There are many dissapointing game or good games or excellent games released so far this gen. how ever what games that surprise you this generation most?

to me Its Titanfall 2. before its release i thought its going to be complete crap. but it end up really good if not great. i mean a single player campaign. it may be not Doom or Metro but a good and fun SP game. and better than COD or new order or other overrated shooters we have seen despite being short. i didnot expect this game to be even decent.

Resident evil 7 also kinda surprise me that its only resident evil game that i actually enjoy. as i didnot like any previous game in series.

so what games surprise you? discuss

Probably Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc. I didn't expect it to be as good as it is and to affect me so much emotionally either. Also didn't expect to get completely hooked on it till the end.

Final Fantasy XV. I went into the game with very low expectations, after a certain trilogy, and while it absolutely had it's flaws due to the issues surrounding it's development, I still came out of it feeling it's one of my top 3 Final Fantasy games, and top 5 games of the generation.

Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and most of all, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild really surprise me on how those games are amazing, with great gameplay and great single player experience.

Also Nintendo Switch really surprise me the most this gen. At first, I wasn't sure I be bother with another Nintendo console but Nintendo surprise me in every step of the way more so then what both Sony/MS did for there consoles.

The Witcher 3. It even managed to best Zelda. It so thoroughly made it look like a kids game in comparison. CD project red dominated Nintendo. Amazing.

The correct answer is PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds. The game is in early access, has almost sold 5 millions copies and is consistently in the top 5 viewed games on Twitch. The game is super fun and addictive as well. If the game keeps its 2017 launch date, it will win the majority of GOTY awards.

I don't.

I found Twilight Princess not even close to Wind Waker good, Skyward Sword my least favourite Zelda and Super Mario 3D World to be the worst 3D Mario.

I get what you're saying. I had a lot of fun playing FFXV and I still play it to this day because of DLC's like Gladio, Prompto, and the Regalia Type-D but I can't help feeling a little underwhelmed. I went and bought a PS4 just to play FFXV because I'm such a Final Fantasy fan and it was killing me that I didn't have it on 11/29 but I just don't consider it a top tier Final Fantasy game. I liked a lot of different parts and I feel like Leviathan was most epic FF boss fight ever but the story is what kind of killed it for me. I'm hoping to do a NG+ once all DLC's are released but for now I don't consider it a best FF game. I know it's all subjective because every game is different but to me they always had good stories. That's where I felt FFXV was lacking not due to the story itself but their presentation of it. Graphics were dope af, tho

Honestly, it wasn't so much the story itself for me, as it was the characters. The friendships between Noct, Galdio, Prompto and Ignis was what captured me more than anything else, I honestly don't think any other game has had such genuine feeling friendships between the characters, even in the aftermath of the Leviathan fight when they where at there most broken, and there was a lot of anger between them. Also that final campfire scene...

I agree with TC, both Titanfall 2 and RE7 far exceeded my expectations.

I'd also agree with others on Breath of the Wild.

I'd add myself: Alien Isolation, it's a somewhat cursed franchise with games and this stands above the rest, and with a dev that mainly does RTS games to boot; Mad Max, I was surprised both the movie and game turned out good, I expected both to be disappointing, and the real irony was that it was Just Cause 3 that severely disappointed; Shadow of Mordor, I mainly had doubts stand since it seemed Monolith was on the ropes ready to go under, but they pulled it off, finally; Doom, the E3 trailer seemed too good to be true, I was surprised the actual game lived up to what they sold it as.

ARMS. Not that I was expecting it to be bad, more I didn't think anyone made games like this anymore. Plus it's a new IP from Nintendo, witch in and of itself is always kind of a shock.

Was going to say Shadow Tactics, but that already had overwhelming on Steam.

I guess I'll go with Butcher, was price of a burger. It's like Doom and Broforce had a love child, just plain simple fun with no pretensions of being anything else. You shoot things, they dieded.

Breath of the Wild

Since I had not loved any Zelda game since the N64 and Skyward Sword was absolute trash, my expectations were initially low for Breath of the Wild. I'm glad that I was wrong on this one.

Battlefield 1

I was done with the Battlefield series after how disappointing Battlefield 3&4 were.

Even most disheartening of all was the fact that DICE was already selling Premium for BF4 when THEY COULDN'T EVEN GET THE BASE GAME WORKING. That's spitting in your customers face and asking money for it in return.

When a friend of mine told me rumors were that Battlefield was going for a WW1 setting I didn't believe him. Because people want their 'red dots' and their 'customizations'

But DICE managed to pull it off: an amazingly interesting setting, great weaponry and getting rid of so many things that made BF3&4 so stupid and dull. While still keeping that addicting Battlefield gameplay.

Not only that but the people (and I've seen many on these boards) calling it a skin for Battlefield 4 are just wrong:

The behemoths, frontline gamemode, operations gamemode, the weather effects, the way weapons feel real and not sci-fi... All of that adds to an amazing experience. One that with the right conditions... can truly feel like a WW1 battle at times.

Battlefield 1 surprised me the most this generation; Because I was expecting nothing after BF4 and I got something truly amazing.

Because map packs in Titanfall 1 weren't microtransactions.

no. COD campaign has not been better since original one. and titanfall 2 is almost as good as COD1 in term of SP campaign.

original titanfall was rip off.

Overwatch. I tried the beta on a whim. Actually hated it the first time and deleted it. Then downloaded the beta again and actually learned how to play it and loved it. It has become one of my all time favorite games.

Nioh.

That is genuinely the only surprise so far. I thought it would've been some half-assed Dark Souls clone. Zero hype.

