Most games today have some kind of story, even if they're boring, hard to follow, or maybe even not necessary. In those cases, we tend to move on because we'd rather just focus on the game. But there are games that certainly do have a good story or interesting lore, and you want to learn more. What games are those for you, SW? As crazy as it is, I tend to like the convoluted stories in games like MGS, Bayonetta, or even JRPGs. Maybe it's cause it's so far out and unusual lol. I try to read up on them as for the life of me it just doesn't stick 😝

I enjoy story/plot/lore in most every game I play. From the most basic and simple like Super Mario games to the most deep and intricate like Dark Souls. I even enjoy the ones in fighting games. The Blazblue games have some pretty crazy story content to them. My favourites are typically in the JRPG genre with games such as:

- Chrono Trigger/Cross

- Final Fantasy

- Dragon Quest

- Xenoblade Chronicles

I just started Control and already find it very compelling. Reading documents is one of the best parts of the game.

Planescape Torment is one of the few video games I have played with a story and setting good enough to be a book.

Fighting game stories are largely crap, but I find the setting and lore of Mortal Kombat compelling. Seems to pull influence from a wide range of mythologies and comes together as something unique.

I care about what happens in Mass Effect...

I cared about what was happening in kotor 1 and 2.

I care loosely about what happens in zelda.

I used to think assassin's creed was leading us somewhere great until they said eff it and justade games because milking.

I also care about what will happen in God of War.

I feel like consistently good story telling should be a thing in most games at this point, but it's really not. Still, there are some gems out there.

Love me some Starwars.

Stuff like Witches Of Dathomir popping up from Clone Wars in Fallen Order makes me happy meaning a story-arc where they got wiped out makes me happy.

I like the idea of cross-media when it's well implemented Starwars has been doing that since before even the Prequels were made.

Video games specifically being a big part of that.

A last really good one was Bloodborne. For a game that doesnt tell you much it surprisingly have an amazing coherent story that is easy to piece together unlike Souls. Really enjoyed my time discovering what actually happened.

Control, FF7R was great too. Judgement had a great start but the middle portion was such a slog.

For a JRPG fan I'm a bit jaded on the stories in JRPG. In the end ur gonna kill a demigod anyways its the same old same old.

The original Mass Effect and Bioshock 2 to name a few.

Mega hot take, but the last title that i really enjoyed the story is TLOU2. I know, you're disgusted right now. Its a story for adults, not fanboys that can't handle seeing characters die.

  • Oddly enough, Assassin's Creed. Though to be honest I really want to see the franchise come to some sort of modern-era conclusion. It always sort of seemed like things were tied together for the first few games, but now it has lost it's meaning. I enjoyed h ow the older games always had that string tying what you experienced in the bulk of the game to the modern world, but that seems lost now. I'd really like to see maybe one or two more time periods--maybe a Chinese one, and then a Roman one--then do a final game that takes place in the modern or near-future era.
  • Dragon Age and Mass Effect were pretty meaningful. Bioware was always good at creating characters you care about.
  • Star Wars games for the most part are pretty great; Tie Fighter was a narrative-driven space sim that really started it imo, and Dark Forces introduced characters like Kyle Katarn. Bioware's SWTOR, despite being an MMO, had a really good story for each character that was a lot of fun to play through. Likewise, KOTOR 1 and 2 had pretty great stories except offline (obviously). More recently Fallen Order has proven that when given a good developer and writer, the Star Wars games can offer a great story-driven game experience.

Metal Gear Solid (except part 5)

Yakuza 0 - 7 (I'm a bit worried about the future of the franchise as all the key people who worked on the best games has left. You can definitely see the writing has gotten a lot worse in Lost Judgement compared to previous games)

I am deeply into MGS and Zelda lore, like a lot. Also like Assassin's Creed's lore but not nearly as much as the other two.

@SolidGame_basic:

Games I cared about the plot:

  • Elder Scrolls games.
  • Halo
  • Mass Effect (even Andromeda, sorry)
  • Zelda games
  • Dragon Age
  • StarCraft
  • WarCraft
  • Max Payne

Most of the time, it's about the game play - that's far more important to me than visuals or story to me. Pretty graphics are great; but they cease to wow me after a short time. And, often times the story is just there to move the game along. Example 1: Outriders - it's not that pretty, and the plot is dumb, but it's very fun to play and it sucked me in for several dozen hours. Example 2: Anthem - Once it was on Game Pass, I downloaded it and played the crap out of it. Again, did not care about the story, but flying around like Iron Man was quite entertaining; as was building out various javelins.

There's a lot. I find myself gravitating to post-apocalyptic stories a lot -- in all forms of media (games, books, TV/film). So the Fallout and TLOU series are big ones for me.

But I also really like sci-fi -- so I'm really into Arkane's stuff and Deus Ex are great, amongst others.

And lastly, I dig a good period piece. And the one that comes first, that made such a huge impressions, is the Red Dead series. Can't wait for the next one!

- Red Dead Redemption

- Kingdom Hearts

- Persona

- Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch

- Final Fantasy

- Metal Gear (Haven't played MGS 5 yet. It's sitting in my cart with all DLC for $4.99. Is it worth it?)

- Chrono Trigger/ Cross

- Parasite Eve

- Mass Effect

- The Legend of Dragoon (Really interesting world with really interesting lore. I can't believe they haven't made a second game yet smh)

- The Legend of Heroes (Quite possibly the greatest JRPG series I've ever played. The world building is just phenomenal. The parts all come together to create an experience that is truly epic imo.)

Recently?

Kentucky Route Zero and Return of the Obra Dinn.

Triple A shit? Last of Us 2 was pretty good, a bit half cooked on some ideas, but otherwise it tells a more ambitious story than the first game, a better one at that. Yah wouldn't grasp that tho, given the stage 5 stupid yalls deal with.

Lots of them. From AAAs like The Witcher, Mass Effect trilogy, Horizon Zero Dawn, Forbidden West, Red Dead Redemption, The Last of Us, etc, to indies like What Remains of Edith Finch, Life is Strange, Oxenfree, etc.

Kinda rag on this a lot but do enjoy its story.

Guy who watched too much Rambo and Xfiles making his own fan-fiction, that alone is more interesting than the average Ubisoft AAA slop.

Go into a Metal Gear game with really no idea what you're going to get half the time.
