Metal Gear Solid, Not a fan of Twin snake, but the original game is still my favorite of this franchise.

I just don't know how to answer this one anymore.

If we're strictly talking gameplay it's MGSV and it's not even close. Really makes it difficult to go back to the previous titles. But it's also loaded down with tons of baggage and the story is the least entertaining shit ever.

MGS3 is the most well rounded of the bunch. It delivers on everything. Feels a bit clunky these days and has some throw away systems/menus, but still a great game all around.

MGS2 is the best take on the classic MG/MGS template. It is to MG, MG2, and MGS what MGSV is to MGS3, MGS4, and PW. It took the locked camera perspective series of "puzzle rooms" stealth to its limits and still feels great to play. As an added bonus it's the most pure form of Kojimas mind fuckery to date.

-

That's pretty much the worthwhile parts of the series to me. Don't give much of a fvck for the rest of the titles. MG is garbage. MG2 is cool, but nothing I care to ever play again. MGS1 is just one of those "for it's time!" games. It's alright. Portable Ops is garbage. Had fun with Peace Walker, but it was always with the "For a handheld Metal Gear" excuse. And anybody who posts here already knows what I think of MGS4 lol.

Story wise its 3.

4 had the best action in there cutscenes Gameplay is def 5.

2 is the most iconic

1 felt the freshest if you played it when it came out.

Boss fights are a tie btw 1 and 3 with 4 not far behind

Alert phase A.I and enemy personality goes to 2.

They are all master pieces tho. Especially for times for time they released.

MGS3: Subsistence overall.

MGSV had the best gameplay but the open world was a let down.

Tough one for me. I voted for MGS (PS1). I had the best experience playing that game.

I put the most amount of time into MGS2, collecting dog-tags for all the difficulties, but I didn't care for the story. MGS3 had the best balance of gameplay and story, imo.

@mark1974:

Yeah it's definitely worth checking out if you like a good 3d beat em up. It never reaches the heights of the Bayonetta games, but still a damn good game in its own right.

Mgs3:s is the best overall experience but tpp is a much better game.

I cant seem to let go of the impact snake eaters story and ending had on me. I was much younger when i first beat it and at the time was very invested into the story and characters. That game felt so personal to me and i was so upset that i (playing the role as snake/big boss) had to make the ultimate decision and pull the trigger. Still gives me goosebumps.

Its funny how games can hit ya. Especially when young and impressionable (or maybe just dumb lol)

Ghost Babel is a pretty great game without any of the bloat or overindulgence that gradually took over as his ego went rampant. Fairly large intricate levels, more complex than the PS1 game, bit of puzzle solving but still very simple to play.

The translation to the hardware is impressive. Very much like.

I've only played around 4 of them and i think the original one on the PS1 was the best, but since i don't really like the series it's like me saying it's the least stinkiest shit :P

Metal Gear: Rising is the correct answer.

MGS is a shitty series that has crap story and clunky gameplay. MGS 4 was playable and MGS V has actually very good gameplay. So, all in all it only took Kojima 25 years to make a good game.

MGS2. It had the best gameplay of the original MGS trilogy. It wasn't primitive like MGS, nor clunky like MGS3, but felt just right. The controls were complex yet tight, the mechanics were smooth and refined, the level design was layered and interconnected in a Metroidvania-like fashion, and the physics, enemy AI and cover mechanics were revolutionary,

As for the story, I'd argue that MGS2 also had the best story in the series. Sure, the story may seem like bonkers, but it's the kind of story that subverts and transcends storytelling conventions. For example, long before the word "post-truth" ever existed, MGS2 predicted fairly accurately the kind of post-truth future we'd have today. It was postmodern art, like a window into the future.

The very first metal gear solid.

Phantom pain is boring, and most repetitive open world game ever where every single mission feel exact same.

Very difficult question.

Let's just say I love them all, but the one I didn't enjoy as much was Metal Gear Solid 4.

For pure gameplay it's MGS V: GZ and TPP. For overall enjoyment definitely Snake Eater. Sons of Liberty is badass as **** as is the first one. MGS 4 is the only one I didn't enjoy as much (still played it quite a bit despite not owning a ps3 ). You know what, **** it. All of them.

