Now were seeing the truth 4k/30fps, 1440p/30 fps. What is the real truth about what you expect from next gen ?

60 fps & whatever resolution allows it. I'm sure we'll get 30 fps with an emphasis on graphics though.
30 fps for most games, just like every single console gen. It's consoles, do you really expect them to do any better then that?
I rather it be 60fps no matter the resolution.
People keep on brining up the UE5 demo yet, no one batted an eye until *after* someone told them it was dynamic 1440p as opposed to native 4k.

On topic, dynamic 4K/30. Yes, there will be games that are going to hit the mark.
Hopefully developers will put the option in their games to adjust it. I’d like to see them go with whatever resolution they need to keep the frame rate at 60 if not though.

Literally no one saw the demo and thought the current consoles (which can actually hit resolutions above 1440p) looked better than what they just saw. Let me put it this way ... if they didn't mention the actual resolution, basically everyone would have thought it was 4K simply because it *looked* better (the live / vod streams were "4K").
My two points are 1) you can have games that look significantly better that aren't "true 4k" and 2) we don't *need* to hit "true 4K" to get "next gen" graphics. If "next gen" games look like *that* and are "only 1440p" then so be it. I'd be pretty pretty dang satisfied with those graphics at lets say 1080p 60fps.
From what I understand native 4k is a stupid waste of resources. So I hope devs won't push it for marketing reasons. I expect 1440p upscaled at 30 fps for the big AAA exclusives once they have shed this gen.
But what do I know lol.

The question is the same how did you know that literally no one batted an eye? So far I didn't see any evidence.
Just to give you a heads up, there are people who rip apart DLSS 2.0 screens/videos without looking at the native screenshots and on the other spectrum also notices when the games tried to use sharp filters to compensate it. Happened on this very forum as well. They don't need someone to tell them the resolution or framerate. Also when did video first went up majority of them either saw it on phones or laptops like me because it was still working hours.
Probably by everyone you mean console gamers since they don't know what 4K looks like and are accustomed to vaseline covered games.
By and large i suspect that most games over the life of both consoles will be 1440P - 1600P with various post processes (DLSS, checkerboard rendering, TAA, VRS etc.) to reduce the workload while upscaling to 2160P. At the start of gen there may be more 4k/60 games as they will essentially be current gen ports but as the workload from the tech increases, compromises will be introduced.
So 4K*********
That makes sense for a console too in fairness. It is the correct approach. 4K just seems to be a hump the GPU industry can't brute force its way past at the moment (at a reasonable price at least). played on a telly in a living room, the compromises to the image introduced by that stuff won't really be that noticeable.
i think the framerate for most games will also be 30FPS (with 60FPS being the focus for racing games and MP focused FPSs. i think devs of those types of games will continue to focus on 60FPS). similar to the res, there may be more 60FPS games at the start of gen since the CPUs in the PS5 and XSX can easily run X1X/PS4 pro games at 60FPS. but once devs start pushing them the FPS will drop for more and more games to 30FPS.
They should let you turn on or off the setting yourself in an advance option menu, and have a simpler option menu that aims for performance or resolution-graphics.
PS5 = 1440p 30fps
Xbox Series X = 4k 30fps
lol you people make me laugh. just because of one tech demo you have the answers. it took them only 6 months and a team of 25 people to get that demo running the way it was. now imagine a team of a hundreds with 2 or more years to develop a game with that scale of performance. this goes for the series x as well.
not only that it was uncompressed data they used in this demo. now add the krekken or microsoft compression.
4K/30fps and 3K/60fps
When I say 3K I mean ± 3K so anywhere from 2.4K, 2.6K, 2.8 or even 3.2K (1440p, 1620p, 1800p)
What they should have with every game is the following three options
4K @ 30 fps, maximum quality, maybe a lil extra effects (like slightly better textures, lighting, a bit better ray tracing) with dips below 30 being 'acceptable'.
For lack of a better name, this mode is the '3K/60' where performance never dips below 60fps, so a dynamic resolution from 2560x1440p to 2880x1600p to ensure that smooth 60 fps at all times.
2K/120 for the silkiest and smoothest gameplay maybe even go up to 144fps and lower res to 1600x900p@
Anyway, if I were making the consoles and developing games that is what I would go for. I'm a graphics whore so I would choose the Cinema mode everytime, I'm playing Control which is probably 1440p/20fps and tbh I'm not really willing to lower the res for higher fps :p
I guess every game except COD I will use Cinema mode (4K/30) but the COD-type games I will play in Balanced mode (3K/60)
@Yams1980: What makes you think 16:9 is dated at 21:9 is better?
I'm a cinephile/videophile and 16:9 > 21:9 even in movies. Why the hell would I want my games in 21:9
4k/60fps. The devs have not touched the new systems yet in any meaningful way. Lot of devs are still using development kits provided by MS and Sony. Once the get to grip with the extra power we be hitting 4k to 60fps for the majority of games. If you don't want to sacrifice texture quality, maybe the drop resolution?
There literally no reason both consoles can't do 60fps. The 4K-60FPS target maybe needs a compromise or some technique to produce a 4k image will less eating up of resources. I'm sure the new systems will have new techniques to enable high level detail graphics.
@loe12k: what texture quality hits is the ram and thus bandwidth available, if you arent bottlenecked by those they have very limited performance impact

An overlooked feature of the X is the memory bus (384 bit), it higher than the PS5. The memory flowing lot faster to the GPU. The level of detail will be phenomenal on the X.
Higher bus means the data flowing to the GPU at a much faster pace. It's crucial for resolution. It like a pipeline to the GPU the smaller the pipe, the less data can be cycled and be used for each picture.
What I really want to see is the option for performance vs resolution ( should it be needed) as standard.
I prefer 4K over 60 FPS for some games and 1440p 60 for others. Being able to decide for myself would be great.
