sticky cover
I mean we've had the ability to crouch and either duck, hide, or take cover behind objects in action games for literally decades but suddenly a few years ago some game is like "Hey, why don't we make it so you attach yourself, that way it looks cool" and, voila: sticky cover!
I don't know if Gears of War was the first game to do that, but iirc it was the first time I saw it in action, and I Remember thinking "WTF is this?" because ducking in that game was nonsense, but cover worked. I didn't like being forced to do something like that, but years later I am enjoying it, despite the fact it is bullshit and technically removes freedom from the player. Give me crouch and peeking around corners before sticky cover haha
It's such a bullshit mechanic of games, but it is also really, really fun. Especially when implemented well so you can dodge and dive and hurdle around and over cover and so forth.

@ghosts4ever: It's a shame you don't like the game.
hHonestly I heard a lot of people complain about the stealth in Wolfenstein II, but I never even gave this a sot.
I played all the levels like this:
Sprint all the time, dual wield 2 different weapons, blast everything, alarms go off, blast reinforcements.
Pick up the four barreled shotgun emplaced weapon, fire four barrels simultanously at everyone and everything.
I had soooooooo much fun with the game, honestly the shooting in that game is just amazing.
10/10 for me. GOTY 2017.
I also cant believe this same team once made Riddick EFBB which was masterpiece.
Damn, Wolfenstein II is the best game of 2017 imo, or at least top 10. But yeah, Riddick was a god damn brilliant piece of gaming.
As for stealth mechanics, they were light but fun. I mean Wolfenstein is not a stealth game, so you can't expect that much, but the stealth was present enough to be fun. More importantly, it was grisly and brutal and satisfying. It was more of a tool to thin out the herd of Nazis than it was a complete solution to a level.
