I was a PS4 hater since get go, but that isn't cause some lemming. I was all PS3 at beginning of this generation, and thought PS4 sucked cause PS3 was better, just as I thought my PS2 was better than the new PS3. I only really loved PS3 cause of the PS2/PS1 games. I got PS4 cause I love PS2 games, and The Last Guardian and Persona 5 were 1, 2 PS2 punches, I also knew greatness awaited in coming years, and years of backlog helped with initial purchase.

Since launch I have heard the rounds: (in chronological order)

-Better policies and keeping traditional gaming (i.e. no forced kinect/online only)

-PS4 played multiplats better than One

-PS4 has exclusives

-PS4 has better exclusives

I know those are basic things fanboys say, but what makes you love PlayStation? I never lost faith in PlayStation like I have Nintendo, but as much as I loved old days of Nintendo, I just haven't liked their new consoles, especially Switch. In some ways feeling PlayStation is slipping away, and wondering why I love or care about them today.

I don't like how Nintendo does business, don't like how they drip feed news, hate their short baking products to cause mania, and really don't like their philosophy of game making.

In many ways I feel the same with PlayStation. They announce shit too soon, now skipping the conference that I fell in love with PS4 at in first place and skipping E3, didn't like their way of showing new games with musical openings, and so Sony just isn't the Sony I use to like. I hate their censoring policies, don't like their anti-consumer way of doing things, like remastering or ps now instead of real BC. There is no handheld, not really into VR, and most my favorite franchises from yesteryear aren't on PS4 or multiplat. In general, I haven't liked their way of doing business.

So I've come to conclusion, I can own PS4 without being a fan. Just play the few games I want from it and leave it be, yet I thought I could do that with Switch and I sold it. Of course I didn't spend last 3 gens ignoring PS like I did Nintendo. Sony had nothing to prove, still, if I wasn't led to believe these exclusives are must play, and didn't have initial games I wanted, I'd have zero reasons for a PS4.

It's sitting in the corner here, abour 3 feet away. Sometimes I tilt my head over from the my laptop and wonder "what is the point of you, why are you here? How much would I get off ebay?", but then I realize it can play bluerays, and the Switch can't, because Nintendo are cheap but unwilling to sell cheap.

It's a very good blueray player with an intuitive menu.

Sony has fantastic first party studios and IP's. Lots of good memories with PS3 and PS4 titles. I'm almost certainly going to get PS5 unless they do something overwhelmingly stupid and screw it up. Unlikely though, Sony has an excellent track record. Even after they screwed up ps3 launch, it ended up being a good (but way too long) generation.

Very strong first and third parties support all the way til the gen is over.

Strong first party and third party support no matter what. They don’t abandon their home consoles because they aren’t selling well or because they have reached close to the end of the gen like MS and Nintendo often do. You get a PlayStation home console and you are guaranteed it will be supported throughout the gen.

Edit: Notice I say home console? Their handhelds don’t have such a strong track record (ie. PS Vita) and that’s why I don’t buy them.

As mentioned, Sony has strong platform support compared to their peers. It's a great consumer feature.

@saltslasher: "So I've come to conclusion, I can own PS4 without being a fan. "

This is nothing new. This is what lemmings have been doing the entire gen. They hate the PS4 but they cant help but own it because it has a bunch of the gen-defining games. So they are forced to play something they hate with tears in their eyes *Insert meme of Xbox gamer crying*

Thankfully PS4 fans dont have the opposite problem and they can skip the X1 cause it's crap and there's nothing of value to lose by not owning it.

This is also why the PS4 is kicking X1 ass so easily and even the Switch soon. People realize which systems are must owns (PS4) and which is skippable (X1).

I think applying the term "love" to a console is a bit too much. It's like loving a VCR or a TV, sounds kinda weird to me.

For me, it all started with Warhawk on PS1 way back in the day, I remember thinking “omg I have an arcade machine attached to my TV”. Then there was FFVII wich was a huge deal for me and the Final Fantasy’s just kept coming one after the other it was so GREAT. And honestly I’ve never gone wrong with choosing PlayStation ever since. LOVE it 😍

I also do not get that much out of my Ps4. I like it for Assassin's Creed, Horizon and Persona 5 is good, but that really is about it. I could even get Assassin's Creed on PC, so the Ps4 is not really doing much for me. I will say that I 100% understand why some people love it, but highly narrative 1st party games like Uncharted, and God of War just are not my cup of tea.

