For those of you who have used/owned one, what do you actually think of it? I had one when it came out but it's one of those systems that got lost in time and I don't remember what I did with it, I'm thinking about getting another one and my memories of it were great, especially Wario Land.

It was horrible and the games even more so.

It was a FLOP commercially too:

"According to some reports, the Virtual Boy sold roughly 770,000 units worldwide during its brief life span—and only 140,000 units in its native Japan."

And Nintendo put in a reminder, which was awful too.

Nintendo decided to implement a built-in software timer into its games that would remind users every 15 minutes to pause and rest their eyes. The same reminder found its way into the manual.

Just an all around piece of garbage system and games, critics and users agreed with their wallets.

Pretty good system. Teleroboxer is a great Punchout. Mario Tennis is great. Bowling is great. Wario is great. Most of the games are rather good. Nice crisp visuals, and excellent audio.

Build quality is shit, mine developed scan lines in all my games from literally sitting in storage in a closet for years. It's a common issue.

Didn't cause me to have a headache or anything....but I didn't like it.

At first it was like "Oh ok....this is neat." But that wore off real quick.

I liked it honestly. It did what it set out to do which was give you a feel of real 3D gaming. Unfortunately after playing it for hours on end, you'd take it off and there would be blue everywhere until your eyes readjusted.

It still has my most favorite Wario Land title on it. Red Alert was good too. Mario Tennis as well.

I still have 2 of them. Just have to sift through my boxes and pull them out.

its surprising that nintendo tries something that's way ahead of their time.

As others have said it is very bad for your eyes.

Even today's VR headsets make me wonder if it could have a negative impact on your vision with it being so close to your eyeballs.

>trying to find a comfortable position to play the thing with was just impossible for me.

>thing was advertised as a handheld, they way it was designed made it more of a console, and it absolutely failed to work as either.

>The Library of the Virtual Boy could literally fit in one hand

>Only game actually worth a damn was Wario Land. I remember AVGN actually kinda liking some robot boxing game for actually having a 3d experience. never actually played the game. Everything else was meh, mediocre or just bad.

Yeah, the Virtual Boy sucked. And my family actually did get one for me and my brothers. I'm sure it's still hiding somehwere in some dark corner of the house.

One of the worst video game systems ever made, right down there with the Game.com and CD-i. It was barely even VR, but was just a glorified version of the red-blue 3-D glasses used by the NES. Even if it did have a few decent games, the hardware was atrocious, to the point where it can make decent games unplayable (by making your eyes bleed). Sega got a lot of flak for the 32X, and so did Atari for the Jaguar, but those were nowhere near as bad as the piece of crap that was the Virtual Boy. Nintendo should be ashamed of themselves.

Like almost every other piece of Nintendo's innovative tech history, it was a couple decades too early for the industry. An idea that far exceeded the technological limitations of the time.

  1. It's a POS
  2. It was a terrible idea
  3. It's tacky
  4. It's awkward & uncomfortable
  5. shitty graphics to make me go blind, literally/physically

All of the above, from my memory, I've experienced in just a mere 10 minutes, at a Toys R Us kiosk display, back 20 years ago.

Epically failing isn't the same thing as being ahead of it's time.

It isn't even as if Nintendo INVENTED the concept of VR or really pioneered anything in that regard. VR was very much already in pop culture of the 1980s and 1990's. They were actually LATE to the game, there were already VR firms that existed and then gave up realizing the technology wasn't viable. Nintendo was simply "aware" of these aspirations - tried to make a gimmicky product that embraced these popular dreams - and epic-ally failed at it.

I have heard of the Virtual Boy back in the 1990s but never tried it. I did not know it was a failure until about ten years ago, as in the mid 1990s, I was focusing my attention away from console games to PC games.

It wasnt even VR, at least what I played on the VB was more like a 3D platformer and Pinball.

@onesiphorus: There is usually one in the Retro Gaming section at EGX Rezzed if you ever get a chance to go.

It's more of a conversation piece than a good gaming platform. It's honestly a piece of shit.

Wouldn't surprise me if even Virtual Boy could handle more titles in 1080p than an Xbox One.

i didn't even know this was a thing. It looks cool. A VR headset in the 90s? They probably did it too soon.

I wonder if nintendo would do something like this again. I don't like Nintendo, but I'd buy something like this if they did it.

It was just a system way before it's time. It should never have been released, it should have stayed as an R&D prototype.

I ended up buying one, comes with Mario Tennis, everything complete in box and I bought Wario Land.

Got a bunch of Ebay cards for Christmas, so that worked out perfectly.