All the other great games have merely met the hype, but haven't really been able to greatly surpass it. At least, not in my humble opinion.

Definitely BOTW. I didnt think it was going to be all that good as I dont think much to the Zelda games I have played since OAT but BOTW has ended up being one of my favorite games ever. Its hard for me to enjoy games like I used to but somehow BOTW managed it.

Come on ... You had a game that supposed would be out 2 years ago and got forced back to meet Switch release date, having 2 extra years to get polished. I predicted long time ago that Zelda would be one of the best in the series mainly because of those 2 extra years of extra polishing of an already finished game from an already talented developer. No surprises there at all.

@AzatiS: It was never a concern of polish for me. It's design. Zelda games are almost always polished, it's the design that is to be concerned about.

For all intents and purposes, Skyward Sword was very well polished. It was just a boringly designed game (at least for me).

Saying that, A Link Between Worlds was a great game too, so it's not like the series wasn't on the up.

To me was Resident Evil 7.

Not only moved away of that epic fail action formula RE4 introduced and went back to survival but also made it to be a great game. Specially the first half of the game was epicly good for a RE title, i could never imagine they would go that way with RE7, not 1 in a million. First person survival/horror in a house vs a psycho family ? I would probably laugh out loud if someone would tell me this after RE4 to RE6.

EDIT : How i did forget about PLAYERS UKNOWN BATTLEGROUND ?!! This game is a beast. To be fair to other similar games though i had zero experience before it in this specific genre, maybe thats why im surprised with it in a very good way.

EDIT 2 : I still though having Neir Automata as my personal GOTY. That game was nuts and surprised me big time though RE7 wins it for me because i couldnt even dream of RE7 go back to its roots in first person and be that good

What kind of logic this ?

You got an already AAA game coming from an already talented developer that is pushed back 2 years. You think those 2 years they just put the title on hold till Switch arrived or they did put some work with it to make it even better? What do you think was the case?

The time they had to polish BOTW is astonishing, a game that was coming from an already talented developer had 2 more years to polish things even more ? Haha. My prediction bro on point. When noone knew shit i told you that game might be one of the best zelda ever made and the main reason was those 2 extra years in development.

Common logic bro

Biggest surprise for me has been Metal Gear Solid 5.

So many reasons for this also... main one is because i've briefly played the other ones and really disliked them. This game fixed every complaint I had with them, while this may have turned off previous fans to the series though, but for me it drew me into the game. Its like nightime and all of a suddent its daytime in real life, its the type of game you lose track of time its that good.

They've also setup a really funny game here, its got a sense of humor and plays with so much polish you see it everywhere. And the almost countless ways you can finish missions is impressive, you can play it easy or make it hard and challenging for yourself, and not forced to be stealthy or aggressive, just whatever you want. And the game is almost full open world, similar to the witcher 3 with how different countries are seperated maps but the maps to each of them is pretty big.

I could list probably a hundred things they've added in this game which drew me in but i'll just leave it to that. And the PC optimization in this game is dark magic, i haven't a clue how they got a game looking this good and i can run it 3440x1440 on just a 970gtx and still be only at 60-90% gpu usage with 60 fps, its sick optimization and i wish every game did this. Weird shit part was i had to hex edit the .exe file to be able to use my ultrawide resolution but after doing that it worked pretty good other than the enemy markers being a bit off when not completely centered.

Only shit part about this game is the first 1 hr you are crawling around in maybe the most boring opening sequences in gaming. Also Quiet is massively overpowered, you can basically just have her set to cover you and she'll take down every person in an area, but its entirely optional to use her usually. Maybe another thing i would have wanted was an option in the settings to allow permanent capture of guard posts instead of them just falling back into enemy hands when you leave the map, similar to Farcry 3 how you could capture areas and keep them. Last complaint is i wish you could use multiple buddies like having your dog and horse at the same time.

@AzatiS: Again, it's not about how much time it was in development for; if the game wasn't fun, it wasn't fun.

Skyward Sword was in development for 5 years and it still turned out to be a pretty boring game. It was extremely polished. Every idea was executed as best as it could be, just those ideas weren't very good nor did they lead to a fun game.

My concern didn't lie in the technical prowess of Aounuma's team, it lay in whether they could actually make a fun open world game. I had strong hopes based on Aounuma's reaction to Skyward Sword and what he wanted to do with the series moving forward but it was unproven territory whether they could actually design a fun open world game. Personally, open world games are usually hit or miss for me so, yeah I could certainly see why people were surprised about how it turned out.

I'm not saying 2 years added to development isn't fundamental but sometimes it doesn't matter how much time you spend polishing your ideas, if that idea isn't fun to begin with; then it will all be for naught.

I wasn't convinced and it had nothing to do with how long they were developing the game for. Thats why youre not a predictor and i am.

We knew beforehand that Zelda would be an AAA franchise that with one way or another gonna deliver . We knew already that Zelda would be the first open world Zelda means that finally would offer new things. All those new things needed new approach on design either gameplay or level design speaking ( and you supposed you understand design in the first place ).

With that being said we had an AAA caliber game ready in 2015 and for a reason it pushed back to 2017. They got extra time to work on a finished AAA product that was coming from an already talented developer, what you think the outcome of that would be ? I predicted that would be one of the best zeldas ever, score wise or you name it wise and i was dead on. Period

Thats why youre not predictor and i am. So, surpised ? Not even close ! No way, i even predicted that will be one of the best in the series looong ago and i gave the reason why i think so with the main reason being those 2 extra years in development. You like it or not, i was on point... for 123123th time

I'm going with Botw as well. I don't really like the series, but I loved Botw.