- Rather consistent message since PS1 days.

- Nice price to performance ratio.

- Dualshock controllers always felt great to me

- Strong Third Party Support

- The exclusives are fantastic.

Solid exclusives that are based around a singleplayer experience.

I stopped playing multiplayer on consoles when they started charging for it.

Keeping half of your game hostage behind a paywall (subscription) is something I'll never become a fan of.

Well, nothing. I've never bought any PlayStation ever for that very reason. If I did, it's possible I'd enjoy the few games it has that actually look interesting to me, such as Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian (if I get over the fact that I have to play them with a controller I hate). Those games would be awesome to have on anything else than PlayStation though, so to me PlayStation is basically just a thing holding these games hostage to its' unwanted hardware. It's hard to love something like that.

PlayStation over the years:

-most genres (especially ps1 and ps2)

-new franchises come every gen and frequently unlike Nintendo and Microsoft which rely too much on the same core franchises

-majority of their first party games are high quality

-they’re very liberal with their studios and allow them freedom and ability to create new franchises ex- could have made naughty dog continue with uncharted after 3 but let them make last of us. Killzone got a break while GG made a new game in a new genre

-specially PS4, It has a faster better interface over Xbox one and has way more features and abilities than any Nintendo console probably will ever have.

Lol oops, I should have ended the sentence after X1X, which is in my living room.

The 360S is on my boat with a 1080P TV but I broke it last year, I forgot to lay the TV down before departing and got into rough waters and when I got to my destination and came down from the bridge I found the thing laying on the floor with a cracked screen. :(

Not too much of a biggie, it was only a 27" so fairly cheap to replace. :P

Honestly for me the Playstation is just a weak piece of plastic you are "forced" to buy if you want to experience some locked games (at their best possible version).

I really enjoyed the PS1 and PS2. Since then however, the brand has fallen off to me. The DS3 and DS4 controllers feel awful for starters. Then there is this "cinematic experience" focus in their first party games that is a HUGE turn off for me.

What's your stance on Nintendo/Sega/MS's evolution?

No comments on Xbox as I never had any. But Sega Genesis was good but Saturn and Dreamcast sucks. NES and SNES were good but N64 was average but GC/Wii/WiiU/Switch sucks.

Starting with the DS3, they made the R2/L2 triggers squishy. That is beyond stupid and why in shooters, the defaults for ADS and firing is R1/L1. That's dumb. And the DS4 battery life is atrocious.

I love Nintendo's evolution. They have had some stinkers for sure, but they take the biggest risks in the industry. Microsoft has been pretty meh. I like the controller and the fact that the S and X have UHD drives. Other than that, Microsoft's console would be even more meh than the PS4.

And watch your mouth when talking about the Saturn and Dreamcast! And the Gamecube, Wii and Switch are all amazing. The 64 had some great games but the controller kinda held it back a little. I will give you the Wii U being garbage. But without the Wii U, we wouldn't have the Switch today. And the Switch is amazing.

I can't think of a single thing to like about it the hardware. It's crap. Every part of it is an inferior experience to some other device I own.

I like the controller design, but the battery life is shit.

It's cheap. I guess that could be considered a good thing. It's a bad thing, but others may think it's a good thing.

The UI is better than most consoles.

There are some good exclusive games, but I don't think that should count towards the hardware being any good. If anything the cheap hardware does a disservice to those games.

PS4 Delivered everything I wanted this gen:

-Indie support (so i can play games typically I would previously only find on steam)

-Single Player Focused - I no longer want to play online games, PS4 has delivered great Single player games in spades.

-No hardware issues: Very few issues with the hardware itself, no issues after a few power-outs and son pulling on cable while PS4 was still on...

-Headphone jack in controller: I typically game after my wife and son go to bed, the headphone jack in the controller is awesome, I love this feature this gen.

-UI is awesome, love the navigation menu

-Apps like Netflix work great, no issues

Only thing as has been mentioned is the battery life on the controller sucks. Using the headphone jack I maybe get 5-6 hours tops.
