Not to sound old but when i was younger there were games that created a stir or just did something that people got excited about. GTA for example was a new phenomenon. I remember talking with people how to find the secrets that game had and the amount of over the top stuff. Tetris, Mario. I think the NES as a console in general broke that mold. World of Warcraft as an mmo was this. Do people actually talk about games like assassins creed or Infamous or even titanfall any of these games at the water cooler at work? I kind of doubt it. If they do it's probably very different than i remember. What games actually do something new that hasnt been done before? I miss games like that that really genuinally have me excited. Even games like the elder scrolls and doom created discussion amongst more hardcore gamers. you can only talk about the same games so much though. have people just gotten lame? what's going on? lol. Even bioware games don't create this kind of excitement anymore. Most games these days are just better graphics and have a been there done that factor to them.

I tend to think most developers these days are molding like clay instead of innovating.

Shogun 2 broke the mold with Fall Of The Samurai. But this is a pc game for intellectuals looking for something deeper than simply pressing a control pad button to make the Call Of Duty non American people die. Credit will not be given.

it's becoming a rarity. i think the last of us was a nice change of pace and i really enjoyed the multiplayer too. most of the games now though are "generic shooter modern warfare 17". They really need to stop piling on top of existing series and make NEW games with NEW concepts.

not necessarily a new concept, but the intense story-driven narrative of the game was definitely something we don't see too often coupled with one of the best endings ever. but if you'd like to inform me with what games are like the last of us go ahead.

I'm not sure I follow.... game mechanic wise it didn't do a single thing refreshing. I didnt think this was about story, which was good. but everything else was a generic zombie shooter with high production values... much like unchrted is ahigh production value indiana jones piece with inferior gameplay to say tomb raider (new)

@MBirdy88: i'm saying story-wise it breaks the mold. i like the crafting aspect of it too. but story-wise it just hits the nail on the head. and i didn't really care much for the new tomb raider. it feels a lot like uncharted and i don't really care much for uncharted either. a better example i could give you of a new concept would be like mirror's edge.

Star Citizen (it was only a matter of time before it got mentioned) is likely the biggest game on the horizon to break away from the 'norm'.

Space fighter sim, with ships ranging from single seat fighter to multi-crew capital ships, in a massively multi-player persistent universe with fps ship boarding and capturing. To be honest that short sentence doesn't even come close to what this game has the potential to be.

Everquest Next seems to be taking a pretty risky step in the MMO world. The voxel based game world, focus on user creation and customization, and a truly changing world through large scale events whose outcome is determined by players success or failures that completley change entire sections of the game world.

Looks pretty promising. The whole system is built to generate unlimited content. Lots of ways it can all fail but it's definitely pushing the boundaries.

I would say there is definitely a lot of games which are leading the way towards new gameplay and story directions.

  • Minecraft is a big recent one (quite old now but still in the 360 generation);
  • DayZ from the user generated storys and survival elements (Still waiting for non-early access full release before I jump in but super excited);
  • Left 4 Dead really pushed Co-Op to another level and that model is followed by a lot of games now (Payday 2, Evolve)
  • MOBA Games (Dota 2, LoL) even though Dota has been around for ages it still falls into the modern era and thats an entirely new genre.
  • Mirrors Edge (So pumped for the sequel and its a shame it wasn't as well received at the time it came out)
  • Dwarf Fortress (Haven't played it and don't plan to but the a couple mates love it and I do enjoy hearing the crazy stories from that game)

And I', sure there are a ton more I'm leaving out.

Probably minecraft even though I can't stand it. Black and White when it came out. Maybe Dark Souls 1/2 with the whole player invasion aspect of the game (not familiar with it myself). Patapon for the PSP was pretty damn interesting and so was LocoRoco
