I just finished up No More Heroes 2. Played both NMH 1 and NMH2 back to back, and I think the original is much better. Boss battles were challenging and tense and fun. The bosses themselves had a lot of charm and uniqueness to them. I felt like the sequel was kind of a retread, with the exception of trying to streamline certain elements such as eliminating the money grind. The first game seemed inspired. I hope the upcoming third game is more like the first, although the 2 wasn't terrible by any means. The combat for example had some nice additions.

Other sequels that come to mind are Ni No Kuni 2 and MGS V. Ni No Kuni lacked the charm of the original, its characters and story. Like NMH2, didn't seem as inspired as its predecessor. Combat was pretty cool, but also easy and button mashy. The original felt more tactical. As for MGS V, it lacked the Kojima craziness, writing, and charm. No self awareness or fourth wall, or clever conversations (maybe there was some, I forget). But it was too serious. Also, boss battles sucked. How is this an MGS game? Anyway, I digress.

How about you, SW? What sequels disappointed you?

Marvel vs Capcom Infinite is a more recent one. A real shame because gameplay wise it was quite good but most everything else was not.

Strongly agree about ni no kuni 2, first one was one of the jrpg in ages and second one was just very average and also extremely easy...

Otherwise Doom eternal comes to mind, thought the original new doom was great, but eternal was just a boring ammo simulator imo..

@Pedro: Gameplay was still great but the story was predictable and boring. Every plot twist they had could be seen coming a mile away and I found it to be annoying.

Rainbow 6: Vegas probably the most.

Was huge fan of the series, saw raving reviews.

Then I played it.

I thought Ori 1 was better than Ori 2 and Guacamelee 1 was better than Guacamelee 2. Those are the ones coming to mind right now.

Dragon Age II - disjointed, aimless story, fetch quests galore, annoying enemy waves, annoying camera system, recycled environments.

Quake II - Quake I had imagination and character to it. Quake II was like a beige sofa.

Prince of Persia: Warrior Within - remember when Peter Parker went emo goth and danced like a narcissistic moron in Spider-man 3? Yeah, this is the gaming equivalent of that.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - initially it disappointed me by what a rushed-mess it was. Mods redeemed it.

Unreal Tournament 3: a fraction of the content of UT2004, and very irritating to set up a bot match. Tried it for a few matches, then quickly went back to UT2004.

Dawn of War II - honestly, I didn't like the stripped down gameplay. Still fun, and the Retribution expansion was a blast, but it just didn't feel like a Dawn of War game.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate - it's. Just. So Bland. The story and most of the characters are cardboard cutouts, and most of the time all you do is go up to an icon on the map and press a button.

Forza Horizon 4 - still a very good game, but the live service multi-player garbage just got in my way, if I'm honest.

Speaking of DOOM Eternal, looking back at it now, not sure if I would rate it as highly as I originally did. I would say Returnal outclasses it. DOOM Eternal relies heavily on those glory kills and also just throwing a shit load of enemise at you in which you just spam weapons. The encounters in Returnal are tight and require precision and maneuring. It's less spammy, and more pure shooting.

I was fairly disappointed with God of War Ascension. Probably didn’t help that I was a bit burnt out on the franchise at that point either though.

Dragon Age II wasn't so hot, even though I really like Merrill.

Assassin's Creed 2 sucked. But then, so did the first one.

Tomb Raider Chronicles was a ridiculous letdown considering I went into it expecting a full-fledged old school TR.

While I don't hate the games, I've come to think that the Tomb Raider reboot series, seen as a kind of sequel to the original Tomb Raider series (not a sequel).......yeah, it sucks. But on their own the games are okay. Ish.

Uncharted 3 was a bit of a whimper. 4 was pretty good though, and sealed up the series nicely.

All I can think of at the moment.

Resistance 3 was a pretty big letdown. I feel like everything they had been building toward in 1 and 2 was thrown out the window so they could just wrap up the series. In hindsight 2 is also a big disappointment, since they tried hard to make it into CoD.

Before I came to my senses , and I still liked AC, I found - Brotherhood and Revelations to be disappointing follow ups to 2.

I got into the series with DMC3, so 2 couldn't disappoint. I feel like 4 is disappointing compared to 3 though. Nero feels quite limited compared to Dante, and I didn't really like Dante's weapons in 4.

God of War Ascension was definitely not as good as 3 and it's even more disappointing now since that was the last proper entry in the series.

Tomb Raider Legend was disappointing after playing through Anniversary.

Red Faction Armageddon ... it's a fine game, but Guerilla's open world mayhem was sorely missed.

Metro Exodus, I don't like the more open design of the game, there was way too much human drama at times. Previous games narrower level design helped with pacing, and better juggled the various elements in the story, from action and stealth, to fighting humans, monsters, experiencing weird paranormal bits, and not overkill on human drama. Exodus not so much.

