To me the heydey of rpgs were the last 90s / early 2000s. Squaresoft was a juggenaut. The final fantasy games, xenogears, vagrant story, and more. JRPGs used to be the shizzle. The only one I really want now is Ni No Kuni 2 and Persona 5. What about you, SW? Which RPGs do you like?

I like all RPG's. From Planescape Torment to Dragon Age and Final Fantasy and everything else in-between. It's my favourite genre. An RPG has to be pretty bad for me not to persevere with it.

All out best RPG: Everquest on PC. Nothing beats playing with and against real people and this game did both better than any game that followed it. WoW is Everquest For Girls.

Best turn based: Lost Odyssey on 360. Amazing game with deep lore and great stories and addictive gameplay.

Best action RPG: Dragon Age Inquisition. Best open world game ever for me even though the RPG elements were functional at best. Incredible environments to explore, unmatched IMO.

Best JRPG: I'm going to go for Final Fantasy XIII, a game almost universally hated by people who claim to be Final Fantasy 'fans'. I loved the story and the gameplay and the graphics. I didn't cry because it wasn't 'open' enough. In fact I hate that most RPG's now try to out-open-world each other and litter the entire landscape with meaningless filler crap.

Most ground-breaking RPG: Torn between Ultima VII Black Gate and System Shock on PC. One of them probably fits the bill. Or not. I don't know. Ultima Underworld is also in with a shout.

Those are my thoughts. Handle with care, I don't have many of them.

I used to really be into the older jrpgs and crpgs.

I'm just not much into the genre(s) these days. A lot of the big name titles are just crappy action games with stats. Of course I'm sure there are good ones out there if I cared to look.

The only rpgs I'm looking forward to at the moment are the new Torment and Divinity OS 2.

STALKER: Call of Pripyat. RPG with guns? Sure thing. ;) Just because it have guns instead of sword and shields doesn't make it a shooter.

Good rogue gameplay, not overpowered (like Skyrim) but still a feeling of empowerment, coupled with vulnerability (i.e. crap armor and low health pool).

I mostly enjoy WRPGs like Skyrim, Fallout, Witcher, Mass Effect.

Within the last 3 or 4 years ive been slowly getting into JRPGs such as Star Ocean, Last Remnant, Lost Odyssey.

Not a fan of the anime-type RPGs

the ones that are not in first person view....I like both western & jpn rpgs. I didn't get into Ni No Kuni though..I think it was just too basic?..not enough weapons/armours/ etc. Tried it a few times then just gave up. :P

Here's a giant list of RPGs that I like, either stand alone, or series.

Pokemon (favorite is Heartgold)

Dragon Quest (favorite is IX, currently playing VII and enjoying it despite its quirks)

Knights in the Nightmare

Radiant Historia

Etrian Odyssey IV/ Untold (only two I've played... I enjoyed IV more but Untold was great too)

Shin Megami Tensei IV (still need to get into more of the series)

Final Fantasy (story wise, VI is my favorite, gameplay wise, V is my favorite)

Chrono trigger

LISA: The Painful and its DLC The Joyful

Fallout 3

KOTOR (I enjoyed both equally despite the non ending of 2)

Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines (really, really amazing game with the mods and patches)

Borderlands (GOTY edition of 2 is my fav)

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate

Fire Emblem Awakening/ Fates (Revelations is my favorite)

Souls (played the most of Dark 1 and 2, 1 is my favorite)

Xenoblade

Bravely Default

The Last Story (I'll fight anyone who says otherwise, it's a great game despite its flaws)

Paper Mario (Thousand Year Door is my favorite, no contest)

Mario and Luigi (Bowser's Inside Story is one of the most purely creative games I've ever played)

Just to name a few. As you can see I primarily do JRPGs, but I do enjoy me a great WRPG every once in a while.

All of them. The more layers of complexity, the better. Even JRPG's can be good IF it has Golden Sun on the boxart.

I don't really like them anymore - too much of a timesink for what you get.

Playing a game with heavy RPG elements, like MGS5, appeals to me a lot more.

Mostly WRPGs now. I always liked them but I used to play JRPGs a lot in the 90s and 2000s.

I do dabble in JRPGs, but mostly prefer WRPGs like Neverwinter Nights, KOTOR, Dragon Age, The Elder Scrolls, etc.

I don't play rpgs that often, but when I do, the main things I'm looking for is the game not to have any required grinding, as well as not be cryptic to the point that I'm forced to use guides.

As to whether I prefer jrpgs or wrpgs, I don't really care, so my all-time favorites consist of a mixture of both types: Panzer Dragoon Saga, Chrono Trigger, Skies of Arcadia, Valkyria Chronicles, Pokemon gens 1-2, KOTOR, Mass Effect 1-2, and The Witcher III.

Pretty much all of them, aside from most CRPG's unfortunately. Weird since I should be the type that loves that kind of stuff, but I get way too paranoid with builds and those games tend to just not have the controls and view that I like. For builds it tends to be a major issue with me only in CRPG's though since they tend to be harder than normal RPGs and it bugs me missing so many options that may help later.

I like RPGs that have certain elemnets in them, setting or industry (jRPG/wRPG) be damned.

  • Full Party Creation
  • Multiple Playstyle that fill far more roles than just fighter, thief mage, or damage dealer, tank healer. How about some proper fucking support?
  • Low stat bloat
  • Low Level Cap
  • Tactical Turn Based Combat
  • A variety of weapons to choose from. Not just 30 swords, but maces, clubs, flails, hammers, SPEARS, ect. That also ideally function differently.
  • Consumable items are well implemented. And not just vendor trash.
  • Limited/No trash encounters
  • Low power curves (anything at or under 2x)

I dislike RPGs that have certain elements in them.

  • Storydriven games
  • Predefined protagonist
  • Open World
  • Action RPG
  • Bandit Camps
  • Voiced Protagonist
  • Dialogue Wheel
  • Checklists
  • Respawning enemies in the world map
  • Large power curves (anything above 10x)
  • Roleplaying games that are anti Roleplaying (see most jRPGs, the Witcher)

No interest in Tyranny? Releases in 5 days

As for topic I do like most of the genres, tho last 5+ years or so has been pretty barren on JRPG side. If I had to pick a favorite it's most likely Crpg
