Some games age like fine wine when it comes to gameplay others don't what games do you think have aged the best on gameplay alone?

Here's my list I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting

  • Mirror's Edge
  • Resident Evil 4
  • Max Payne 2
  • F.E.A.R.
  • Half Life 2
  • GTA IV
  • SSX tricky and SSX 3
  • WWE here comes the pain and SVR06
  • Battlefield 2
  • Crysis

GTA4 wasn't even good the day it came out. It was a bad clunk turd person cover shooter then it's a bad clunky turd person cover shooter. No amount of "but look at the cute details" changes the part where most of the missions are "go here, shoot dudes" and the shooting dudes part is the wackest part about the game.

Max Payne 3 in general is the only Rockstar game that could be argued as having good gameplay.

Pretty much every acclaimed PC game from the 90's and early-mid 2000's is still pretty good.

I can think of a good number that still hold up, but first one that comes to mind since I've been playing it recently is the third person shooter Armed and Dangerous from 2003.

Just an insane game considering its over 16 years old and is still so fun.

All I had to do was a quick hex edit of the exe and now playing it in ultrawide with super sampling cranked up and it looks so smooth.

The size and creativity of the levels in the mid to late levels is impressive... your allies AI is really dumb and they are mostly useless half the time but the enemy AI is fairly aggressive but fair... its a game where you move around a lot and can survive this way.

Total War series.

There have been subtle changes, additions, and subtractions to the series, but the core gameplay is the same as it has ever been: turn-based strategic map with real-time battles between massive armies.

And it's as good as it has ever been.

  • Crysis

Ignore the haters. This is a good list. I still break out Mirror's Edge now and then.

Anyway, on my list:

  • Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Trilogy
  • Metroid Prime and Super Metriod
  • Motorstorm: Pacific Rift
  • F-Zero GX
  • Power Stone
  • Soul Calibur
  • The Last Blade

Really, most good games from gen 4 and then gen 6 and onward have aged pretty well in my opinion.

I don't think games really "age", they are either good or bad. Some aspects like FMV's and graphics etc.. can look like shit, but the core game is either good or bad.

Just in terms of games I can easily go back to and play at least once year, it's mostly id titles like Doom I/II, Quake I/II, RTCW (which has shit stealth levels but it otherwise awesome).

With modding still going on decades later, the content for these games is really, really, very much. Biggish.

Man, could easily rattle off a hundred. Well designed gameplay isn't something that ages, and there are plenty of expertly designed games going back to the 80s at least.

I'll just go with the first that come to mind.

- Most of the SMB series. SMB1 is solid and from SMB3 going forward it's mostly great stuff.

- Super Metroid, Metroid Prime, just masterful games.

- 2d Zelda with A Link to the Past being too good for this world.

- Street Fighters 2, Alpha, 3, and 4 (series)

- MGS2

- Chaos Theory

- DMC 3 and 4

- Bayonetta

- NGB and NG2.

- Doom

Actually yea, donno how I missed that. SF2 especially pops up in some form every couple of years. I'm sure Super-hyper-Nintendo-Switch version isn't the last incarnation.

@uninspiredcup:

At this point I'm just glad the anniversary collection exists. Should've happened ages ago.

But yeah, I'm sure Capcom will find a way to bring us a "new" SF2 again. I'm not opposed to the original art at all, but wouldn't mind if they did a proper visual overhaul rather than the cheapo jerky sprite animation in HD Remix.

I'd say that in general older games generally have superior gameplay compared to newer games.

Ninja Gaiden Black

God Hand

Gunstar Heroes

Guardian heroes

Doom

Duke Nukem 3D

Deus Ex

F.E.A.R.

Classic Mario, Contra, and Megaman games

Fire Emblem Seisen no keifu remains the pinnacle of its series

Shining Force games also have addictive jrpg gameplay

Nethack is still being updated but has been around since 1987

Thief 1 and 2 are still the pinnacle of stealth games

Splinter Cell Chaos theory is great too

I mean I could go on and on.

So many wrong answers here... GTA IV aged horribly, in fact it was outdated at launch not to mention it was a complete regression from GTA: San Andreas which had a sigificantly larger map and 200x more things to do. GTA V expanded even further. Its literally impossible to go back to IV after playing V (or even playing SA)

Resident Evil 4 had shitty gameplay that did not allow you to move while aiming your gun. This was fine in 2005 before Gears of War, MGS4, GRAW and many other third-person shooters (was outdated by the time RE5 came out in 2009) Going back to RE4 after playing RE2 remake is very hard because its dated.

Someone mentioned MGS2. One of my all time favourite games that nearly makes me wheep thinkign about it. Those memories.... Which I will keep as memories. After playing MGS4 and MGSV: The Phantom Pain going back to Sons of Libery or Snake Eater is taking three steps back. The stories were amazing and the gameplay was phenomenal at the time, but they didn't age well.

I cannot wait, and sincerely hope that Konami, now without Kojima decides to remake MGS 1,2 & 3 next gen on the Fox Engine in 4K/60fps/Ray Tracing in 2021-2025 with the same controls of MGS4. That would be 10/10 games.

Someone wrote The Witcher... It aged horribly too. I played it for 15-20 hours, after playing The Witcher for 115 hours (and counting) there is NO going back

SSX Tricky & SSX3 are fantastic choices.

I would add Tekken 5 and Call of Duty 4.
