Say the 360 never came out, and right now it was only the PS3 and Wii.  Now Microsoft releases the Xbox 360 using a slightly better processor 768 unified ram and a R600.  This would all be completely possible, so the question I ask you is..... Would the 360 just absolutely trample the PS3?  Oh Yeah, flagship launch game would be Crysis.

It would be better....but it would cost more than the PS3, securing MS's fate as third place.

I always say, headstarts don't count for anything.  If the PS3 was still much more expensive then even if the 360 we know NOW was released Sept 2007, people would still buy more of it.

Well I suppose the most obvious thing would be the even bigger power supply and an even worse problem with cooling from the heat of the graphics card.

The r600 alone would cost around $500. That would probably be near a 1k$ gaming machine...might as well just get a computer.

Putting an R600 in the machine defeats the entire purpose of consoles. People buy consoles because they're cheaper alternatives to high end computers.

thtas true...Also pc's  have much better cooling due to the fact that pc's have better airflow because they have more space between parts.

If any of the next-gen consoles waited this long to release, it would have been too late. Anyone serious enough about games to be an early adopter of a 360 of a PS3 would have noticed how much better PC games were than Xbox/PS2 games and made the switch. Not to mention that if the 360 used that kind of setup it would cost $1000. Why not just buy a PC which is more versatile.

Headstarts count for plenty. The PS2 had an insurmountable lead over the Xbox by the time it came out.
