I would say one franchise whose story resonates with me is Nier Replicant and Nier Automata. I love that they're about our world after humans have effed up and tried to save themselves 😄 But there is a theme to it that's a combination of science fiction, despair and our humanity. It's cool and gets me thinking. And I like games like that!

How about you? What games have a story that really resonated with you?

I agree with Automata. I haven’t played Replicant. How does it compare?

@goldenelementxl: if you love Automata, there's a lot to like in Replicant. Memorable characters, the story and plot are connected to Automata, amazing OST. Bigger and better boss fights imo. Only thing I didn't like was the repetition. Many of the side missions are fetch quests and there's a lot of them. You also have to replay the game multiple times, and get all weapons to unlock all endings. I have a few more endings to unlock and it's super repetitive. Automata did it much better. Also, combat is decent, but not Nier Automata level imo.

Persona 4 Golden. I found my truest truth, and helped all my friends find theirs as well.

But seriously, I was not expecting the story to make me reflect on myself, people, and life. Shit is deep.

I believe that anyone who has been on SW for a long time resonates with the TLOU2 story very well.🤭

Hmmm nothing really comes to mind. Video games tend to suffer from either poor writing, poor story-telling, or both....in one way or another you're getting a bad deal.

There was a moment in Cyberpunk where Judy takes you SCUBA diving that was a pretty touching story. It was the only time in the entire game where for a brief moment you felt completely disconnected from the "cyberpunk" portion of the game and it felt really, really, really nice. It made me realize that while I like the game, and I like the genre and setting of cyberpunk, I really dislike the overall aesthetic and "culture" of cyberpunk. These are the people I hate most in life, these flashy people, these superficial folks. It's why Judy is probably such a compelling character for me and why that moment under the water was such a nice moment in the game.

On a similar subject, and since it reminds me, original Deus Ex had a great story. Writing was superb and, while voice acting was lacking, I thought dialogue was done well.

@mrbojangles25: Judy rules.

I'm struggling to think of many older games where the stories moved me.

But in recent years -

The Last Guardian. I'm a pet/animal nut and I was really moved by the time with Trico

The Last of Us. All teh emotions

Hellblade VR. The story was good - not great - but playing through it in VR made the experience so much more personal. Really felt like I was there with Senua and the shit she went through

I can only think of only a small selection of games that were heavy handed in the narrative department, story, voice acting ect. that actually delivered. Everything else seemed cheesy to me.

Prince of Persia Sands of Time

Hades

Call of Jaurez Gunslinger

TLOU 1 (which really was just a plagiarised version of the "The Road")

Literally every other game I've played that tried to deliver a comprehensive narrative failed and came off as cringe.

I usually prefer games with understated stories or none at all. If I want to watch a movie, I'll watch a movie, not a b-rated game narrative.

The best story driven game I've ever played is Shenmue.

I loved Persona 3. Back in 2007 the game pretty much resonates with a phase of mine and the game continues to hold a special place for me.

Recently hmmm, idk probably none. Maybe The Last of Us back in 2013.

You're right, Drakengard is the real best story. But Replicant > Automata, respectfully.

Detroit had a pretty good story.... or I guess it's mainly the theme and world building that resonated with me more than the narrative. But it was enough to keep me engaged.

Maneater, I love the narrator's cynical assessment of humanity, makes it so much fun to just wanna turn the ocean red with the blood of morons, go on a GTA style 5 star murderous rampage of indiscriminate cruelty.

Unfortunately, there is no game that I played whose story resonates with me. Most of the stories I remembered involved characters that I cannot relate to.

It's simple, but Windwaker's story about breaking out of your comfort zone to truly grow is something I constantly have to push myself to do.

Sometimes it's hard to leave the comfort of your little island. Maybe we should stop fighting for the Hyrule we once knew and journey into the unknown future to build something new.

Spec Ops: The line. The only game in recent memory that the story had my full attention. The white phosphorous scene was a gut punch.

Red Dead series after that I guess.
