What is the best PlayStation console?

The choice is not on there , the nintendo playstation

I've owned every PlayStation console and ps2 was the best and I'm very happy with PS4 but it's too early to judge properly.

I enjoyed them in this order.

PS2 > PS1 > PS3 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> PS4.

The Playstation 3 is the only right answer. Best library of games by far. Best games in every genre by far.

BC PS3 is the only right answer. It can play three generations of Playstation games.

Among the PS consoles, I would say PS3.

What makes you think PS4 will eventually take down the godly PS1/PS2 and the above average PS3?

PS4 library is made up of indies and PS3 ports isn't it?

Don't bring up PS4 is still new, because I'll argue that PS4 will be going in its 3rd holiday season.

At that same timeframe, PS1, PS2 and even PS3 had quality titles.

So the answer should be PS2/PS1>PS3>PS4 or PS1/PS2>PS3>PS4

As an owner of all on the list. By far my favorite is the PS2 for its line up of JRPGS and Action/Platform games.

PS2 showed leap and bounds and was released at the perfect time.

I disqualified the PS4 in my post. I voted PS2.

PS3 for me.

Many great games that still hold up. Ability to have a large library on your harddrive. Decent battery length on controllers.

Of the 4 Sony PlayStation consoles. The legendary PlayStation 2 gets the nod as the greatest ever.

I know I'm in the minority here but I think PS3 is the best PS console based on all the games I have for it compared to the others.

Right, and you would like me to debate something that neither of us know the future about, which is an absolutely pointless endeavour. I said, "I could see the PS4 taking the top spot (in competing with former PS machines), but we won't know until at least the PS5 is out at the very least and we can look back." It's simply not worth your time nor my time since we won't know how it plays out until the gen is over, which I already said. I'm saving you time because there is nothing to be gained about arguing the current PS console as the gen isn't over. I said I could see the PS4 taking the top spot at some point in the future (the machine already has about 100 more games [more games at retail too] than the rival Xbone, although both machines released in Nov 2013. That is a feat that surprised me as both machines have a very similar architecture and porting to the Xbone should be a snap), but I could also see the machine not doing so well TO ME (if timed exclusives and random DLC continue the way the are headed, although others might argue that's what they like). I can list pros and cons for this gen so far, but it's such a waste of time. The gen is not over. Who cares.

That's why I disqualified the PS4 completely, to stop some random user that wanted to argue about the PS4 console, especially with users that don't even own various consoles I'm discussing.

Anything can happen, good or bad, for any machine as we've seen over and over and over throughout history. It's too early to say one way or the other.

No point in arguing about hypothetical 'what if' scenarios which is why I disqualified the PS4 in my post; to prevent some random arguing to or for the current gen as the gen isn't over. There are those arguing about the current gen PS machine as the best PS machine, my recommendation is to go argue with them.

This is one argument that has one answer. Objectively speaking the PlayStation 2 is the greatest console ever.

this is coming from a die-hard Sega fan. Regardless of whatever metric or benchmark you use the PlayStation 2 wins out. pick a genre the PlayStation 2 has the best games pick sales figures the PlayStation 2 dominates.

By sales the PS2 is the best. By what resonated with me most? That was the PS3. It had soo many great exclusives that it was hardly turned off in some years. Uncharted 1-3, Demon's Souls, God Of War III, Beyond Two Souls, Heavy Rain, Many JRPG's, etc... We al know them by now.

So if 10 people played the best version of a game but 100 people played a lesser version which system had more impact?

Also lesser version or not PS2 had every major 3rd party release for its gen. No other console can say that.

Honestly I only vote for the PS2 becuase I can play DMC 3 and my Street Fighter Collection on it otherwise. I would have choosen the option to say none. PS brand has just been meh to me. It's the system that you get unique experinces for because as the rest of the world wonders what the hell are the japanese into. I mean seriously those games that only release in japan are off the charts when it comes to completely out there ideas.

The best versions had the impact. Who cares about quantity. Who wants a bunch of mediocre games? There's a reason to own an NES, Genesis, Snes, N64, Saturn, GameCube, Dreamcast, and Xbox. These consoles have experiences that are unique to the console or supply the absolute best of something in a given genre.

