don't take themselves too seriously, that are pure fun and have a compelling gameplay, but at the same time I enjoy those only in short bursts, while a game with a good narrative and world to explore may keep me glued to the TV or monitor for several hours and days.

I won’t play anything: FIFA, fighting games , turn based JRPGS or WRPGS, David Cage bullshit or tell tale types with garbage gameplay among others

But I play more than just the other two

How very, very exciting.

Coin-up style games for me, but I don't disdain a story-driven game once in a while as long as it's not too heavy in cinematics and too weak in gameplay.

Cartainly not all games but it's easier to list genres I don't enjoy than ones that I do. I don't play Fighters, Platformers or Driving games. Anime games tend to get passed over as well.

Lately? I tend to prefer games that have a real-world basis because I like to pretend it's me in the game whether it's a pilot or some nameless schmoe doing grunt work on the ground.

Anything that is fun or engaging to me I will play. I’m old school/new age so as long as I’m enjoying it I can care less what the game is defined as.

I don't know, lately I have a love-hate relationship with open world games, those can either have me completely absorbed or detached from the experience. I guess it all depends on what I can do in the game and how fun it is and how well the gameplay is executed. Narrative is a good bonus if it doesn't try too hard.

Ultimately I like games that are fun, not deep, for that I have movies and books.

Mindless fun. I’ll take a Burnout, Crackdown, Pacman, Forza Horizon, Asteroids, Titanfall, Saints Row, Mario Kart/World, etc. I might get a bit more serious like a Halo, Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, Farcry, Cuphead, etc., but not too much.

I cannot play anything with anime, turn based, fantasy, RPG, Telltale, sony movie game, fighter, or story focused. I need dexterity in my gaming (yes I’m aware fighters require heavy dexterity, but I don’t like em). Computations or drama bore me when I’m being entertained.

Multiplayer usually holds my attention the most when I game.

I play heavy story games. I love Sony's "movie" games like GOW, Uncharted, and Spiderman. Yakuza is one of my favourite series and it has tones of cutscenes. I also like many anime games, like Tales, Senran Kagura, Sengoku Basara, Koei's Warriors, Ni no Kuni, and Blue Reflection. I also like fighting games, despite I'm very casual.

I like to play immersive games. Games that really sell their setting and do a lot to draw you in.

"I'll play anything" is the type of gamer that I am and if it looks fun, I'll play it. I'm open-minded (well not all the time) just about any games that comes my way.

I tend to be weary of games with alot of plot because I can rarely remember the plotlines afterwards so it shows how much impact those stories tend to have on me.

Games are better for immersing yourself in a way in which you create the plot with your actions.

I don't like games with anime teenagers with 00's tude (stroppy).

Mindless / Deep (story) / Both

These options are rubbish.

I'll say mindless just to try to keep the poll meaningful but I could go a year without playing a 'mindless' game because I'm playing strategy or something.

Is World of Tanks mindless or deep? I don't know.

I gravitate towards games that tell an interesting story... but I also love games that are mechanically fun (Super Mario Odyssey is some of the most fun I've had playing a game in years).

I will play anything with friends, but prefer largely story-heavy or immersive solo experiences or those with a focus on tight mechanics (platformers, action games, etc).

Deep story games such as Metal Gear Solid 4, God of War, Yakuza and Detroit.

I'm not the biggest fan of multiplayer or mindless fun.

Game just needs to be fun and have good rewards and motivation for me. I wasn’t motivated to continue playing breath of the wild even though it is fun. Stories do work as a reward for me and motivation so kingdom hearts 3 I’m getting through even though it has largely been mash X save for some boss fights.

I play anything.

My big passion have always been figthing games and that won't ever change, i'm the sort of guy who goes into the lab, train with a character, learn it and then go and have competitive matches, either online or in my local community (at least when there used to be one).

I also heavily enjoy story driven games like The Last of Us or Silent Hill 2.

Action/Adventure games are also my thing, i love Zelda, Bayonetta, Devil May Cry, Hollow Knight. Even a few shooters every once in a while like Doom.

Platformers like Super Mario, Rayman or The Puppetter, Cuphead, etc.

Horror games are a must as well, like i said, i love Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Soma, etc.

I used to play a lot of RTS like Warcraft and Starcraft, i also enjoy JRPGs, CRPGs.

That doesn't mean i don't enjoy some mindless games, i mean i'm currently playing a few tower defense games on my cellphone and i'm big on Hearthstone.

Last but not least, sports games are so fun with friends, a good matches of NBA2k and WWE2K are good for some good laugh, etc.

So yeah, i don't pretend that i like every game (can't stand some popular games like Minecraft or Freddys), but as long as i believe they are fun and that i will enjoy them, i have no problem, hell i remember playing The Little Mermaid on the NES back in the days.

I like games that are simple to pick-up-and-play yet very challenging to beat and prioritizes fun gameplay over story or realism.

In other words, the complete opposite of the typical modern AAA game.

I will play most genres, but I won't touch singing, puzzle games ever. There are other genres I haven't played this gen like fighting games as they are boring, and I very rarely play sports games much unless these games are from Australian sports like Cricket or Rugby League.

Do we lump in snowboarding games with sports? I still like to play SSX on the 360. Mostly I'll play anything, I'm pretty diverse. I enjoyed all the Telltale games, my favorite fighting game to date is King of Fighters XIII, and I just started playing Kingdom Hearts series.

I completely agree with this. I'm only basically interested in some Indie and Nintendo games and the occasional nicely polished third party titles like the last 2 Rayman iterations.

Overall I prefer mindless fun, as I hardly ever care or remember narrative in video games, or rather often I find it hard to follow the story in a video game when my mind is occupied doing stuff in the game, like for example I could never really focus and understand those radio messages from Andrew Ryan during gameplay in Bioshock, it felt like I was missing out on the narrative but in order to pay attention to those I would have to stop and listen, which is not always possible if splicers are attacking you :D