Snake Eater is the most well rounded experience out of the three. The story is without the typical Kojima baggage and despite the menu navigation I deeply enjoyed the camo/survival mechanics.

Phantom Pain, variety of issues aside has the best gameplay in the series. Not even remotely up for debate.

Sons of Liberty, while I still believe the narrative can be highly obtrusive and needlessly convoluted, is a genuine post-modern masterpiece that all too eerily resonates with the age we currently live in.

Overall it's probably MGS2. It's the most Kojima MGS game with a crazy story that subverts expectations and it perfected the MGS1 fast puzzle stealth gameplay with tight level design.

MGS3 has the best told story (but also the simplest) with a newer but slower type of gameplay, it also has the best boss fights.

MGSV has the best gameplay mechanics.

This question... Ah man. Well my favourite is 3. I love just about everything that game offers.

2 had the biggest surprise of them all, I remember me and my mate playing it for the first time and were shocked at what happened ha. But it's a great game and I love the way you got to see snake from a different perspective. I thought that worked so well.

4 is the reason I bought my ps4. Glad I did too. It gets some stick on here and I understand why, but I still think it's a great game and I loved mgs online. It got me back into MGS too after not playing them for years.

Metal Gear 1&2 - I've tried to play these properly but I get bored so quickly.

MGS PS1 was the game that started it all for me. That game was incredible at the time, it's always going to be one of my favourites. I've not actually played twin snakes yet but will.

MGSV I've still not finished. Ridiculously fun sandbox game, but I ended up getting sidetracked with other games and haven't gone back to it. But I will!

Ground Zeros - very fun, I can't remember how much I played but sure I did most of it. Again I got into other things and never went back.

Peace walker.. Never finished this.. I'll get it on vita and try again as I only played it on PS3 and I wasn't into it.

But yeah, I am a massive MG fan, I usually think of the whole series as one giant game as thinking about them individually is too hard for me.

Metal Gear Solid on Playstation is the best. It had the best balance between cutscene length and gameplay sections, a more grounded story reminiscent of 80s action movies that was easier to follow, which i appreciate more. Easily the best bosses in the entire series. Gameplay was simple, mostly top down 2D with sparse 3D segments, easy to get into and doesn't suffer from any camera issues or unintuitive control issues that plagued many games from the 5th generation that embraced fully 3D gameplay... All around, it's the best in the series, by far.

Later games screwed things up with insanely longer cutscenes and a nonsensical bullshit narrative convoluted in a badly written mess.

Twin Snakes was such a missed opportunity.. I would have loved to play the original with better graphics, who wouldn't? But no. Released in 2004 with graphics worse than Metal Gear Solid 2 (2001) and modifying the narrative to fit a more silly theme.

MGS3 is the best when it comes to the traditional formula. It was very well paced, the story is easy to follow an interesting, the gameplay was varied.... It was a well rounded game by Metal Gear standards.

MGSV is the best when it comes to gameplay. The game might have been unfinished but the gameplay's way ahead of every single current gen AAA game released so far, even Nintendo's.

Subsistence (3's updated version)
The Phantom Pain
Substance (2's updated version)
Metal Gear 2
Metal Gear Rising Revengeance
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Metal Gear Solid

I still really love the story stuff in the original Metal Gear Solid, but egad some of the gameplay decisions in that game are fucking terrible.

Between 1~4, 1 by a country mile:

1 - Epic game with perfect pacing, memorable characters and excellent OST: 9/10

2 - Very good too, but worse OST, characters and some cringey writing: 7/10

3 - Cringey all around, boring green corridors, cringey characters, cringey writing and awful pacing: 4/10

4 - Too much CG, awful writing, good gameplay, good fan service and great ending: 6/10

Overall I'd say MGS 3 is my favorite, despite it's clunkiness. MGS 2 and 5 are damn good as well.

I also want to give Twin Snakes a mention It seems get a lot of shit for being too easy and for its "over the top" cutscenes. but I'd still play it over the original.