I don't know why, I didn't like Mario Galaxy 2 as much as the first and it was pretty much universally praised by most outlets.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider, mechanically based off of Rise of the Tomb Raider plus some new mechanics, but the game's combat was so lacking that there was rarely opportunity to exercise new abilities.

Alien vs Predator from 2010, sometimes see called AVP3 but I guess technically a reboot. And it was Rebellion who did the original Atari Jaguar game (I had that!) and brought series to PC, where I mostly played second game that was made very Monolith Productions (FEAR, Condemned, Shadow of Mordor), and they made this. I remember it being panned critically at release, and it released in a packed window where better games got better attention. I tried my best to like it and at times it was good but largely disappointing. It is nice though over years Rebellion has improved greatly, and probably best over their time making games over the 8th gen (Sniper Elite, Zombie Army, Battlezone, Strange Brigade). They should take another crack at it. If not, that Aliens: Fireteam game looks promising.

Final Fantasy X-2 - Couldn't grasp and accept Yuna's personality, it was such a big transition. I miss her being innocent and brave in FF10.

Golden Sun 3 - Storyline was ok and not very challenging, unlike 1 and 2.

Kingdom Hearts 3 - Felt the game as a whole was a bit lacklustre in content and not very challenging, unlike 1 and 2.

  1. Uncharted 3-Very disappointed all that amounts to what Drake isn't even part of Sir Frances Drake bloodline family and comes off as Drake's a nobody.
  2. Crackdown 3-What a total mess of a game it was.
  3. Shadow of the Tomb Raider-Really tries so hard to be Uncharted which it shouldn't be and pretty much too short compare to Rise of the Tomb Raider.
  4. Golden Sun: Dark Dawn-Really nothing like the other two fantastic games and I never finished it.
  5. Halo 5-The Campaign was truly forgettable, it made the whole game look like a joke. At least the MP was awesome so it made up for that.
  6. Killzone: Shadow Fall-A tech demo game showing what PS4 can do but the game itself was forgettable.
  7. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain-Kojima's final MGS game he'll ever make but the game itself failed to live up to his expectation and it was rushed out the door. In the end, it was all Konami's fault so really shouldn't be hard on him but still, MGS5 was disappointing.

Golden Sun Dark Dawn (A disappointment, but I still enjoyed it)

Nioh2 is better game than 1 tho, sure it looks very similar but they they tuned the already great combat system to be even deeper and better, new set bonuses that reward player mixing up their play, enemy behaviour changes in ng+ cycles etc.

Wish we got more of these "lazy" sequels lol

Final Fantasy 7 and 8. After loving 1,3,4,5 and 6, It was tough dealing with not liking 7 or 8. (8 is one of the worst games of all time in my opinion)

On the bright side, I LOVED 9!

On the not so bright side, I did not like 10 or 10-2

On the bright side, I LOVED 11 and 12!

On the not so bright side, I did not like and of the FF 13 games.

On the bright side, I enjoyed 14

On the not so bright side, I HATED 15, and did not like 7 Remake (Ditry ugly Midgar does NOTHING for me whatsoever, being stuck in it for the entire game??!?! Yikes.)

Final Fantasy is like a yoyo for me. Good 1/2 the time, Absolute crap the other 1/2 of the time.

Crysis 2

It does so many things right. It improves the gunplay, the graphics, the audio. It revamped the multiplayer. I like how you can now upgrade the suit and get truly overpowered in the end game.

And yet it in no way reaches the hights of its predecessor. Levels allow for improvisation, but not for sensation.

The first level of Crysis 1 (and many other levels) is a true sandbox and you can skip about 95% of the level by just swiming to the exit.

The first levels of Crysis 2 are just hallways.

From this gen anyway definitely Xenoblade chronicles 2. Playing XC:DE really reminded me just how badly they got 2 wrong.

Plodding, bloated combat. just generally bloated. nonsensical story. generally uninteresting characters. some character designs that are....er...not portable friendly.

its like a game that was 70% developed by randy teenagers (maybe the vets at monolithsoft were pulled onto BOTW duty or something) then the last 30% the vets returned, saw what happened and tried to turn it around....before management decided to ship it while it was still in first draft (it was even buggy by nintendo standards at release).

the game frickin haunts me though because, despite all those problems, it has flashes of brilliance. it does have some great ideas and brushes off some great story arcs and every now and then it clicks before falling apart again. it's a game that, despite all its flaws, is actually really fixable and thats why i consider more disappointing rather than just bad (though it is bad).

the game clearly needed at least another year in the oven....and an editor.

don't touch that soundtrack though....its one of the greats.

Latest TR, Rise was so much better. DMC 2 was plain shit. Ninja Gaiden 3, WTF? Crash Bandicoot 4, stupid hard. Super Mario Odyssey, main game felt too easy. MGS5, ruined the spirit of MGS. Crysis sequels, streamlined gameplay sucked.

Another vote for Invisible War, Quake 2 and R6 Vegas from me, though Lockdown and Critical Hour weren't too great either. Two games that disappointed me most of all though are Everquest 2 and Crysis 2.
