What game(s) do you consider overrated this gen?

The one game that comes to mind is Mario Oddysey. It’s a good game, but I don’t think it’s 10/10 material. The levels are not as great as Mario 64. Platforming is better in Mario 64 too. But that’s just my opinion. What about you, SW? What game(s) do you consider overrated this gen?

The first that came to my mind was Uncharted 4. It's a good game, but nowhere close to what some people make it out to be

The witcher 3 easily.

the game has single worst combat ever, terrible control, long and boring dialouges yet it deem as OMG BEST THING SINCE SLICE BREAD.

The Witcher 3 is at the top for me. Sluggish animations, bad controls, a story with less intrigue than the previous one, characters that go on and on and on about crap nobody cares about...

Fortnite easily and GS treating it like it's the best thing since Sex.

None. I can't think of any. I never really subscribed to the overrated thing. Maybe games that get high marks that no one wants to buy.

It really didn't deserve all it's GOTY awards and it's open world was too amateurish.(Since most of the map was completely useless outside of some of the main missions)

All the games scoring 9 and 10 that don't work on Win10 OS. lol :P

Fortnite, and the reason is that they paid off every possible influencer to play the game, so that's reasonable.

PUBG is way too clingy, but much more serious as a game than fortnite.

Basically any game that is built on hype and promoted through influencers.

Please fix me if i'm wrong, i would like to think about alternatives

Both felt like 7/10 games to me. Not the 9's and 10's they were getting.

Definitely God of War. I thought it was just ok. To be honest, I think it is more that I have changed as a gamer. I enjoy more open worlds with a lot more choices to be made. GOW is just too linear to me to enjoy as much as most people seem to.

Breath of the Wild. I mean, I loved it to bits, but so much of its content, like side quests and shrines felt lackluster. Hopefully they´ll reuse the engine for the next one and use the resources they save to flesh out side content, etc.

Fortnite. New gamers have absolute shit taste in games. They actually topped COD in terms of pure shit.

Fortnite is trash but does anyone actually rate it highly? I get the sense that most people who play it aren't the type to visit gaming sites often.

Fornite by a mile. Any game that makes non-gamers/casuals obsessed gamers is just a fad bound to fade in-time. I can't believe it's still going this strong.

Uncharted 4, Mario Odyssey & Breath of the Wild are solid 8's but not the 10 out of 10's they got.

Breath of the Wild is hard for me to be objective on because it has grown on me but as I was attempting to get into it (in March of 2017), all the praise of "masterpiece" and "game of this generation" was making it hard for me to like it because it was sooooo-over-hyped. Plus I had chosen to play Horizon: Zero Dawn first which to me was a far better game so to hear the "masterpiece" praise and "game of the generation" on zelda just rubbed me the wrong way.

Oh I forgot...Destiny and Destiny 2. Most. Over-rated games. Of this generation. They had great gun-play but they forgot to make a fun-game with that great-game-play engine.

@jasonredemption: I'm still playing D2 as are a lot of people, still finding a lot of fun with it.

Just genuinely wondering; what about Fortnite makes it such a steaming pile of shit?
I've been playing videogames for over 25 years and actually find it a lot of fun.

Uncharted 4 and the Witcher 3 easily.

I wish there were two big 3D Zelda games per generation instead of one. Reuse assets like they did with Majora's Mask to release a second game just a few short years later. I still don't think there has even really been a Zelda game on the current Nintendo generation, since Breath is also a Wii U game. One game per generation is way too little.

DOOM. Boring and unsatisfying to play.

@nibbin1191: Yeah, Nier is omly a 7 out of 10 game to me. It does have its moments though.

I always laugh when people claim that SM64 is the pinnacle of 3D platforming. It was the first, GREAT 3D platformer to hit the market and laid the foundation for many others to come, but as of modern times, its dated as hell, and the levels don't come close to things like SMG2.

Had you said SMO wasn't as good as SMG or SMG2, I might have just ignored this thread, but you sure got a good chuckle out of me. Just because SM64 had an action-adventure-lite hub world, people seem to be so nostalgic for it.

Hey, me too, I've got gobs of nostalgia for that game, it was my first true 3D game, but it's not the best 3D platformer, nor the best 3D Mario platformer.

Completely agree with everything you said. And the controls and level design for SM64 are just BAD. They were good for what they were aiming at the time, but SMG refined this to the extreme.

I've never seen anything get that many blind 10/10 scores. The game is clearly a 7 or 8 at best.

Just about any game that's received significant praise this gen that I've played is probably overrated in my book.

Sunset Overdrive and Doom are probably my 2 exceptions.

Of what I own: God of War, Halo 5, BotW, Ratchet & Clank, and Mario Odyssey.

The first two I think are good, not great, and I don't like the latter three at all. I guess there's Uncharted 4 too, but I never bothered to remove the plastic from its box even though it came with my PS4.

Rereading what I wrote, it's funny, because even though it seems like I'm being edgy, I've actually really loved this gen overall, lol.

Really? Because one of the best levels in SMG2 is recycled from Mario 64. If anything, that is sad.

God of War - this is one of my favorite games this year, but its been a weak year, and I felt like a lot of the puzzles felt a bit like filler and all the RPG elements just got in the way and bogged things down.

HZD and MGS V - both Far Cry 3 clones that failed to hold my interest for very long but somehow got very high review scores

DOOM - very fun initially but encounter designs lacked variety, started to lose interest like half way through

@NathanDrakeSwag: In my opinion Horizon is miles better than Metal Gear.Horizon is a nine while Metal Gear is a 5.

My main problem with them is they both felt empty for open world games. Horizon did feel like a more complete game. MGSV did have GOAT stealth gameplay but everything else was lacking.

Definitely The Witcher 3.

I was very hyped for that game, but it was a huge disappointment in the gameplay department. Yes, it has great graphics. Yes, it has great presentation. Yes, it apparently has a great story for people that care about that in a video game. But the most important part of a game, in my opinion, is the gameplay and the gameplay in The Witcher 3 is poor. Especially the combat which is absolutely awful.

Other games that I consider to be very overrated this generation are Resident Evil 7 and all of Sony's movie-games.

There are too many to list. In the modern era of gaming with social media, everything gets way over-hyped and overrated. Any bullshit game that isn't garbage is praised as the best thing ever. Many people have forgotten what truly great games are or have never been exposed to them. Also, the social media hype bandwagon effect can lead to a lot of inflated scores. Reviewers get caught up in the bullshit and tend to overrate games as to not miss out on the bandwagon. It's all kinda sad. :(

Doom the level design just felt a bit cramped. Good graphically but felt it was let down by poor level design.

Lol, that's pretty much what these threads are... that's why I hate them.

HDZ (Glad I got it on sale). I'm struggling to finish this game. The game does nothing that the countless open world games have done before it. The combat is decent but gets old quick. This game is definitive proof that graphics alone should not be an indicator of a game's quality. I rest my case.
