@davillain-: Not a WX, no. Those things dont do too well with gaming. The 2950x or 2920x are possibilities though. I love the way the wraithripper cooler looks.

i7 4790 @ 4 GHz
ASRock mobo
16 GB memory
Nvidia Geforce GTX 980
23" 144 hz monitor 1920x1080, best upgrade I made in recent years
Oculus Rift VR headset with dual trackers. Also an amazing upgrade.
loaded with Win 10
This has been the best PC I've built so far; performs great to this day, and has lasted me many years. Unfortunately, while it still has a few miles left to go, the ol' girl is getting a little long in the tooth. Been setting some money aside for an Intel i9 (or whatever the 9th gen procs will be called) and Nvidia GTR 2080 or whatever they're calling them (I've read they won't be called GTX 1180's)
@mrbojangles25:
Ryzen 2700x or 9900k would be a big upgrade for you.
I have some mixed feelings with Nvidia's new gpus coming out. The Tensor cores and Ray tracing aspects of the core will be underutilized and pointless until games start using the the tech for the more demanding lighting techniques(still not true ray tracing). Consoles, AMD gpus , and the rest of the Nvidia market do not have the ray tracing performance of the new gpus. Which means the vast majority of devs will not focus or code for the new tech until the until the tech and hardware that can handle it is more of a standard. Which means that RTX 2080 etc will perform alot like a refined Pascal gpu in normal games..... they will be under utilized I do believe.
While its nice Nvidia isnt pulling a intel move ,and are still innovating on their designs, true ray tracing in general for gaming is still years out.

1080p 55-Inch Samsung (upgrading to 4k 65-Inch QLED in a couple months)
So based on the timing, are you aiming for a GTX 2050/60 or maybe all the way for the RTX2070/80 ?
@carljohnsoncj:
My sig. My year 2013 Samsung ATIV Book 8 laptop's Radeon HD 8870M/R9-M270 series GPU died (cracked solder joint, I might re-flow it later) and I ordered HP x360 Envy 15X with Ryzen 5 APU as it's replacement.
My Samsung laptop's Intel HD 4000 IGP still works. Intel's socketed 45 watts APU still works, while AMD's 35 watts GPU failed.

Can you run modern games at 1440p 144hz and if yes at what settings?
Most games will run at 60+ fps 1440p at close to max settings. Some recent stuff:
G-Sync is pretty important when your frame rate changes a lot. If I had a non g-sync monitor I'd probably try to get a more stable frame rate by locking it and adjusting settings a bit lower so there are no dips. G-Sync eliminates the need to worry about that. G-sync also lets you turn v-sync off which really reduces input latency.

@GarGx1: "64Gb Corsair Vengeance DDR4 RAM"
Whaaaat? I say, you must be doing lots of video editing?
Nah, I just got the core parts for free.
The PC the parts came from was in a house fire but not thermally damage, just soot contamination. Then because it was less than a year old and wet restoration voids most manufacturer warranties it was written off. I washed it and built the parts I wanted into a new system. Also got an Oculus Rift and a Samsung (odd polish import model) 47" 4k HDR TV and set of racing pedals (my Thrustmaster Warthog doesn't have an X axis) but I didn't have room for the tri-screen racing chair, so I pawned that with the two spare screens for some pocket money. Oh! and I was paid for all the time I spent on the restoration as well because I done it during work time. :)

Just did a little itx build for the living room, too. Ryzen 2400g, 16GB DDR4, Plextor M9Pe 256GB NVMe ssd. It's a more of a media server that can play games on the side if need be.

Truly amazing find and the restoration story as well. You're good at your work and I do like how you customize your PC :)
@BassMan:I might do that, and buy the OLED for my room in the interim then. I'm not desperate for 4K atm, but i'd rather have the latest if it's for my gaming/movie TV. My bedroom will just be for movies and streaming as it is now.
@AdobeArtist:Going whole hog on this next GPU, so highest end I can get at the time. If the 2080 hits in a reasonable timeframe, i'll go for that.
@Cloud_imperium: Did you use any mods ? Or is that vanilla ?