Ps2 lacks in most genres. It has some cinematic RPGs and a few adventure game experiences. In comparison to all these other consoles, what exactly makes it worth owning?

Now I don't dislike the system, either. There's one five feet away from me. It's nice that used stuff is still cheap and there's something for everyone. Quality though? Eh, mushy buttons and lackluster interlaced video output most of the time.

PS3, because you can pretty much get the Best of PS2 and PS1 for that system.

Launch PS3 was the best for the BC and not to mention the great library it had throughout it's life. I want to say the 4 but it is still too early to tell. Once Persona 5, the FFVII Remake, Uncharted 4, and other great first party games come out (hopefully a new Gran Turismo) come around I am sure it will stand tall as a titan for the Playstation family.

You're missing the point. Whether or not a game is superior and another platform is not truly relevant. If that's the case there is no great game that people really play on Xbox one or ps4 so save for the exclusives.

the point is that people will not have been playing several awesome games if publishers did not put them on the ps2. Game developers put games on the ps2 because that's where the user base was and that's where the money was made.

PS2. Fun times.

Objectively, the PS2. One of the greatest selling consoles of all time, and one of the deepest library that included GT3, FFX, Grand Theft Auto 3 series. It's the last time you can say you only needed one console to enjoy an entire generation (minus PC and handhelds of course).

It's between PS1 and PS2. I will never be able to pick between the 2. Those machines had amazing games. You know what else they had? Exclusives. It makes me laugh when people say exclusives are anti-consumer when this generation has fewer exclusives than any before it. Just 2 gens ago there was a reason to buy one machine over the other. Today we nitpick over graphical details. Back in the day the fight really mattered since there were dozens of games that couldn't be played anywhere else.

@Heirren: FFX, Onimusha series, Ratchet and Clank, Gran Turismo 3, Guitar Hero 1, GTA series, Socom, Timesplitter, Sly Cooper series, MGS2 and 3? They're not considered good enough? That's the beauty of time, it weeds out the bad games and the good ones stand.

GC//Xbox had better versions of Time Splitters. GTA back then was only good on pc. Mgs2 was on Xbox. Forza was right up there with gta--even though both games have been eclipsed.

Why i choose Playstation over Playstation 2 :

1) Playstation was a newcomer and had to compete with already established brands that were dominating for years and years the home video gaming market , Nintendo and Sega. What PS did to the other 2 wasnt just a win ... was a domination and for a newcomer to do that to those 2 , oh boy oh boy.

2) Playstation huge success made Playstation 2 one of the most anticipated consoles of all time. Means alot of PS2s sales happened because of original PS , since PS managed to establish the PS brand. So sales speaking what PS1 did .. was a way , wayyy bigger feat than what PS2 did when PS2 was already an established brand because of PS1. That makes PS1 sales way more amazing to me as a total number

3) Playstation was first to have all those great games as exclusives/time exclusives that defined their genres or got really popular where we know them even today. Games like Silent hill , Metal Gear Solid , Resident Evil , Tekken , Final Fantasy 7 , Gran Turismo and more defined gaming and Playstation brand . Who doesnt know all the above series even today , after 20 years more or less ? When those series ( and a lot more ) get a new release millions of gamers getting excited! Its insane to even think about that all this began with original PS as a NEWCOMER , thats insane to even think about it.

Those are my strong reasons why i voted original PS over PS2. PS started from scratch and delivered while it had to compete with some of the best video gaming companies ever with already million of fans AND some of the best games ever created ( like Zelda , SM64 etcc) ... And it made it ... For that alone , i cant vote for PS2. PSX all the way here

I mean in terms of hardware and first years. PS4 cant obvipusly compete with the others, library wise.

PS3 managed to slap itself , lack of sales , lost exclusives to competition , lost being leading platform for multis , cut original hardware features in order to be competitive price wise , overpriced for no reason ( technologies that didnt even make sense back then and didnt even make a difference to begin with) and more ...

How is possible and with what kind of logic someone voted PS3 compared to older systems is beyond me

This was my collection I just sold a couple weeks ago :(

But I played and beat all these. I've never completed so many games in a single generation. The only one close was probably N64 where i beat roughly 20 games.
