I know there will likely be steambox with 12+GB of RAM, lots of storage and high end graphics cards. Yet, very few of the games available on Linux would require a PC that more

I'm often an ignorant person, and I hope this is one of the times I'm ignorant (correct me if I'm wrong), but as long as Linux doesn't have most of the AAA PC games, isn't it just a needlessly powerful Ouya with Windows streaming?

But with what games? Can Linux play Crysis 3, Witcher 2, Assassin Creed IV, and the like?

To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.

Valve said something like 1000 games are working on SteamOS so far. Because of the hold Steam has on PC games and the future of PC gaming, there's a good chance developers will support it out of the box in future. If they do, Steam will essentially become the new PC gaming OS and Valve will have "saved" PC gaming from the mediocre support Microsoft has given it over the years and people of a distant future will gather round the fire with a flaggon of mead and tell tales of Gaben's legacy.

yeah, i hope so. i just wont ever buy a console on speculation.

it's one thing to convert games one-by-one. and its another thing to have devs actually develop for it. they may convert assassin creed 1-3 to linux, but will AC5 be made on linux?

Not yet, but I guess Valve will make sure that majority of high-end games work on SteamOS. We'll see. Only Valve knows that.

is still a pc and you can install windows. Also steam machine wont be just 1. Valve said there will be many models from different manufacturers. Some will cost$500 others over $1000.

Also Metro LL was recently released for Linux ( and i do hope alot more will be released for linux now with steamOS )

yeah if you install windows and use steam on fullscreen mode it resembles the steamOS. But i still think they will find a way for steamOS to run steam games.

I'm sure more games will start supporting it more. They wouldn't release a system like that without any games to play on it. Valve aren't stupid

Just another 3do in the making. Hope no one loses too much money on it. But for those that haven't been around since the beginning, there has never been a successful console where the manufacturing has been farmed out.

To establish a more standard PC platform for developers to cater to in hopes of drawing more of them to Linux and away from Windows, which Gabe no longer likes.

You're dreaming if you think all devs will be on board with doing a Linux port for Steam OS.

That said, no one is stopping anyone who buys a Steam Machine from installing Windows on it.

So basically my concerns are valid. Why not just get a $70 steambox with basic specs that can stream your windows PC to your tv.

Why pay $500 for a strong Steambox?
